Former MLB player, broadcaster Mike Hegan dies at 71
AP 10:29 p.m. EST December 25, 2013

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Mike Hegan, the former major league player who was a longtime broadcaster with the Cleveland Indians, has died. He was 71.

The Indians say Hegan had his family by his side when he died Wednesday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. No other details were provided by the team.

Hegan was a radio and TV broadcaster for the Indians for 23 years. He retired after the 2011 season. He also spent 12 seasons as a broadcaster with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The son of former Indians catcher Jim Hegan made the AL All-Star team with the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and helped the Oakland Athletics win the 1972 World Series. He also played in the 1964 World Series with the New York Yankees.

Hegan hit .242 with 53 homers and 229 RBIs in 965 career games with three organizations, getting most of his time at first base and in the outfield.

Mike Hegan was a really good guy!

RIP Mike!

I used to go to Mike Hegan's Field of Dreams in New Berlin at least once a month when I played little league/high school baseball. He played before my time, but it is awesome that he left his legacy in New Berlin and around MLB.

I remember playing there myself when I was in LL ball too. Great place.

The only foul ball I ever caught at an MLB game was off the bat of Mike Hegan, during a Brewers-Twins game on a hot, steamy weeknight in in August, 1975, at the old Met Stadium in Bloomington, Mn (the current site of the Mall of America). The pitcher for the Twins was Gerry Arroyo.

It was my 1st summer out of college at UW-Eau Claire. I was living in Burnsville, working in Bloomington (my 1st job out of college). A couple freinds of mine from Eau Claire surprised me early that evening by showing up unannounced, declaring we were going to the Brewers-Twins game. Our seats at the Met were about 20 rows up, just to left of the home plate netting, down the 3rd-base line. There were 4 elderly gentlemen seated directly in front of us. In one of the later innings (7th, maybe), a high pop-foul was coming our direction off the bat of the left-handed hitting Hegan. The ball was heading into the laps of the old fellas in front of us. I had brought my baseball glove with me to the game. At the last second, I simply reached between the shoulders of 2 of the guys in front me & caught the ball in the webbing of my glove. The old fellas never flinched. They acted like nothing had happened. They didn't turn around to acknowledge my catch nor did they give me hell for reaching between them. []

After many job transfers & moves around the Midwest over the years, I still have the ball in my posession.
