Anyone who pays attention to D5 basketball, especially up north knows this is going to be a fun game this Thursday in Superior, with the winner being considered the favorite to represent the Spooner sectional at state.

Both teams are ranked and both teams play similar up and down basketball. This match up in the past was usually a Drummond led team behind Josh Hanson who would play slow and methodical. Usually meaning first team to 40 would win. With these 2 teams, each team could have 40 by halftime. Frederic is led by SRs Zach Schmidt and Austin Kurkowski. Schmidt is a good leaper and slasher, while Kurkowski can shoot the lights out. Junior guard Roman Poirier is as quick as they come and has shut down opponents best scorers all year basically.

Washburn is led by D2 recruit, Cody Tomlinson. Tomlinson has been on the radar all year long. WSNs Mark Miller has mentioned him multiple times in his Twitter mentions and articles/podcasts here on WisSports. Long athletic guard/wing that can jump out of the gym and also shoot the lights out. He is Washburns all time leading scorer as well. Inside they have 6 foot 6 inch JR Brant Schick who also has schools looking at him.

Anyone that knows these teams have a prediction for this game?

I'd say the West Lakeland Conference was probably stronger than the Indianhead this year, so Frederic has been tested. Meanwhile Washburn has a long winning tradition - and their only losses were to Wausaukee (D5 sectional team) and a one-pointer to Northwestern (D3 sectional team). Not sure either team has played in a gym as large as Superior, - hopefully they draw a nice crowd. This game could be a dandy.... good luck to both teams.

I love me a good small school showdown... I also love offense too. Too bad I'm four hours away and won't be able to bear witness to this one. Should be a great game.
