Well, the post-WC failure era is fully upon us as new manager Gregg Berhalter has his first two matches with a near full complement of players starting tonight against Ecuador and next Tuesday against Chile.

The January Camp (essentially a B-Team showcase) concluded with two wins against Panama (3-0) and Costa Rica (2-0) and showed the USMNT for the first time in awhile playing with a cohesive plan...it will be interesting to see if that continues with the step-up in competition. One interesting personnel move to keep an eye-on will be Tyler Adams at the hybrid right back/defensive midfielder position. Nick Lima played this role in the January Camp and had a very positive effect on both games. Adams, who recently transferred to Red Bull Leipzig in the German Bundesliga, has been in good form for club and could excel in this new position.

Roster (Caps/Goals)

GOALKEEPERS (3): 12-Jesse Gonzalez (FC Dallas; 0/0), 22-Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge/BEL; 3/0), 1-Sean Johnson (New York City FC; 6/0)

DEFENDERS (8): 5-John Brooks (Wolfsburg/GER; 36/3), 3-Omar Gonzalez (Atlas/MEX; 48/3), 24-Nick Lima (San Jose Earthquakes; 2/0), 23-Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls; 4/0), 16-Daniel Lovitz (Montreal Impact; 2/0), 19-Matt Miazga (Reading, ENG; 11/1), 13-Tim Ream (Fulham, ENG; 26/1), 2-DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle United, ENG; 57/0)

MIDFIELDERS (7): 14-Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig, GER; 9/1), 4-Michael Bradley (Toronto FC, CAN; 143/17), 17-Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy; 7/2), 8-Weston McKennie (Schalke/GER; 7/1), 10-Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund/GER; 23/9), 15-Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC; 7/0), 6-Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew SC; 13/0)

FORWARDS (6): 7-Paul Arriola (D.C. United; 19/3), 20-Corey Baird (Real Salt Lake; 2/0), 18-Jonathan Lewis (New York City FC; 2/0), 11-Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC; 25/5), 21-Christian Ramirez (LAFC; 2/1), 9-Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew SC; 42/6)

Final

A deflected Gyasi Zardes' strike that looped over the 'keeper in the 81st minute provided the difference as the USMNT dominated possession against a rather toothless Ecuador side, but didn't generate a ton of good chances. Deserved winners, but still very much a work in progress. Chile should provide a much tougher test.

From Tuesday:

United States 1
Chile 1

Final

A well-worked fourth-minute goal from Christian Pulisic was quickly cancelled out by Chile, and the two sides played to a relatively even stalemate the rest of the way. Pulisic did suffer a quad strain that took him out of the match after 35 minutes. It tunred out that he had a slight muscle tear that'll put him out of action for about a month. This on the back on Weston McKennie suffering a ruptured ankle ligament in the game against Ecuador that put him out for the rest of the Bundesliga season and will have him scrambling to be ready for June's Gold Cup is not the kinda thing you want to hear considering these two (+ Tyler Adams) are the future (and well, current) midfield stalwarts for the USMNT.

----

In other news, pre-Gold Cup friendlies with Jamaica (June 5) and Venezuela (June 9) have all but been confirmed while home-and-homes with Canada and Cuba in the CONCACAF Nations League this fall have been confirmed after last night's Nations League draw.

Duane Holmes also gets a look after nearly helping Derby County get promoted to the Premier League. Tim Weah is with the U-20s at the World Cup (they've made the Round of 16 where they will be playing France).

After a severely lackluster showing in a 1-0 loss to Jamaica in a friendly that served as a last audition for players on the fringe of the roster, the USMNT released their 23-man roster for the Gold Cup. Pretty standard with the omission of young Werder Bremen striker Josh Sargent the only surprise. According to coach Gregg Berhalter, the loss of versatile Sebastian Lletget to injury forced the team to carry an extra winger instead of three target forwards.

GOALKEEPERS (3): 12-Sean Johnson (New York City FC; 7/0), 22-Tyler Miller (LAFC; 0/0), 1-Zack Steffen (Columbus Crew SC; 9/0)

DEFENDERS (8): 14-Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig/GER; 10/1), 3-Omar Gonzalez (Toronto FC/CAN; 50/3), 2-Nick Lima (San Jose Earthquakes; 3/0), 23-Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls; 5/0), 16-Daniel Lovitz (Montreal Impact/CAN; 4/0), 19-Matt Miazga (Chelsea/ENG; 13/1),
13-Tim Ream (Fulham/ENG; 29/1), 5-Walker Zimmerman (LAFC; 6/2)

MIDFIELDERS (6): 4-Michael Bradley (Toronto FC/CAN; 145/17), 20-Duane Holmes (Derby County/ENG; 1/0), 8-Weston McKennie (Schalke/GER; 8/1), 10-Christian Pulisic (Chelsea/ENG; 25/10), 15-Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC; 10/0), 6-Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew SC; 16/0)

FORWARDS (6): 17-Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC/CAN; 110/41), 7-Paul Arriola (D.C. United; 22/3), 21-Tyler Boyd (Vitória Guimãres/POR; 0/0), 18-Jonathan Lewis (Colorado Rapids; 4/0), 11-Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC; 27/5), 9-Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew SC; 44/7)

Three defensive brain farts were capitalized on by Venezuela, and despite some better offensive play, the U.S. scored no goals and heads into the Gold Cup with no momentum and some serious questions.

The hits keep coming as Tyler Adams, arguably the best American player over the last year, is out with a recurring groin injury and has been replaced on the roster by Reggie Cannon.

Goals: United States - Paul Arriola (28'), Tyler Boyd (51', 81'), Gyasi Zardes (55')

Zardes was brutal (his goal literally deflected in off his face). Team's finishing left at least three goals out there. Everyone else was OK-to-good.

Boyd plays with a skill and flair this side have been lacking.

Scored goals, clean sheet, three points. It's a start anyway.

In other Group D action, Panama defeated Trinidad in a lackluster affair, 2-0. Trinidad, in particular, looked very poor.

Group C sees a bit of a shake-up in the second matchday as after Jamaica and El Salvador played to a scoreless tie, Curacao pulled off a 1-0 upset of Honduras (despite getting out-shot like 47-6) to send Honduras crashing out of the tournament.
