Lacey Holsworth lost her battle with cancer last night. If you don't know who she is, Lacey was a cancer patient who became best friends with Michigan State star Adreian Payne. Payne brought her to the slam dunk contest, carried her on the court on Senior night and also let her cut down the net when they won the Big Ten Tourny. If you haven't seen the story on the Big Ten Network, here it is
Cancer is a terrible disease and I wouldn't wish it upon even the person I hated most. I think Payne is one of the best all around people in college basketball. What he did for Lacey, just went beyond what he had to do. He did anything for her and that makes me respect him and the MSU basketball program, including Izzo, even more.
I had been following the story for some time on the Big Ten Network. For whatever reason, it totally escaped me that her disease was anywhere near the terminal stage.
It was very evident that Adreian Payne loved that little girl and visa-versa. My heart goes out to Lacey's family, Adreian Payne, and the MSU basketball team, coaches, staff and fans.
