Brewers start a four game series in Pittsburgh against a team they have struggled with over the past three years.  Over the past three years the Pirates lead the overall series 32-25 and are 18-11 at PNC over the past three years.  I think the Brewers struggle at PNC because it is a big ball park and it's hard to hit home runs there which plays against the Brewers playing style.  Pirates starting pitching is in shambles right now due to injuries.  The Brewers might see two bullpen games over the weekend.

Thursday:  Chase Anderson (2-0, 3.25)  vs  Joe Musgrove (3-5, 4.27)
Friday:  Jhoulys Chacin (3-6, 4.88)  vs  Chris Archer (1-5, 5.75)
Saturday: Brandon Woodruff (7-1, 3.22)  vs TBA
Sunday:  Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.19)  vs  TBA

Craig Counsel announced today that Travis Shaw will be rejoining the team on Monday.  There are really only four corresponding moves that can happen.  I think these are the Brewers options:

1.  Go to a 7 man bullpen and a 5 man bench  -  They haven't done that all year so that's highly doubtful.
2.  DFA either Thames or Aguilar  -  Both players can't be optioned to the minors and would need to be released for Shaw to rejoin the team, which again is highly doubtful.
3.  Someone comes down with a phantom injury and Shaw takes that players spot.
4.  Hiura gets sent back down to limit his service time and Shaw is back at third and Moustakas is back at second  -  this is what I expect to happen.

Hiura has only walked once in 49 plate appearances and has a strike rate of 39% so far in the majors.  That will be the excuse they use to justify sending him back to San Antonio.

Brewers bats lit-up Pirates pitching to the tune of 11 runs and 18 hits with Moustakas and Grandal collecting four hits apiece and Cain adding three. Cain and Moustakas each drove in four runs, while Moose (twice), Thames and Grandal all went deep.

Only downside to this one was yet another erratic showing from Corbin Burnes, who gave up up three runs in 2/3rds of an inning in relief and forced the Brewers to use Hader to close out the eighth before the offense busted it open again in the ninth.

Jhoulys Chacin struggled all over the place, including walking three runs in during a six-run Pirates third inning and the Brewers couldn't dig out of the hole, losing 9-4. Brewers offense was supplied by a Jesus Aguilar solo HR and a Keston Hiura three-run shot. Hiura was 3 for 4 and is now hitting .296 with a .345 OBP but apparently doesn't walk enough so he will be replaced by a currently incompetent player returning from the DL.

Interesting game yesterday.

Hard to believe that a team as bad as is posted here could be in 1st place, but there they are.

I didn't think Hiura was going to stick due to his defense.
But I learned something a long time ago.

The kid has proven me wrong.
He can HIT!

I think a trade is brewing!

BTW: did I mention the Brewers are in 1st place?
Who'd of ever thunk it!

Brewers take 3 of 4 in Pittsburgh as Zach Davies goes another eight strong innings with Claudio and Burnes working around some trouble in the ninth to win 4-2.

Eric Thames was 2 for 3 with three RBIs on a two-run HR and a run-scoring double.

DB, is it a 1.5 game lead?

How can that be?

Good series win that is for sure in Pitt.  That hasn't come easy lately.  The flurry of moves today clears the way to Jimmy Nelson's return.  Chacin is not right and the back apparently has flared up - even after he said he was fine.  I can see them sitting him a bit here, especially if Jimmy has a good outing on Wednesday.  The question I have is with Peralta.  He is getting the start late in the week - and he hasn't thrown it well lately.  If he struggles again, he can't start again.

And with bringing Travis Shaw back - I don't see a way they send Hiura down.  Maybe with Moose hurting his finger, he ends up on the 10 day IL - but Hiura deserves to stay - and play.
