Arenas strains groin in practice, out of worlds

[link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3540]
[/link][link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3540]Gilbert Arenas[/link] suffered a groin strain during Team USA's practice on Monday and will not play in the FIBA World Championships, USA Basketball announced.

Arenas, of the [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=was]Washington Wizards[/link], strained his groin Monday morning during a practice outside of Seoul.

"We know Gilbert is really disappointed, he's done a great job. It's an unfortunate situation but he is not going to be able to continue on," managing director Jerry Colangelo said. "We're concerned because he has had a history regarding groin pulls. This is a precautionary move but it is important that he return home and get treatment."

Arenas' departure leaves 13 players competing for 12 spots on the roster for the World Championships, which start Aug. 19 in Sapporo, Japan. His absence will likely ease the competition at point guard and could open the door for a player who might have been in danger of being cut for the tournament.

The 13 remaining finalists contending for the roster include: [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3706]Carmelo Anthony[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3516]Shane Battier[/link] [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3707]Chris Bosh[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3167]Bruce Bowen[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3324]Elton Brand[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3710]Kirk Hinrich[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3818]Dwight Howard[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3704]LeBron James[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3247]Antawn Jamison[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3520]Joe Johnson[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3305]Brad Miller[/link], [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3930]Chris Paul[/link] and [link=http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=3708]Dwyane Wade[/link]. Arenas played in all four of the team's pre-tournament tune-up games. He started once, averaging 3.8 ppg., 2.3 rpg. and 11.0 minutes per game.

one less person to cut....cut Jamison, keep Bowen for his defense. The Manu stopper.

Oh my god can we please shut up about this Bruce Bowen crap? The guy is a BUM!!! The USA would be STUPID to keep him on just for the reason of guarding Ginobili. It's freaking Manu for crying out loud, the guy is a greaseball who plays as eratic as any player in the world. He'll play good one game and then play like an idiot the next time out. He is not good enough to waste a roster spot on our team for defensive purposes, we have plenty of guys who are athletic enough to match up just fine with Manu. Teams are going to sag off the USA on defense as it is when the World Championships start and when if they put Bowen in, that'll just allow them to sag off even more and plug up the lane to cut off guys from driving. If Wade is the best player in the NBA god that everybody talks him up to be, let him man up and defend Ginobili. It's time to put up or shut up.

Whoa, where'd the Wadehaterade come from? That was from left field. Anyways, who else would you keep MBC? You really think Jamison and Battier are better to have in than Bowen would be? Jamison and Battier look so incredibly lost in Team USA's fast paced offense. I don't know, I guess it's going to just go either way, kind of a lost argument....then again, to support your argument, MBC, Darko Milicic torched Manu and the entire Argentenia team....[]

why are you always trying to make things into something that they're not?

Jamison and Battier might look a little lost but at least they are playing. Bowen is sitting on the bench all game long where he belongs. He is quite possibly the most overrated player I have ever seen when it comes to how much acclaim somebody gets for a specific skill. He is really not all that spectacular of a defender, he's just always played on good teams that have had good defenders on them all the way around. Pure scorers (Kobe, Wade, Dirk) can light Bowen up and they've done it before.

I would much rather keep guys like Jamison and Battier on the team over Bowen because they can contribute so much more to the team rather than just one thing. I also wasn't trying to hate on Wade, but I think if people are going to jump on his bandwagon or LeBron's bandwagon as being the best overall player in the NBA, then surely they should be up to the challenge of defending a guy like Manu Ginobili. There are two guys right there on the team already that should be able to step up to the task of guarding Manu.

just because everyone jumps on his bandwagon, doesn't mean we can all tell him he has to Defend good now... you can't blame Wade for everyone thinking he's awesome
