We always hear a lot about programs like Brookfield Central, Milwaukee King, and Germantown. They deserve all of the attention that they receive. Mark Adams is one of the best coaches in the state and I hope they can get to state this year. King and Germantown reload every season and challenge every year for state. One coach and program that is under the radar is the Wolverines . Coach Mickey Mala consistently puts his players in a position to win. They don't always have the overall talent that other teams have, but they find ways to win by defending and taking care of the ball. His players like Brookfield Central have the self-discipline and drive to succeed. If you put Coach Mala at a Racine Case or a talented MPS school they will contend for state every season. I have watched several Waterford practices. They are intense and his kids are taught how to defend as team and share the ball on offense. He is doing one of his best coaching jobs this season with one starter out of the lineup and a inexperienced team that has the fire and will to win. Just recently they had an impressive win over a well-coached Burlington team. Keep your eyes on the Wolverines because they have the confidence now to make a run at Wilmot for southern lakes recognition.[]

I do congratulate Waterford and their performance to date. Undoubtedly they will contend for the Southern Lakes conference championship.

I do think though you are over-looking some other facts. Waterford is 6-2 in conference but just 7-6 overall. A 1-4 non-conference record with its one win against a division 5 school that is one-sixth its size. BCC is a good small school squad but Waterford's losses to Muskego (4-11), Milton (7-8), Greenfield (4-10) and Waukesha North (7-8) with games yet to come against Milwaukee Lutheran (9-4), Mukwonago (11-5) and Hartford (7-6) do not bode well for Waterford.

Bottom line is the Southern Lakes really is not that good. Of the 8 teans in the conference only 3 have winning non-conference records with only Union Grove and Wilmot establishing themselves decisively.

The main thesis of your thread remain true ... Mala puts a comeptitive team on the court year-in and year-out.

You make some good pts. regarding Waterford's non-conference record. The same can be said about the southeast conference. Other than Racine Case the non-conference wins aren't there for the other teams in the conference. Horlick looks like they are improving. Watch out for the senior point guard Harville. He is really stepping up the last two games for them. Very quick to the basket off the dribble. It is too bad that Trevon Bunch made the poor decision of leaving for prep school. He is now back in Racine not being able to play his senior year. It is ashame that more kids aren't listening to the guidance that their high school coaches can offer to them.
