I guess I should be going to class on Wednesday considering I go to school and live in Madison. But, I just really don't want to.

I'm also confused as to why some schools don't cancel class the day before Thanksgiving. I know a lot of schools out East get an entire week off...

I agree with you Jon. Why should a university change their practices to abide by your personal choice? Better yet, why do we need to hear about it?

Just skip, who cares. I skipped class about 75% of the time when I was in school.

I don't skip that often, but I've been skipping classes a lot more often than last year.

I actually found that I got better grades in the classes I skipped than in the ones I attended. I think it's because since I didn't go to class, I actually read & studied the material seriously before exams so that I knew it. In the classes I went to, I spaced out, didn't take good notes, and figured I didn't have to study that hard because I would remember stuff because I sat in class. That's just how it was for me though.

Here's a classic. I skipped the first day of class during the spring semester 3 years ago & got the class schedule the next day. I looked to see when the tests were, and since we only had 2 exams, those are the only two days I showed up. Well I didn't read the rest of the class description too closely, and it stated in there that you get up to 3 absences and after that, your grade drops a half letter grade with each absence there after. I knocked out A's on both tests & was totally baffled when I received an F. I was able to talk him into giving me a D- since I argued that I obviously didn't need to attend class if I still got A's on the exams. He thought it was kind of a smart ass remark to make, but I guess he somewhat saw my point.

Yeah that's the darn problem with those classes and attendance grades... We're paying and it's our responsibility to show up to the classes if we want, but if we get decent grades besides without showing up, there should be no penalty... but looking at the Professors side he is there to teach people and not empty seats. But then, maybe we should just all move to Online College classes and forget the professors![](Sarcasm)

Looking back on it all...

When I was in college attendance policies annoyed me. I shared much the same opinion as a few of you...if I can learn the material without being here, then why do i need to be here?

With that said I now think they are a fair practice. What did I do when skipped class? I would go to the cutest girl that I knew took the best notes and ask to copy hers. Then I would take them to the library and photo copy them knowing damn well if I had a good set of notes I could just memorize them and do very well on any test. So what's the problem? I didn't learn jack from doing this. I learned the info for the test and promptly forgot it.

Now you can say, that is my problem and it was my choice. That is true but I do believe the institution is responsible for ensuring their graduates actually learned the necessary information while at school as the University's reputation lies on the performance of their graduates.

I don't mind attendance policies.

If my professor says flat out 1st day of class that he/she doesn't care if people miss 2-3-4 classes, I am for sure going to miss 2-3-4 classes maybe more.

Now if a teacher sets an attendance policy as 5-10% of the grade, I am going to be there almost every class.

Also, there is a pretty obvious attendance policy to better grade ratio for me. If I go to class, I do better. So I do take advantage of some professors policies, but at the same time, I can't blame the ones with the policy that directly helps my GPA
