1 coach removed from basketball inventor James Naismith, the former "Dean" of college basketball coaches has passed away at age 83. Smith won 2 NCAA championships in his tenure at North Carolina. Smith's college coach at Kansas was Phog Allen, who learned the game from Naismith. Smith also coached the 1976 Olympic Men's Basketball Team to a gold medal in Montreal.

Sad day for college basketball. In addition to his myriad accomplishments on the court, he was an early civil rights advocate and signed UNC's first African-American basketball player, Charlie Scott.

Suffice it to say, there haven't been many giants of the game like Dean Smith.
