I know there has been discussion of this before, but this situation is about to heat up until October 31st, the last day to sign contract extensions until next summer. Reportedly, Bynum wants max money, in the range of $15-$16 million a year, I believe. I'm not sure on exact numbers because I don't know the exact amount for a max deal, but it's a lot especially for an unproven center, minus a few game stretch last February with bad knees already at 20 years old. This all comes within a week of Bynum saying he hates coming off the bench and expects to start. This is going to cause some serious concerns for the Lakers throughout the season if this situation doesn't get fixed. Here's what Lee, Bynum's agent said last week:

"We shall see," said David Lee, Bynum's New York-based agent. "I'm not particularly optimistic, but you never know. We've had some very, very, very brief conversations. ... If it doesn't happen by Oct. 31, there will be consequences."

Some big words from Bynum's agent right there. Consequences? Does this mean something along the lines of Bynum signing elsewhere next summer? If the Lakers did this there would be some serious reprocussions. They would then have 4 players making $14 million a year or more plus Radmanovic, Fisher, Walton and Vujacic making $4 million a year or more for at least 2 more seasons. They would then have to fill the rest of their bench with players signing the league or veteran's minimum and wouldn't have the opportunity to re-sign Trevor Ariza (no bird rights) or Jordan Farmar (unless they wanted to pay a HUGE luxury tax, like twice what the Knicks are paying).

Here's my suggestion- Jerry West needs to tell Bynum's agent to F off and wait because he WILL get his max money, more money and years than any other team can offer IF Bynum can come through this season and warrant that kind of money. If that shuts him up, they need to start working the phones. If I'm LA, I work on a salary dump of Lamar Odom. They need a more conventional 3 anyway and some team could take on his contract and could use him. I'd offer Lamar Odom for Wally Szczerbiak straight up. Wally's $13 million contract expires after this season and would make a much better fit for LA in their starting lineup. Sure he's not a great defender, but he spreads the floor for the starters and during defensive stretches, Trevor Ariza can come in and pick up the slack. Then next summer, they either let Wally walk or offer him a much smaller contract and work on free agency and re-signings from there. Shawn Marion for Lamar Odom + change works too, but I doubt Miami takes that deal since it would put them right back in the same situation with Beasley. Worst case scenario...Bynum demands a trade and they have to find a suitor for him who's willing to give him max money (Chicago, Memphis, Miami?)

This is absurd. Salary dump or not, the last thing the Lakers need is a shooter who doesn't play any defense. Bynum's contract situation will get figure out, the Lakers will re-sign him. If Odom gets moved, which I doubt would happen until at least January or February, it is going to be for a defensive minded small forward. As of right now Odom is coming off the bench for either Pau or Bynum, and I really think he could thrive in this role as 6th man.

I just remembered that Odom's contract is up after this season so they wouldn't need to dump his salary since he's not locked in long term.

Other options to trade Odom for: Gerald Wallace (Lakers would have to give more to get him), Andres Nocioni, Josh Howard (although after his off-season I doubt he's an option now), Tayshaun Prince (would be an excellent fit but would only get the chance to trade for him if the Pistons blow the beginning of the season), Stephen Jackson, Andrei Kirilenko....

Either that, or just let him play 6th man and let his contract expire and hope Trevor Ariza a) doesn't ask for too big of money and b) excels into a starting role as a defensive specialist.

Bynum wants $17 million per season!!! That's more than Dirk, Paul Pierce, Amare Stoudemire, Yao Ming even more than his counterpart Pau Gasol.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA the Lakers would have to be profoundly retarded to fork out $17M per to this kid. Apparently this kid was misdiagnosed this past January because it seems to me that he dislocated his brainstem and not his kneecap. I can't understand this logic. The Lakers RAN through the West last year and made the Finals without you, idiot. If this kid doesn't "get it" soon, Kobe might have to exercise some of that Mamba GM influence and get him traded.

Speaking of Kobe, he left their preseason game tonight with a hyperextended knee. More than likely nothing, but you never know, and a knee injury can really hurt someone who relies on explosiveness, which Kobe still does quite a bit.

He knows how to play & play effectively when hurt. It'll take more than this Mickey Mouse injury to curb the Mamba's appetite for a fourth ring.

He must be getting REALLY hungry since he hasn't eaten in a while. Maybe he just needs a Snaq.

Why, why, why poke the sleeping bear? See, you bringing up the Shaq-Kobe thing once is an excuse for MBC to bring it up like 8 times. Please, don't start this til after Christmas, at least.

Ohhh, MBC, that one's got to sting worse than blowing a 24 point lead in a crucial Game 4. Ahh I missed this.
