For me db, the days of draft and develop have passed.  With the world of free agency, the movement of players and the ability of teams to improve happen at a much quicker rate.  The trick is that once you get to a playoff level, to stay there.  And that happens by having to fill holes on teams through both free agency and the draft.  There were examples all over last night of drafting for immediate help.  San Fran.  They trade Buckner and lose Sanders.  What do they do??  Fill those holes.  Will those they plug in be as good as what they lost??  No ones knows, but they did not draft for years down the road.  The Vikings did the same thing.  I disagree on Queen, but part of it will be the system he will be in with Ravens.  That guy will be a tackling machine for them and will start from day 1.

Part of all of this is expectation.  The shelf life for players/coaches in the NFL is short.  Not so much for GM's.  MLF better not see a couple of .500 seasons in a row or he will be on a hot seat and not see Jordan Love as the QB for the Packers.  Packer fans are not going to be patient and with another HOF QB winding his career down, not addressing the holes of this team with an immediate contributor in the 1st round for two years in a row has not went over well with fans.

Throwing these names out there as an example - if they picked Queen last night and then followed with WR KJ Hamler and DL James Lynch tonight - can anyone argue this team would be in worse position than they were when the 49ers shredded this team this year??  As things stand now, adding Jordan Love sure hasn't made this team better for next year.

Does anyone have figures on season accolades won by rookies and what the percentage is? The amount of high WAR (to steal a baseball term) rookies in the NFL can't be very large.

When I say develop, I'm mostly referring to the concept of anybody and everybody getting better year over year...i.e. guys taking that proverbial next step. The Packers have a few guys that could be those guys. A couple of them are at positions of need.

The thing that stinks is this lost off-season. How is that gonna affect things?

And will it matter? We might have another draft before they play another game at the rate things are going.

You are right that we may not see the Packers come September.  I just hate to see the continuous hope of draft and develop and hope that guys make a difference in year three.  Totally get that no one expects that each year you have to depend on rookies to be difference makers, but, you have to get contributions from your first couple picks.  Look at last years 1st round, you can say that 26 of the 32 picks were solid contributors for their teams.  That includes Darnell Savage - but not Rashan Gary.  Coulda, shoulda, woulda - but a number of guys picked after Gary way outperformed him.  Can't cry over spilled milk now, but getting both first rounders last year on the field would have been nice.

Funny enough Gary was taken from a position of need that had been addressed otherwise.

That said, I am not a player personnel guy (and have never even played Fantasy Football), but this next pick is a headscratcher from any angle (unless that angle is the apparently uber-pressing "will Jamaal Williams be on the roster next year question?).

A pick from a need position. Seems like an intangibles and versatility guy perhaps in the vein of Richard Rodgers, ironically another TE many thought was drafted higher than graded out.

What's clear to me is Green Bay has a lot of faith in Jace Sternberger and on the receiver front, both MVS and ESB (damn Canadian fields). I buy that the talent is there (particularly MVS who has flashed at times), but this is a crucial year for all three with the WRs fighting for a future.

I seem to be the contrarian Packers fan a lot of the time, and I thought they should have held onto Jimmy Graham for the final year of his deal. I stand by that.

You never can truly grade a draft until three or four years out, but from an optical standpoint, there's certainly a lot of confusion and headscratching going on right now.

When your selection of a QB in Round 1 is the only pick that somewhat computes...and your bulldozing Round 2 selection will be the only likely contributor this year...

What is that?  6 of the 7 best QBs in the NFL right now?   There is a reason no one is paying you to give input on a draft.

Based on the draft grade of the Packers, maybe I should apply.

The Saints didn't draft Brees and there are several recent SB QB's playing with teams other than who drafted them.  Jimmy G, P Manning, Foles.

I would acquire QB's via trades and FA. Unless I had a top pick.

What is a draft grade the day after the draft though? We have no clue how any of these guys will pan out. Gutekunst and Co. and have little to no clue how they're going to pan out. Anyone grading a draft needs to, at minimum, give it a year. Better yet 2-3 years.

I get it. I'm not trying to be a buzzkill. We like to talk about sports and rank performances. It's natural but I find draft grades, especially this early, to be a bit silly.

So, a day after Rodgers sang his praises, the Packers part ways with Jake Kumerow on cutdown day.

I'm sure this'll sit well with the media and fanbase.

A thin receiving corps gets thinner, unless an unexpected big move is in the works?
