"According to sources, Marquette coach Tom Crean, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Memphis coach John Calipari, Gonzaga's Mark Few and Notre Dame's Mike Brey are expected to be candidates for what is one of the few premier jobs in men's college basketball."

The minnesota job? I don't understand the quote

Yeah, sorry about that. The quote is talking about the expected candidates for the Kentucky job.

Personally I think Mike Brey would be most likely out of the guys mentioned. John Calipari I could also see going to UK, but I don't think Crean or Izzo will be leaving their schools.

He must know something we don't since he decided to go to Minnesota. Now, we have to see if he can keep players in-state for them.

My dad brought this up about a week ago. I don't know how he knew about it, but we he said it the first thing I thought was "Tubby doesn't seem like a good fit for Minnesota or the Big Ten." What do you guys think?

Regardless on how average Tubby is as a coach, and how much recruiting he DIDN'T do, this is a lot better for the Gophers than guys like Dan Monson. This will keep some bigger recruits in Minnesota, and hopefully draw a couple midwestern prospects.

And he gets to go from a crappy city in Lexington to a beautiful city in Minneapolis.

That's one of the only reasons that I think it makes sense, that and he gets to turn a program around - maybe.

Crean's name is always brought up, but he won't leave Marquette.

Tubby's not even that great of a coach, but I guess it's better than the garbage Minnesota has had recently.

Look at what Tubby does recruiting wise...not coaching... I know a number of players who have went on scholarship that have told me the head coach got them, but the assistants worked them. This IS a big deal.

Yeah I do not see Crean wanting the pressure of that job and I think Calipari can handle that sort of pressure that UK fans bring on. If Calipari were to go there would Derrick Rose be going with him as well?

What will rock your socks off is that since yesterday the Gophers have sold over 600 season tickets.

I went to a Gophers/Badgers game at the Barn back when MN was good. The Badgers wilted under the noise of that place in the final minutes of the game. A full place is not a good thing for any team coming into Williams Arena regardless of whether Tubby Smith can coach or recruit.

Interesting article about how Joel Maturi who worked with UW for years is basically trying to make Minnesota into Madison essentially

Tubby Smith to Minnesota is a steal. He is a terrific coach and a decent recruiter. What people fail to realize is that at Kentucky he was expected to contend for a national championship every year. That means he had to recruit nationally to compete with the other big boys (i.e. Florida, Kansas, Duke, etc.). Tubby wasn't very good at doing that and according to Gottlieb he has had heard from players recruited by Kentucky that didn't go there because the players felt the assistants were frankly incompetent. Minnesota has got a lot of good homegrown talent and if Tubby can keep these guys in the state of Minnesota will contend in the Big Ten.

I think it will come down to three guys for the Kentucky job: Tom Crean, Jay Wright, and Mark Few. Calipari had sanctions put on UMass after he left, and I think Kentucky will want to stay away from that. Brey would be plan D if those other 3 guys don't take the job. I do think Crean, Wright, or Few will take the job. Kentucky is one of the 4 or 5 premier jobs in the country. If Crean were ever to leave Marquette this would be the time. His kids would be starting school next year I believe. He's still young and has the energy to deal with everything that comes with the Kentucky job. I know Marquette pays Crean handsomely, but Kentucky has the resources (boosters) to pony up and make a bid for Crean. Ultimately I think Jay Wright will end up as the coach of Kentucky. I think Crean realizes that he may have a special team next year and will want to stick around for it. But it would be really, really tough to say no to Kentucky.
