Quite an honor for Jerel, just a sophomore, to be on a list like that.

Lets hope he gets back healthy for the NCAAs.....

He is a pest on D, no doubt, 2.1 steals per game isn't even a good enough indicator of the effect he has as a defender.

I think he also deserves the award for the opposing defenses POY for his 4.1 TO's per game.

If only the NCAA kept an official stat on deflections, the way Marquette does. (Im sure many other teams do as well) The deflections per game that he puts up are rediculous. Crean always talks about the team records that Wade had in terms of deflections, and that Jerel is always beating them, if not, right on his heels every game.

In terms of his TOs... There bound to happen when you play with the aggresiveness that he does. Jerel McNeal loses all of his effectiveness if he stops being aggressive and stops plaing with the intensity that he does.

There was a great, very well written column in the Marquette Tribune today about Jerel and this very topic:

NICE! Awesome good for McSteal, the man is a monster on the defensive end and has had a better shot selection this year. I think he will have a total breakout year on the offensive end next year.
http://chuckcorner.blogspot.com- Please Comment, I finally am starting to work on this on a consistant basis. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Does anyone know the status of this because i was at the Marquette Pitt game and it looked like he had a cast but not like a hard waterproof one. I didnt know about the injury intill about 7:30 game night

During the Pitt game, he was wearing more of a "hard brace" you could say, rather than a cast. I recognized it because I once injured my thumb sliding in a baseball game and had to wear the same exact brace. I tought myself how to swing with it on (maninly because I was/am very stubborn) and I got used to it. In Jerel's case, it would be pretty awkward to shoot and dribble with it on. I would imagine he has to get to the point where he can play without it on his hand before he is cleared.

He wont play in the St. Johns game ([link=http://gomarquette.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030607aab.html]http://gomarquette.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030607aab.html[/link]) and from the way Crean sounded in the paper and on his radio show, it doesnt look good the rest of the way either.

Losing him is a huge blow obviously. If this team wants to do anything in the BET and NCAAs, they are going to need someone to step up every game the way Wes, Cubi, and Kinsella did against Pitt. When you lose someone of Jerel's caliber, the slack has to be accounted for somewhere. IMHO, for some reason I have a feeling that Wes Matthews could have a very big March. No substance to it, its just a gut feeling I have.....

Oh, and Dominic having a nice run starting Wednesday night wouldnt hurt either.....[]
