I'm sure there will more excuses to follow. The point is that they did not get as far as they did last year and you are suppose to be getting better when you return your players. The reason for people knocking Iola is because of how cocky they are. What some of those guys said to other teams after they beat them was classless.

Ill sum up Iola basketball in one word IMO.... disappointing. All the talent in the world, wont make it to state next year.

Trash talking is not part of the game. It is called being disciplined and having a coach that doesn't stand for it and has control over his team.

I'll be the first to admit I was one of those people when Mike Griffen was in 6th grade that honestly believed there was no way Iola wouldn't win state when he was in high school. I'm not from Iola so I'm more shocked than disappointed that they haven't been there yet but have also learned over the years that there are so many great coaches and players out there and it's very difficult to even make it to state. I graduated from Manawa and we have never been to state in boys or girls basketball which is almost unbelievable when you see a school like Cuba City that is down there every year. I hear people talk about Iola being undisciplined and selfish but I haven't seen them enough recently to say the same. I do know there are some very good alumni athletes in Iola that have stuck around the area and I would guess they would be giving some of those guys their 2 cents if they really do play that way. I know last year I was not very impressed with their head coach and some of the decision making throughout the year. At this point I don't think you can look for a new coach seeing they've made sectionals the past two years in a row. I'm sure the players are not satisfied with that though and are going to have to find a way to get over the hump next year and get to state. Who are the teams next year besides Roncalli that will be in the way and who those teams returning? I believe Algoma will be very good next year but have also heard they may go to D4. Wega should still be ok but won't be able to take Iola. Amherst returns Nate Martin so they should be up there. What does Brillion have coming back besides Popp? St. Mary Cental loses Frozena and I don't know what they have besides him.
Connor Kurki could be starting QB for Badgers this year no doubt!!

Valders is the smallest school in D-2 and they went to sectionals with 5 starting juniors. There's a chance they might move back to D-3. They match up with Iola pretty evenly if not better talentwise. Coaching and chemistry i dont know enough about either team.
