I am at a loss of words on how the fing you fire Bo Pellini to hire Mike Riley ?

Michigan should scoop up Pellini now .

As a DC? Sure. HC? Not a chance.
@2GuysFromWI

Harbaugh will have Urban Meyer retired from OSU by 2020.

While older, Riley is a good coach. He got the most out of his players at a school that has limited resources, and is second fiddle Oregon aka Nike U within the state. I'll be curious to see what he can do with the unlimited resources at Nebraska.

I agree, it started as a head scratcher, but thinking about it more it seems like a pretty solid hire. He got quite a bit out of much lesser players and nowhere near the resources. He has a pretty strong track record of coaching players up. If he can get better recruits than he did at OSU (which he should easily be able to do) and coach them up in the same way, it should be a good hire.

He is definitely the anti-Bo. Incredibly nice guy who has a knack for winning big games/upsets. However, also has a tendency to lose games he should win. I think in 5 years they might be a bit better than currently, occasionally pushing for conference championships and big bowls, but not a powerhouse like the blue hairs want.

I'm wondering if he might not have that tendency once he has more talented players.

Gil Brandt tweeted that Nebraska offered Bielema the Nebraska job, but he decided to stay at Arkansas. Too bad.

As for Riley, he doesn't have midwestern or Big Ten ties, but neither did Gary Anderson. Nebraska goes all over for their players though so I'm not sure that is a big deal. Plus, he can hire assistants that do have Midwestern ties or ties to recruiting areas in the Midwest/Big Ten.

Mike Riley, of course, is an offensive-minded coach. He and former Badger O/C, Paul Chryst are big buddies. Riley hired Chryst on 2 separate occasions to be the Beavers' OC. Riley likes to throw the ball, so it will be interesting to see if Nebraska's offensive style quickly changes to match Riley's past leanings. I would think Riley will go out of his way to hire a top-notch defensive coordinator who will have a lot of leeway & authority running things on that side of the ball.

Regarding Bret Bielema being offered the Nebraska job ... no way is BB going to accept the BIG RED job when he is the heir-apparent to Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, whenever Ferentz finally decides to hang up coaching the Hawkeyes (which is probably not too far off in the near future).

Ehh- would you turn down 2.7 million dollars a year through 2020 when it seems that he doesn't have to do much better than 7-5?
