Bielema says Cooper can play in opener

- University of Wisconsin defensive end Jamal Cooper, originally suspended for the Badgers' football season-opener Saturday against Bowling Green, has been cleared to play.

UW coach Bret Bielema, who suspended Cooper in May for failing to meet the specific academic standards, announced his change of heart today.

"Jamal earned the suspension I placed upon him in the spring," Bielema said in a release. "He was not taking care of his business off the field. But I believe he has earned a reprieve from the suspension by doing what was necessary to get his house back in order academically.

"I told Jamal in the spring that his future with our program would depend on how he handled his academic responsibilities. Jamal responded by putting forth the kind of effort in the classroom that I knew he was capable of."

Cooper suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 3 at North Carolina in 2005. He had seven tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack, before suffering the injury.

The kid is a serious talent. Let's pray he can both stay healthy and give the STUDENT part of "student athlete" his continued attention. He's one to watch if he can stay on the field.
