With 10 members, Conference "B" and "C" would get zero non-conference games, unless they play an abbreviated conference schedule.

I think someone needs a nap.

"I just think that those 2 schools left the WVC so they could beat up people insted of being the ones who are getting beat up."

Who got "beat up" last Friday?

Anyway, this is the brainchild of the WIAA, not of any of the individual schools listed. Yes the schools do have some imput which how Rhinelander and Merrill got switched. If Merrill would not have wanted to leave the valley, Rhinelander would have been forced into the GNC by the WIAA.

Also lets try not to be short sighted. The enrollments I have listed are the enrollments this year, what I would like to see and don't have, yet, are the projected enrollments for all the schools involved. I think that would tell more of the story. I know this much, over the next 5 years the enrollments for Antigo, Merrill and Rhinelander (even though they are not moving) will look more like those of the of the other GNC schools than they will the Valley schools.

Finally, nothing is for certain yet, this still has to be approved by the WIAA Board of Control, which I think it will be, then the schools have 40 days to appeal to the WIAA so this won't be decided one way or the other until November.

traditionally though what schools get beat up in the valley in the major sports???

Merrill, Antigo, Rhinelander......that is what I was referring to, but occasionally those schools field good teams, like Antigo and Rhinelander have this year.

The last I checked, they have been in the same conference for the last 41 years, this year being 42, but do not play each other this or next year due to scheduling.

I understand why it was broken up this way, but i would have liked to see the old WIAC teams put together.

I think this is complete crap......i'll look at this Conference by conference

Great Northern Conference
Antigo - 1034
Lakeland - 953
Medford - 788
Merrill - 1175
Mosinee - 688
Northland Pines - 560
Tomahawk - 546

Ok, does anyone see this??? The two former Valley schools will be the biggest schools, and probably the most dominant. Sure, Pines and Lakeland might have an advantage in hockey, and Lakeland might own in football, but come on, I just think that those 2 schools left the WVC so they could beat up people insted of being the ones who are getting beat up.

WVC
DCE - 1733
Marshfield - 1324
Rhinelander - 1178
SPASH - 2568
Wausau East - 1335
Wausau West - 1679
Wis. Rapids - 1984

I'm happy to see that Rhinelander had the balls to stay. But who would want to make join the WVC??? With the powers of Rapids, SPASH, Marshfield, and Everest the conference will still be dominant, but this will make for some interesting non-conference games.

I really have no issues with the cloverbelt or Marawood re-allignments.

But for football I do.

Football Conference "A"
Altoona - 470
Cadott - 290
Fall Creek - 286
McDonell Central - 247
Neillsville - 428
Osseo-Fairchild - 305
Regis - 250
Stanley Boyd - 326

Football Conference "B"
Auburndale - 285
Colby - 400
Edgar - 230
Marathon - 293
Park Falls/Butternut/Glidden/Mercer - 313+57+81+76=527
Phillips - 354
Pittsville - 241
Prentice/Rib Lake - 169+189=358
Spencer/Marshfield Columbus - 245+153=398
Stratford - 253

Football Conference "C"
Abbotsford - 203
Assumption - 186
Athens - 201
Augusta - 197
Gilman - 167
Greenwood - 155
Loyal - 229
Newman - 211
Owen-Withee - 203
Thorp - 234

Pools A and C look alrite, but whats up with B????

Pittsville/Edgar/Stratford all in the same pool will make for awesome games, but lets be honest. Phillips and Butternut/Gliden/Mercer/Park Falls will be a long hall for all the teams. Like the current Marawood there is really no long drives for the teams except for Prentice/Rib Lake. Maybe even Athens. Making the trip to where Butternut/Gliden/Mercer/Park Falls will be playing home games or even for them to come to the southern schools (Spencer, Pittsville, Colby) the ride alone will wear them out.

Maybe I just dont like change, but these changes seem really dumb.

Altho Mosinee is so small compared to the Rest of the WVC, they offer the same sports for the most part and could put up a big challenge to the schools.

I know it wont happen, I could see it now seeing as Antigo and Merrill want to leave.

Let's take a look at Tradition.

I'm not sure if non-conference games are included in this or not.

Tradition isn't just the last 10 or so years. Yes recently the smaller schools have had there struggles as enrollments continue to decline. But as far as tradition is concerned I think the numbers speak for themselves.

Also lets keep in mind what is actually fueling the realignment plan. First is the Lumberjack conference falling apart and second is enrollments. No one is going to a different conference to keep from being "beat up". The WIAA is doing what they feel is best to keep some sort of competitive balance. This isn't a popularity contest for the WIAA, they are here to do what they feel is best for HS athletics in Wisconsin, regardless if we feel it is right or wrong, popular or not. Someone has to make the tough decisions.

Finally, lets break this down:
"I just think that those 2 schools left the WVC so they could beat up people insted of being the ones who are getting beat up."
Think about what you said here for a moment, if you had a choice between getting beat up or beating someone up, which would you choose?

Quote 0 0
wr88
I'll buy that, but there is also the idea that if you play tough teams all the time, and lose, it will only make you tougher. I just really have a hard time thinking about the WVC as 7 insted of 9.

I learned this a few years ago. The only attitude(that will do you any good anyway) in life to have about change is to realize that change is constant, that we need to embrace it, and then champion it!!!![]

The biggest thing here is that Mosinee will no longer be playing in the Cloverbelt, a conf. they need to get out of fast. Plus I love the name Great Northern Conference. Not sure I like the cloverbelt/marawood conference names A, B, C? I remember when a bunch of Middle Border, Heart O' North, and Dunn-St Croix conferences combined to make the Red, White, and Blue divisions. Anybody remember that, crazy? Maybe Cloverbelt, Marawood, and Cloverwood? Maybe white cloverbelt, red cloverbelt and ladino cloverbelt?
