Wisconsin  77
at Xavier 68

Final Score

Badgers led by 20 pts with 4:57 remaining in the game.  From that point on, with the starters on the floor, UW did their best  to give this game away.  P-poor free-throw shooting especially, allowed Xavier to get back in the game.

With about 35 seconds remaining in the contest, leading by 6, UW caught a break on a made trey by Xavier, when an illegal pick was called on the Musketeers. The 3-pointer was waved off and Bucky was awarded possession.

On a more positive note,  Ethan Happ finished with 30 pts, 13 rebounds and 5 assists.  D'Mitri Trice tossed in a career-high 22 for the Badgers, including 5 for 5 on 3-pointers.  And, sophomore guard Brad Davison contributed 19 points, going 4 of 6 on treys.

Bucky shot 50% (31 of 62) from the floor, 56.3% (9 of 16) from outside the arc, but only 46.2% (6 of 13) from the FT line.  UW out-rebounded the Musketeers 40-32, including 12 offensive boards.

Big win on the road for Wisconsin against a perennially tough team in a tough place to play.  Xavier had not lost a non-conference home game since 2012.

There are certainly a lot of things to work on for this team, but overall, this was a pretty good win.  If they shoot the ball like they did tonight all season long, they will be just fine.  I am not too worried about the end.  If we get to February and we are still struggling closing games out, then it will be time to worry.  I don't see Reuvers going many games without scoring like tonight.  Trice is not going to score 20 a game, but he is capable of getting 14.  I liked the effort on the offensive boards and that made a huge difference.  This team looked stronger physically and built more to compete in the Big 10.  The trip to the Bahama's will tell us a lot about this team.  But if tonight was an indication, a return back to the NCAA tourney looks to be likely.

Apparently when Trice shoots too much, he makes too much, too.

Trice & Davisson make for quite the guard combo for Bucky.  Add in Kobe King & Brevin Pritzl off the bench and UW has some nice depth at the point guard and shooting guard positions.

What a difference "being healthy" makes !

good victory, something to build on. but other players need to be counted on to score. luckily we had some good shot-making from the top 3.

Trice is absolutely terrible. A midget who can't shoot & can't defend. Oh wait...

I do remain completely befuddled by how bad of a FT shooting program this has become the last several seasons. There's usually one guy who's nearly automatic and everyone else hovers around 60%.

If Bucky doesn't clean up his act on the FT-line quickly, it is going to cost this team a handful of game during the season.  I'm baffled also, DB.  Their best FT shooters, Trice, Davisson & Pritzl, don't penetrate often enough  to draw fouls.  Meanwhile, Happ was supposed to have improved his FT shooting during the off-season.  However, he still makes Nigel Hayes look like a FT whiz,  and, in doing so, probably costs himself 3-5 pts per game because of his challenges at the charity stripe.

His form does look better this year, but that hasn't paid off through the first two games.

Well, Happ was 4-4 from the FT line in the season opener....  The "eye test" seemed to show that his form improved, and the results were there.

Then he proceeds to go 0-4 against Xavier and while the "eye test" still showed better form, the results weren't there.

If Happ can shoot 60-70% from the FT line this year I would take it.  Had he made one of his four attempts against Xavier, he would be right there.  It's a small sample size so far this season, so I'm holding out hope that the stats at then end of the year back up what the "eye test" has shown so far through two games.

like any game, there are 50-100 opportunities to affect the game. ft shooting is one. but you also need to look at the whole game from tip to final seconds. Happ does many things to affect the game. ft are one part. same thing with the other guys on the team, why 2-3 star can compete against higher rated players.
