44-24 NW at half. Nw could not miss and OHS could not seem to get anything to drop. Some nights are just like that.
Cograts to NW of a impressive game, and thanks goes out to the Chieftains on an exciting, competitive season. You worked hard and never once gave up.

Osceola got into bonus right at the end of the first quarter. Should get a lot of free throw opportunties here in the second quarter.

89 POINTS [] what happened? Is Northwestern that much of a offensive machine? or did the chieftains kinda let up as the game went on? I guess the score shocks me a bit because I remember seeing a pretty good team in Oceaola through out the regular season.
It looks like NR will have their hands full come thursday, but I have confidence in them.

I went on-and-off watching the game. From what I saw, it seemed like Northwestern was making everything they threw up. Osceola did not look like much in this game. They seemed to have a lot of trouble on the perimeter.

Northwestern isnt really that great

They were good enough to take second in your conference. What is the point of your comment anyway, other than to try to unnecessarily stir things up? []

Bluechip, you need to tell everyone in NR to vote yes to the refrendum on april 3. We despratly need this new High school. I guess it will be very close to the Wasua West high school and Gym which I hear is awesome. so all NR people need to get out and vote. I really hope this thing passes![sm=m6.gif]

n-target Tigers advance

The Daily Telegram - 02/28/2007

The Northwestern High School boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs with a 89-56 win over the Osceola Chieftains Tuesday night at Maple.?We had a lot of energy coming into it. We were confident,? Northwestern senior Kelsey Moreland said. ?We knew if we brought the ball up quick and pressured them on defense that we?d win this game. It was all about effort, and it was 110 percent from everyone.?
The Tigers (18-3) now play at New Richmond at 7 p.m. Thursday. Only 450 tickets will be available for the game, so fans are advised to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets go on sale today at Northwestern High School.
Even though the Tigers, seeded fourth, will technically be the underdogs when they go up against the No. 1 seed, New Richmond, senior William Koepp doesn?t feel Northwestern is going into the game with any sort of disadvantage.
?I feel it?s even,? Koepp said. ?I don?t feel we?re a four seed; we?re much better than a four seed. I think it will be a pretty even game.?In order to stay in the playoffs, the Tigers will need to give their best effort.
?We?ve got to play just as hard (as we did tonight) ? every game counts,? Moreland said. ?They?re a big team (and) they play a half-court game, so we?ve got to push the ball like we did tonight and play some good defense.?
Northwestern played good defense in Tuesday?s game, but it was the team?s offense that stood out. The Tigers started the game with two quick inside shots to go up 4-0. Osceola battled back to tie the game at six with 4:57 left to play in the quarter. Northwestern then went on an 8-1 run, with four different players scoring, to lead by seven points, 14-7, at 2:35. The Chieftains? Andy Wilson hit a 3-pointer seconds later to cut the Tigers? lead to four, but by the end of the quarter Northwestern still led 18-12.One of the few things that seemed to be going against the Tigers in the first quarter was fouls. By the end of the first quarter, Northwestern led Osceola 7-2 in team fouls.
?We got in foul trouble in the first quarter, and then again in the second quarter we picked up a couple,? NHS coach Dan Cowley said. ?But I?ve got to give credit to our bench. They came in and they were able to keep things going and got us through several stretches. We can go to the bench and not drop off a bit.?Two players in specific helped the Tigers when starters picked up early fouls and had to go to the bench.?Devin (Doskey) came in and he was just like a man possessed,? Cowley said. ?He came in and got a bunch of boards for us, kept the ball alive, played physical on their inside guys and actually even gave us a lift at that point.
?Donny Hissa came in off the bench and gave us, again, some really good minutes. Donny?s a big kid for a freshman, he?s 6-foot-4, and he was able to match up with their bigger kids inside.?
Northwestern pulled ahead at the start of the second quarter and never looked back. Moreland began the Tigers? run by hitting two back-to-back 3-pointers to extend Northwestern?s lead to 24-12.?I wanted to lift my team up somehow, and the only way I know how to is by shooting the ball. I felt hot in warm-ups, so I just shot,? Moreland said. ?It?s nice to have teammates who set you up, set screens for you and get you open looks.?The Tigers continued to be hot from the field for the rest of the quarter, and by halftime they had a 44-24 lead over the Chieftains.Seven Northwestern players scored in the second quarter to combine for 26 points while four Osceola players scored for 12 points.
?The balance definitely helps,? Koepp said. ?If they key on one guy, another guy will step up, and that creates a very hard scoring attack to stop.?
It was Koepp who began the scoring for Northwestern in the third quarter, as he hit a 3-pointer and a shot in the lane to make it 49-24 at 6:48. The Tigers continued to play solidly on both sides of the court and never led by less than 20 points. By the end of the quarter Northwestern was up 66-35.
The Tigers didn?t let up in the fourth quarter. At the 2:32 mark they led by 40 points, 85-45. The Chieftains made up a little ground in the final minutes, but Northwestern got the 89-56 victory.
?The game plan, if you want to make it real simple, was just basically to make it like a track meet,? Cowley said. ?We felt our advantage over them was speed and quickness, and the more that we could make the game up and down the better things would be for us. Obviously, we shot the ball well and that just made everything else work. Certainly tonight it all came together. That?s what it?s supposed to look like.?
In addition to the Tigers? impressive shooting, Cowley liked how his team handled the physical nature of the game.
?That?s the thing I was most pleased with,? Cowley said. ?We haven?t been a real physical team, typically, all year. When we have run into a few teams that have been pushing us around and whatnot, early in the year we struggled with that. This was a big, strong team that we just played tonight, and we out-boarded them.?
Northwestern outrebounded Osceola 41-23 in the game and had 13 offensive rebounds.
Four Tigers finished in double figures. Freshman Steve Tecker led with 22 points, and Moreland was not far behind with 20. Koepp added 14 points for Northwestern and Doskey had 12 off of the bench.
?There was a lot on the line for us seniors,? Koepp said. ?We didn?t want to go out with a lose at home. We wanted to make this win special for all the seniors since it?s our last game at home. Coach let us know, and we all knew, how important it was, and I feel like we executed to today. It was a great win, good feeling. Gave us lots of confidence for our next game.?

Is New Richmond ever going to build a larger gym? They have by far the largest enrollment in the conference and yet have the smallest gym (or second smallest w/ Durand). It's not suitable for playoff games.
