Final

Wolves trailed 22-11 at halftime but Mike McCarthy must have been present to give the halftime speech as the Wolves looked like a new team in the 2nd half and after cutting down on their turnovers were able to rally back for a victory over De Pere.

To echo what Ryan alluded to, a completely different team of Wolves in the second half. First time I got to watch Algoma this year, and I felt coming into the season the biggest thing the Wolves had to replace in Taylor Schmidt (even considering how she filled up a stat sheet) was her absolute refusal to lose. Algoma seemed very complacent (?un-wolf like??) throughout the 1st half, allowing De Pere?s defense to force the ball well out from the three point line, along with 13 turnovers, according to Andrew Pekarek. I still saw a bit of questionable effort in the second half, but at the same time saw seniors Kennedy Blahnik (14 points) and Meg Ryan (10 points) subtly show the play in the first half was unacceptable. Algoma has now beat De Pere 3 of the last 4 years.

For De Pere, they certainly seem to like a slower paced game, in which they are both disciplined in limiting paint touches on defense and working the ball for a quality shot on offense. On offense they tried to establish center Sarah Kuehn, who while certainly knows how to put defenders in bad spots, did not help herself out by missing something like 5 FTs in just the 1st quarter alone. With Algoma trying to limit the good looks for Kuehn, it created some open looks and quality scoring chances for other Redbirds, as Algoma seemed to struggle a bit with help defense throughout. In the end, while De Pere certainly has a high quality team, it just doesn?t seem to have that athlete or two who shows the initiative to take over the game down the stretch.

As expected, despite a few too many good looks for Kuehn, it was Algoma?s post players Kennedy Blahnik and Anna Dier make the crucial plays in the second half. Blahnik especially can just be a beast at times, with a great combination of strength and speed. She can guard nearly any type of player on defense, has very good technique in rebounding, and is absolutely deadly from 15 feet and closer while on offense. Dier. while still working through some of the struggles of being a younger player, makes plays you just don?t expect a 5?11? sophomore to make ? 4 blocks in today?s game, and both her and Blahnik are great ball handlers for being ?post players.? Overall, I think this team will be able to play with anyone they match up with this year, however how great they become will largely be dictated by how Blahnik and Ryan take on senior leadership and exemplifying that refusal to lose attitude that Coach Zastrow teams always seem to have.
