Current picks:

-- Waterloo at Wisconsin Dells: It's not been the start the Pirates have hoped for. It's the start a lot of people expected from the Chiefs, though - and it's likely to continue. Pirates by 20.
-- Adams-Friendship at Luther Prep: If not for a FG by the Phoenix, they might still be playing Waterloo. That doesn't bode well against a squad that looked to be on the way to a running clock last week and might well be a matchup next week from going undefeated. Green Devils by 36.
-- Cambridge at Nekoosa: I still think it's going to be a long season for the Bluejays - though if Riley Olson and Spencer DeForest continue to perform like they did last week, I'll have to reconsider quickly. I might be overrating the losses to solid teams in Onalaska and River Valley, but I'll put a little more weight on the hosts here. Papermakers by 2.
-- Columbus at Belleville: I'm not surprised the Wildcats started the season 2-0. I'll be shocked if they get to 3-0, though. Expect the points to get piled up in this one. Cardinals by 30.
-- Lake Mills at Darlington: Credit to the L-Cats for finding a tough non-conference opponent. If they can keep this from getting to a running clock, that would be huge - but I don't expect that to happen. Redbirds by 42.
-- Mauston at Lakeside Lutheran: This has the makings of a pretty decent game. I'm a little surprised the Golden Eagles lost to Laconia after knocking off Tomah; I'm not surprised the Warriors are 1-1 at this point. Golden Eagles by 10.
-- Poynette at Marshall: Last week's half-thrashing at home doesn't bode well for the Pumas. Or, do the Cardinals just look especially good after half-drubbing a historically weak Parkview squad? Or, is the answer for both somewhere in-between? Cardinals by 4.
-- New Glarus/Monticello at Wautoma: Remember when the Hornets were considered one of the top teams in D4? That was just 2 years ago - but it seems much longer. Glarner Knights by 32.
-- Westfield at Lodi: Maybe the Pioneers can ask to play the JV team instead. Even then, it might be ugly - but it would be a lot closer than it will be this week. Blue Devils by 45.

Waterloo @ Wisconsin Dells: Not sure about this one. Neither team has shown much of anything. I will go Waterloo by 1.
AF @ WLP:Green Devils by 31.
Cambridge @ Nekoosa: I am still not a buyer in Cambridge. Nekoosa by 7.
Columbus @ Belleville: Belleville to 3 - 0 here. Not happening. Columbus with a running clock.
LM @ Darlington: This is an interesting game. LM will keep it close but I think Darlington will pull away late. Redbirds by 16.
Mauston @ LL: I will take the home team here in a close one LL by 2
Poynette @ Marshall: I think Poynette will be able to run the ball, but it won't be enough. Marshall by 6
NG @ Wautoma: NG by 32
Westfield @ Lodi: Lodi with a running clock.

Waterloo at Wisconsin Dells - Dells has struggled, so has Waterloo. What gives here? I'm going to take Loo, at least they managed to score more against a Trailways opponent.

Adams-Friendship at Watertown Luther Prep - Luther Prep did get the win in a game where both teams clearly struggled to score. AF beat a strong Poynette team, athought it was an abbreviated game. More offensive fireworks from the SCC favorites, another week for Prep to search for a fix before conference starts.

Cambridge at Nekoosa - EDIT: Changing pick based on what ash told me about the Papermakers. Looks to me the Blue Jays can feast on leaky defenses.

Columbus at Belleville - I give Belleville credit, they've played well to start the year and really appear to be a team that can turn heads in the South, but Columbus is on a whole other level program wise. Columbus is a top team in D4 and have beaten their first two opponents handily. Belleville has my respect, but they aren't beating Columbus here.

Lake Mills at Darlington - Ooooo, this should be a great game. New matchup for Lake Mills, and a strong one if that as well. Darlington is predicated on the wing-T and run the football as well as any team in the state of Wisconsin over the last few seasons. Team will rely heavily on University of Wisconsin walk-on recruit Hunter Johnson to carry the load offensively and I think Lake Mills doesn't have the defensive ability to contain him, let alone the entire run game. Dunkleberger is a great RB in his own right, but I can't see LM coming away with this one.

Mauston at Lakeside - Lakeside will win here. May have been wrong against Elkhorn, but I know better than to pick against them this time.

Poynette at Marshall - Egad, is Marshall...... down? Their loss came to a team that should finish just behind Poynette in blowout fashion, and the win didn't say much, Parkview won't be winning much even in their new conference to start off. Poynette destroyed SCC bottomfeeder Westfield before being humbled in the shortened game against Adams-Friendship. I don't think Poynette, as mentioned above would have come back even with a full game, but I think this is a very winnable game for Poynette here if they stay disciplined and can hold on to the football.

NGM
at Wautoma - Unsure on Wautoma, but what I do know is tha NGM is solid, but obviously didn't have it in them to beat Lake Mills. Can they win in Wautoma? Seems likely. I don't have confidence in this pick either way, so I'm taking NG just so the Capitol can get a little respect.

Westfield at Lodi - Lodi has scored already. The Blue Devils may not have the same expectations of Madison as they did a year ago, but they're still relevant and are still one of the best teams in the North this year. Westfield has been obliterated by an opponent Lodi will finish ahead of, so naturually, Lodi will win easily.

Heights woulda had a home game this weekend. It figures. I get home from vacation on Wednesday. [:'(]

Cambridge at Nekoosa - Not sure what to say on Nekoosa, they did play a pretty good River Valley team tough, but they're 0-2. Cambridge is 1-1 and at least played respectably against USM, and beat Deerfield in a rivalry game. I'm going to actually buck what could be a common pick, and take Nekoosa. The long trip to Nekoosa could be adverse, or it could be beneficial, but I'm thinking that Nekoosa is ripe to knock Cambridge off.

I watched Nekoosa go up against RV last week in Spring Green and outside of the game's opening drive which the Papermakers scored their only points of the game in a four play drive (two of which were big plays through the air), then struggled the rest of the night on offense. The Blackhawks once they got momentum going in their favor, they shredded Nekoosa's defense. Once the game was over, I'll give the fans, players, and coaches a lot of credit and respect for staying when school officials handed out jerseys to the Solomon family in a presentation ceremony.

Thanks for bringing them up. I panicked and thought I had missed their game for this week. (Well, I did - because I didn't even bother looking for them.) However, they don't play this week - the next game is at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah ... so we're all good. []

Waterloo (0-2) at Wisconsin Dells (0-2) (Thursday Night): Uh Loo is not as bad as the Dells are?

Adams-Friendship (2-0) at Luther Prep (1-1): Nice win for Prep. However they need more that 3 points to stop A-F here.

Cambridge at Nekoosa (0-2): Kinda hard to gauge where the majority of the South Central teams are at this point.

Columbus (2-0) at Belleville (2-0): Columbus isn't the team that is going to get upset by Belleville.

Lake Mills (2-0) at Darlington (2-0): Cardinals have already scored.

Mauston (1-1) at Lakeside Lutheran (1-1): Toss up. Lakeside should've beaten a meh Elkhorn team.

Poynette (1-1) at Marshall (1-1): Toss up part duex.

New Glarus/Monticello (1-1) at Wautoma (0-2): Wautoma faced two solid opponents.

Westfield (0-2) at Lodi (2-0): Westfield may not win this year.

Nekoosa dropped Cambridge 34-14.

Couple additional thoughts:

-- Poynette and Marshall. Somehow appropriate they played each other last night, because I have no idea what to make of either one.
-- Lakeside was up 20-0 against Mauston and let it get away in the 2nd half.
-- Even after getting drubbed by Darlington, Lake Mills looks like the 3rd best team in the North.
-- It would not surprise me at all if everyone in the South finished 2-2 and the North only got 2 teams into the playoffs again - and I think it's pretty clear the North is much stronger than the South again.
-- Lodi at Columbus in 2 weeks. Get there early; it's going to be packed and it's probably going to be a 48-minute war.

All results except for Cambridge-Nekoosa are in.

Poynette 14, Marshall 8

Mauston 24, Lakeside 20

Adams-Friendship 26, Watertown Luther Prep 14

Lodi 38, Westfield 8

Wautoma 41, NGM 20

Columbus 56, Belleville 18

Darlington 56, Lake Mills 12

Few takeaways

The South seems wide open this year.

North does too after Columbus, methinks.

Wasn't expecting LM to get beat down that bad, but that's how it goes.

WLP stuck with AF, credit's due. I expected a running clock there.

NGM may have been inflated by that win, and as amped said a while back, maybe because BCC is down too.
