                                        Packers cut punter B.J. Sander

The Green Bay Packers Monday released punter B.J. Sander and linebacker Kevin Schimmelmann. [link=http://www.packers.com/team/staff/thompson_ted/]Ted Thompson[/link], Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the moves.

Sander, a 6-foot-4, 218-pound veteran from Ohio State, was the Packers' third of three selections in the third round of the 2004 draft after winning the Ray Guy award as the nation's top collegiate punter. Last season, he averaged 39.2 gross yards on 64 punts, with 11 inside the 20 and two touchbacks.

Schimmelmann was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Stanford in May.

I am glad they let him go, who is the other punter?
A Playoff will be much more fair than the BCS.

Jon Ryan, a CFL veteran with a much better leg...still needs work on his hang time though.

McCarthy is a football coach, not a politician.

I think Sherman became a politician, not a very good football coach.

In the end, his fear and trepidation cost him.

3rd round draft pick on a punter??

Absurd!! []

sherman should be blamed for taking a punter in the third round, but he shouldn't be blamed for sanders sucking. it hard to believe that such a leg in college turns into 12 yard punts in the nfl.

Agreed.....of all the NFL positions that really don't change much from college to pros is the Punter....kickers have different hash marks, QB's have to deal with the faster pace...all other players have to deal with stronger/faster player competition.
Punters is just them and the ball.....is the pro ball that much different than the college ball?

agreed sherman was a bad GM but a good coach. there really was not a legitimate reason for him being fired IMO other than not a lot of deep playoff runs, which i understand. but I am happy with what mcarthy has done so far

IIRC, Sander was maddeningly inconsistent at Ohio State as well, and in fact was Andy Groom's back-up the majority of his time there.

What's so questionable about the pick was that they traded up to draft a guy not even considered the draft's best punter, and a guy that pretty much every personnel guy around the league thought the Packers would have easily gotten in the 6th- or 7th-round.

A draft pick wasted....
I dont like drafting kickers or punters, you can most of the time find a good one that wasnt drafted, and sign them for less.

Not only one pick wasted, but all three of the packers third round picks that year were wasted. The other two, Joey Thomas and Donnell Washington, are no longer with the team anymore as well.

Heck, they all were cut by the team, no trades or losses to Free Agency.
