My brother is doing a research project and for those that know, which companies are legitimate and which are scams when it comes to donating to children in third world countries? Some nice solid facts or references would be appreciated, thanks.

This post is sarcasm:

I can tell you that The Human Fund (Seinfeld reference) is clearly a legit charitable organization.

There are probably only a handful of legit ones out there and I would only donate to the ones on tv, cause those have to be real...right?

A guy came up to me at the store I work at in downtown Milwaukee a few weeks back with a picture of a starving African toddler and "his story" underneath it in horrible marker and was holding a cannister. Soliciting is illegal in front of our store so I went to remove him, but not before he asked me for a small donation of $5 for "this youngster." The guy had a ragidity, patched beard, missing front teeth, looks like he had shit his pants 2 weeks ago and had a torn up Adidas black jacket.

I bet he was legit.

I still honestly believe this is one of the greatest songs of all time, because each of these singers donated their times and talents, and it was heartfelt. Plus, I mean, just to see each of their facial expressions while singing was great. The Boss, Huey, Cyndi Lauper,Kenny Rodgers, watching Willie Nelson look like he didn't know the words, and then one of my favorite singers of all time, Stevie Wonder.

This would be top 3 songs of all time for me, just for what it mean.t You'll never see a group of singers/performers get together like this ever again. My god, check out the hair on a lot of these people. And is that Kenny Loggins? Haha.

Serious though, the Feed the Children program is a great place to start. [link=http://www.feedthechildren.org/]www.feedthechildren.org[/link] . If you want another nice fund that I personally have given to in the past affter raising money, try I think it was something like Plan USA where you could sponsor children. We raised money 10 years ago in college to sponsor some kids in Africa. Thanks for negging my post on the first one though (whoever it was). If you were a Seinfeld fan you would understand the The Human Fund and the irony.

Theres an organization that I am part of called Invisible children. This organization is 100% legit. It's built around trying to free children in Northern Uganda that are abducted from their homes in their sleep in the middle of the night by the LRA, a rebel army in Uganda. These children, most of them 13-16 are forced to fight for the LRA under the rule of Joseph Koney. One man is terroizing the country of Uganda, the congo, and Sudan. If a child tries to run they are shot dead. Joseph Koney is a coward that hides in the bush, but all of these children (I think 3,000 right now) are so scared that they fight and die just so more children can be abducted. Millions of Africans have been killed in this war, it's Africa's longest running war. Invisible Children is so close to freeing these children.

90% of the LRA is made up of abducted children.

That's great info. Next time you hear someone complaining about how "bad" they have it in this country, or complain about how this country is ran, please relay this story to them.

I still find it embarrassing/sad when most Americans have no idea about the things that are going on in a lot of African countries. From the ongoing corrupt politics in South Africa to the things going on in Darfur, to the malaria and other diseases that are common across the continent. The quote "No one cares about Africa" is probably somewhat true, but I think it more or less has to do with people just being uneducated about it.

I won't preach to the choir, but more of our efforts need to be focused on the troubled African countries. Instead, everyone is so caught up in the Middle East that they don't care/have no idea what's going on in Africa and it's a shame.

As for legit organizations there's obviously ONE, Make Poverty History, Oxfam, Save the Children, etc.

sadly being the world power that we are, we are forced to be more concerned with issues like north korea and iran developing nuclear weapons. Bush actually gave more aid to africa than any other president, but news stories about how South Korea might get nuked generally taken the spotlight over pressing issues where more people are actually dying.
"Son, what are you doing sleeping in my daughter's dormroom?"

-"Then im really late for class. Where are my pants?"
