Much better week from everyone, topped by late entrant badgers5719 who went a perfect 7-0. The big blemish for everyone was Marshall/Cambridge, where only badgers and kg19 picked it correctly. kg was briefly in the lead this weekend, until Wisconsin Heights smashed North Shore-Country Day and evened things up again.

Pick 'Em Standings through Week 8
T1. kg19, thecrackerjack, importfromil: 49-18
4. whfan202: 48-18
T5. amped0808, Capcon: 48-19
7. ash22themagnificent: 44-21
8. badgers5719: 14-7

Weirder things have happened, (such as having a 3-way tie at the top through week 8 and 6 people within a game of the top), but at this point ash22themagnificent is probably out of contention. Also out is badgers5719 for insufficient games picked - but don't go away, we still want to see your picks and commentary! I have checked and re-checked standings and think they're accurate; if anyone thinks there's an error, please explain it by about Wednesday so I can look into it - otherwise, those are the official standings going into the end of the season.

Schedule for Week 9
NORTH: Poynette (0-4, 3-5) at Lakeside Lutheran (2-2, 4-4)
NORTH: Luther Prep (1-3, 2-6) at Columbus (4-0, 8-0)
NORTH: Lake Mills (2-2, 5-3) at Lodi (3-1, 7-1)
SOUTH: New Glarus/Monticello (3-0, 5-3) at Cambridge (0-3, 3-5)
SOUTH: Belleville (1-2, 5-3) at Marshall (1-2, 2-6)
SOUTH NC: Waterloo (4-4) vs. Kewaunee (4-4) at Appleton East
8-MAN: Wisconsin Heights (6-2) at Sevastopol (6-2)

Comments:
1. Lakeside Lutheran qualifies with a win vs. Poynette
2. Lake Mills qualifies with a win vs. Lodi
3. The winner of Belleville-Marshall gets into the playoffs as an at-large team; the loser is eliminated.

Wow Week 9. As you will see I edited this. I only can catch Cracker if I change a pick or to and go for an upset so I will in good fun
Poynette @ Lakeside: I think Poynette will have the ability to keep this close. But Lakeside has to much to play for and gets it done big. Lakeside by 20 +. If Poynette would pull an upset here it could determine if Columbus is D4 or D5

Luther Prep @ Columbus: In talking to a few people they all have been surprised with how well Prep has played. Won't be enough here Columbus with a running clock and first conference title since 2004 and they will secure a #1 seed. Then they play the waiting game to see what division they will be in. I think they will stay in D4.

Lake Mills @ Lodi This could be a decent game. Lodi did not play well last week and I expect them to go into the playoffs with a good performance. Lodi by 28. Here again if Lake Mills pulls off the upset and gets in it could affect what division Columbus is in.

NGM @ Cambridge: NGM will win big here Cambridge is looking for basketball to start. NGM by 31.

Belleville @ Marshall: Winner is in. Who would of said that about Marshall 2 weeks ago. Personally I think it is a little sad that a team with 2 conference wins can get in the playoffs. But that is the way it is. I still think Belleville will win this game Belleville by 19. If Marshall pulls it off it will as well affect division placements.

Waterloo @ Kewaunee Match up of two 4 - 4 teams. Well I am changing to Waterloo Road warriors by 3

I will take Heights

I really want to pick Lake Mills but just can't do it. They just don't play defense.

Again, unsure how I'm a half game out. Either way, it's WH @ Sevastopol for the Great 8 crossover, North sites host.

Poynette vs. Lakeside Lutheran - If you had bet me money before the season started (even before conference play started) that Poynette would go winless in conference play, I'd have bet the farm against it ... but is there any reason to think they'll win now? Lakeside has improved since opening 0-2; it's going to take something unexpected to keep them from making the playoffs. Warriors by 20.

Luther Prep at Columbus - short and simple: Cardinals complete the undefeated regular season for the first time since 2004. Only question is whether they play in D4 or D5 for the postseason. Cardinals by 36.

Lake Mills at Lodi - I want to put together an argument for how Ben Dunkleberger drags the L-Cats to a win and a playoff spot, but after the L-Cats ran for -25 yards against Columbus I can't. That said, the Blue Devils have shown a penchant for really laboring to win games; I won't be surprised if it happens again this week. Blue Devils by 6.

New Glarus/Monticello at Cambridge - for the first time since they got assigned to the Capitol South the Glarner Knights will wrap up an undefeated conference season. Glarner Knights by 18.

Belleville at Marshall - Game of the Week, because the winner is into the playoffs and the loser is out. On paper, these two teams appear even. My normal pick here would be Marshall by 3; however, I tagged Belleville to make the playoffs and I can't bring myself to back off of that. Wildcats by 4.

Waterloo vs. Kewaunee - Kewaunee hasn't put up any particularly impressive wins, but then again neither has Waterloo. On the other hand, the Pirates haven't been blown out in any game; the Storm have a couple of those on the season. And, it's a neutral site game so there's no true home team - so that rule is out. Gah. Storm by 1.

Wisconsin Heights at Sevastopol - there is a common opponent in NEW Lutheran; the Vanguards won 34-20 at home, the Pioneers won 26-20 at home. It's all about one question: "can Heights stop Hunter Ebel and Ethan Kroll?" If yes, they'll win; if not, ... Pioneers by 6.

Damn it, I screwed that up again. I'll go fix shortly.

Was trying to figure out what you meant by this, but then I finally figured it out. Again, fixing shortly.

Revised standings - which should be accurate because I went and created a spreadsheet and logged everyone's picks in it.

1. thecrackerjack: 48-18
T2. kg19: 47-19
T2. capcon: 47-19
T4. amped0808: 46-20
T4. importfromil: 46-20
6. whfan202: 45-21
7. ash22themagnificent: 43-21 (ash missed 2 picks: Week 1, Cambridge/Brookfield Academy and Week 2, Cambridge/Deerfield)
8. badgers5719: 14-7

So not as close as it originally appeared - but still pretty damn close considering history. Everyone should be proud of themselves. Take a look, you all have until 7pm tomorrow night to ask questions or the standings will be considered final and I will not go recalculate. (I will, however, keep this file so I can use it in the future.)

The results as I have them:

-- Poynette 44, Lakeside Lutheran 28. The Pumas salvage a win out of conference play and crush the playoff hopes of the Warriors.
-- Columbus 42, Luther Prep 0. Columbus finishes 9-0 for the first time since 2004 and land in D5 for the postseason.
-- Lake Mills 35, Lodi 28. The L-Cats get a pick-6 with 40 seconds left to snatch an unlikely win and playoff spot.
-- New Glarus/Monticello 35, Cambridge 7. The Glarner Knights close out an undefeated conference slate.
-- Marshall 40, Belleville 13. In a "do or die" game, the Cardinals rally from 1-6 to climb into the playoffs.
-- Kewaunee 35, Waterloo 21. The Pirates get ready for the postseason in a loaded D6 field.
-- Heights 44, Sevastopol 27. Or something like that. Heights won, I know that.

Final pick 'em standings and the playoffs coming up!
