Quite honestly, the performance of the pitching staff could not have started much worse.  I can remember in one of the pre-season threads people having some un-certainty in the youth movement and if Stearns had done enough to address the bullpen.  On both accounts, that un-certainty has panned out.  Hindsight is always 20/20 so it is easy to play devils advocate.  But, we are going to do it anyway.

If Stearns would have brought back Miley and Gonzalez, both could have easily fit financially.  Miley signed for $4.5 million and Gonzalez probably would have did a similar deal.  $9 million for those two starters would have been very team friendly and their presence would have had a domino effect that would have made the bullpen stronger.  Leaving Burnes and Perlata or Woodruff in the pen for another season would have given them a chance to develop one more year and not set them back in being a starter in the future.  But Stearns rolled the dice and missed badly and now this team is paying the price.  Maybe he brings Gonzalez back and that would be a start.  He could plug in pretty quickly.  But, that is really the only option until Jimmy Nelson could come back in another month or so.  By then though, it might be too late.

It made me scratch my head last night when it sounded like CC and Stearns were surprised by Houser's performance.  I am not sure what made them believe he was going to come in and beat the Cards.  He couldn't make the staff out of camp, why would that change now.

The lack of minor league depth is also a concern and all of the talk about shuttling guys back and forth from San Antonio is great, but the guys that are on that shuttle are who??  Taylor Williams - maybe Josh Fields at some point.  Not sure there is a lot of confidence in either.

Someone once said you can't win a title by the end of May - but you can lose one.  I am afraid that is what is happening right now.

Gio Gonzalez coming to the Brewers for 2 million with the potential to make another 2 million in performance bonuses.

The only thing I like about this is he is left handed but given the choice I would have rather added/kept Miley in the off season.  Still would have traded Anderson or Davies and kept Miley and then kept Burnes in the BP. Still a lot of time so we'll see what shakes out in the weeks ahead.
