Is the most overrated defender in the league. He's above average at best.
In the first game JVG broke down multiple sequences where Howard loafed back on D and the Lakers got wide open 3s because his teammates tried to cover his guys. I'm talking numerous possessions that he had ample time to get back on D and barely made it across half court in time to see the Lakers put 3 on the board.
Furthermore, Pau Gasol has made him look like an amatuer all series long. In Game 5 Gasol got the ball, turned and faced, and took one step to the baseline. Howard mugged him with both arms, clearly unprepared to guard him face to face. Gortat came in and did 10x the job that Howard was doing even though they ran their offense through Gasol.
In all honesty, he's the best weak side defender in the game, but he has no hustle and can't guard even averagely skilled offensive players one on one, despite having the athletic advantage every single time he laces up. Overall, he's above average at best and an embarrassment to the DPOY trophy.
I'm going to have to agree that Howard's defensive preformance in the Finals has not been DPOY quality. In the early parts of Game 5 Andrew Bynum was getting rebounds over Howard like there was no tomorrow same with Gasol all game. You were right about him being a good weakside defender but in this case in Game 5 it hurt the Magic as the Lakers were able to get a lot of easy put backs as Howard came over to help on several drives. Howard at times has been slow getting back but often times he is the one who beats the other oppenents Center down the court. In the off-season Howard needs to work on Stamina and Work on getting and using more Post Moves to become a better Overall Player and not just using his size to make plays.
