Brewers enter play three losses behind the Cubs for the division.  If they don't win the division it will be because of their play against the Pirates.  They are only 5-11 against Pittsburgh this year.  The really interesting thing to focus on as this series starts is the battle between Christian Yelich and Scooter Gennett for the National League batting title.  The Brewers have never had a batting champion in the history of their franchise.  They have had five players finish runner up and two players finish third:

2nd Place
1973  George Scott .306      Winner:  Rod Carew .350
1980  Cecil Cooper .352       Winner:  George Brett  .390
1982  Robin Yount .331       Winner:  Willie Wilson  .332
1987  Paul Molitor .353        Winner:  Wade Boggs .363
2011  Ryan Braun .332        Winner:  Jose Reyes  .337
3rd Place
1991  Willie Randolph .331   Winner:  Julio Franco  .341
2012  Ryan Braun .319        Winner:  Buster Posey  .336

Yelich has had an unbelievable season so hopefully he can add this to his list of accomplishments.  However, Scooter would be an amazing story as well.  He would go from being cut by the Brewers two years ago to leading the National League in hitting.

Friday,  Jhoulys Chacín (14-8, 3.54) vs. RHP Ivan Nova (9-9, 4.07) FS Wisconsin 6:05
Saturday,  Zach Davies (2-6, 4.66) vs. RHP Trevor Williams (13-9, 3.16) FS Wisconsin 6:05
Sunday,  Wade Miley (5-2, 2.08) vs. RHP Joe Musgrove (6-9, 4.06) FS Wisconsin 12:35

And I'll never forget 2011 when Jose Reyes bunted for a base hit and then the Mets promptly took him out of the game so his average wouldn't go down anymore lol

It happened in the 1910 batting title race with Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie. Cobb sat out the last 2 games with a pretty large hitting average lead over Lajoie.   Cleveland played the St Louis Browns and the Browns manager had his 3rd baseman play way back and give Lajoie the bunt hits. Lajoie got 6 bunt hits and 2 other legit hits.  Lajoie ended the double header going 8 for 8 and apparently won the batting title over Cobb. Cobb was hated so much at that time, that is why that was done. It didnt work as the commissioner chased the players(3rd baseman) a coach and the manager out of MLB soon after and the batting title was awarded to Cobb. Apparently in later years it was found that Cobb was awarded 2 hits he hadnt gotten, but the title went to Cobb and stayed with Cobb - Bowie Kuhn refused to change it.

Get 2 of the 3.  I've pretty much conceded the division to the Cubs at this point....Keep winning series and get a home game for the wildcard play-in game.

Would love to see the White Sox stagger the Cubs and continue to tighten that noose.  It is still a tough 5 game stretch for the Brewers and they have to take care of their business.  Last night was a good sign with the bats coming alive.

Trevor Williams really dominated the Brewers last week, so tonight will be a tough challenge.  Davies has to have a good 5 innings tonight and keep this an even game.  If the Brewers can get the win tonight, I like the chances to get the sweep tomorrow.

Trevor Williams has pretty much dominated everyone since the All Star Break other than one start against the Cardinals where he gave up four runs in 6 innings of work. If not for Jacob De Grom, one could argue Williams has been the best pitcher in the National League the second "half" of the season.

Williams had made 10 starts since the All Star Break, and has given up a total of EIGHT runs, with four of them coming in the aforementioned start against the Cardinals. In six of the ten starts, Williams has given up ZERO runs, while going a minimum of six innings.

Those are just flat out dominant numbers!!!

You can make that seven out of eleven starts now, after Williams goes six shutout innings tonight.

If the Brewers and Cardinal tie for the wild card, home field is decided by regular series record which stands at 8-8 right now.  That makes today's game huge.  Win it and St. Louis will need a sweep to overtake the Brewers.  Lose it, along with a Cardinal win today, all the Cardinals will need to do is win the series to move into the top wild card spot.  The good news is that Wade Miley is on the mound today.  He has allowed 2 runs or fewer in 13 of his 14 starts.  The bad news is that he has only made it into the 6th inning of six of those starts meaning that the bullpen is going to have to cover some innings today probably weakening it for the start of the Cardinal series.   The Pirates look to have a solid rotation heading into 2019 and if they can find some hitting, the Central may be a four team race in 2019.

Brewers took care of the Pirates 13-6 today. Miley only made it through four innings, but extending the lead allowed the Brewers to use Lyles and Albers the final three innings. Both Knebel and Burnes needed less than 15 pitches to get through their innings too so nobody got taxed.

The Brewers also scored three runs on wild pitch and five in that inning without swinging the bat to produce any of the runs...lol.

The players in the league or so good, and yet, it can still look like a little league game at times.
