Brown Deer at Pius XI - BD is in rough shape at the minute. Not sure how the move to the Metro Classic is gonna work for them at this point, though they should have a few more chances for results. The beat (whatever that may be) goes on for Pius.

Whitnall at Greendale - The Woodland Conference championship any way you slice it. There's a part of me that wants to say Whitnall shocks all behind a Valcarcel performance for the ages, but the gap between the West and East is quite large and Greendale has developed a big of a rushing attack themselves. Does this get to a running clock, sadly, might be the only question here?

Friday, 10/18

South Milwaukee at New Berlin West - Reality hits for the Rockets as their season is likely bookended with big shutout losses...with a coda forthcoming next week. Does NBW have enough to win in Level 1 this year? I'm not sure. They had no business losing last year to East Troy and still did.

Greenfield at New Berlin Eisenhower - Is change coming again at Greenfield? I just don't know if they can keep going like this. The only guy walking back through that door may be Murphy mainly because he never leaves. To not make the playoffs, in the East, with this squad is rather unfathomable. IKE supposedly will be back at full strength. This won't be pretty. The seeding meeting with IKE, G'Dale and NBW is gonna be interesting. Would love to be a fly on the wall there.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Pewaukee - Lousy season for the Red Knights. Pewaukee has rebounded nicely from early stumbles and will be hoping to get a playoff draw similar to last year's.

Cudahy at Wisconsin Lutheran - Playoffs are on the line in one of the few crossovers with any intrigue. WISCO inexplicably lost one of these and missed out of the playoffs a few years ago, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility, though what I saw of Cudahy wasn't very good and doesn't exactly give me confidence that they will surprise here.

Shorewood/Messmer at West Allis Central - WAC would have been better suited to draw Brown Deer as I think they had a better shot there. Shorewood/Messmer has improved week-to-week and should be back in the playoff picture (it is the East after all) next year. For WAC, here's hoping they schedule non-cons next year wisely.

Game of Note

Racine Park at Kenosha Bradford - An offensively challenged team is what Park needed to see in their playoff quest, but unfortunately it's also a team with a fairly good defense. The winner likely gets in, the loser goes home, meaning the stakes are high, which team answers that bell first may be the winner. The notion of neither team scoring 20 and a big play deciding it sounds good to me, and Park has more of a threat in that regard.

Brown Deer at Pius XI - As I had stated before, Pius wasn't among the worst of the bad teams; they were young and inexperienced, but had kids that could become players. They're not here yet though. The more experienced falcons muster up to take down the popes.

Whitnall at Greendale - While it is tempting to compare games against their only common opponent, don't be fooled; when Whitnall and Wisco squared off, Valcarcel was not in the line-up, while Wisco was significantly banged up by the time they got to Gavinski Stadium. I expect all the stops to be pulled by both sides for this game. I expect some big runs and lots of scores. GD school district riled up some residents when they said that they would no longer allow firework displays on school grounds...well, somehow they mustered up enough gumption to allow this game.

South Milwaukee at New Berlin West - NBW wants some ammo to take with them to the seed meeting. They'll muster some here.

Greenfield at New Berlin Eisenhower - In a rematch featuring the return of more than a few seniors, NBE will have little resistance. GF started with higher hopes, but after last week's game, I feel it will be tough to muster up a last hurrah.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Pewaukee - When I saw ML, they mustered periods of strong resistance; Greendale tried to establish the run early, but struggled. They have strength and speed around the field. I just don't see it as being enough to win here.

Cudahy at Wisconsin Lutheran - Wisco is limping. While I think even stricken Wisco squad can corral a victory like a muster of peacocks, don't be surprised if the outcome is closer than expected.

Shorewood/Messmer at West Allis Central - For fans that muster up and sit in the stands for this one, they might actually be a bit entertained. I just think S/M comes out ahead due to greater offensive capabilities.

The West will dominate the top 5 games while the bottom 2 games will be competitive. Wisco sneaks into the playoffs while Greenfield and Milwaukee Lutheran just miss out.

Brown Deer at Pius XI (6th Place) - The enrollment might say otherwise, but BD isn’t the only team in this game that should be moving to the Metro Classic... or in the case of Pius, at least the Woodland East. Seriously. Doesn’t the new WFCA model we’re moving to have rules for promotion and relegation every couple years? That would give both these teams, and countless others, some hope.

Whitnall at Greendale (1st Place) - Greendale High School is, curiously, several miles east of Whitnall High School. I’d love for the Woodland ADs to explain that one without exposing the shameless fixing this conference’s alignment, crossovers, and playoff qualification rules represent. On the field, I have to believe Greendale is strong enough in the trenches and disciplined enough on D to shut down Whitnall’s main threat.

Friday, 10/18

South Milwaukee at New Berlin West (2nd Place) - I honestly believe SM has the raw materials to win this game—IF this conference played a mixed schedule like it did in the previous format, and SM took their lumps against Greendale, Ike, Pewaukee year in and year out. Instead, we have “East” vs “West”, mediocre vs middle-class.  The Rockets haven’t played anyone all year and they’re going to pay for that here.

Greenfield at New Berlin Eisenhower (3rd Place) - Ike will roll here, half strength or full, as they pick up steam for the playoffs. If prayer were allowed in public schools, they’d be on their knees beseeching heaven that Memorial drops to D4, but the twinks over at the Freedom From Religion Foundation have made sure that isn’t an option, so I advise the good folk of New Berlin to enjoy this while they can.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Pewaukee (4th Place) - Pirates should roll here as well. Odd to say but there’s a chance the Red Lutherans would have done better in the North Shore this season.

Cudahy at Wisconsin Lutheran (5th Place) - I don’t know just how banged up Wisco is, but the words of Joe give me pause here. They remain the smart pick, but if they’re really struggling with injuries then this could be an upset special. Cudahy has everything to play for and nothing to lose by taking risks, which means play calling gets a little more daring,,, and they have the QB to capitalize on that.

Shorewood/Messmer at West Allis Central (7th Place) - Kids these days are huge and physical, but I feel like the WAC squads of the Melkamania YouTube Channel era could get together and beat either of these teams right now running that old Sobocinski Wing T. Pure sentimental pick here.

Brown Deer at Pius XI (6th Place): Pius has shown some flashes of life a bit more often than BD this season.

Whitnall at Greendale (1st Place): GDale wins this one running away.

Friday, 10/18

South Milwaukee at New Berlin West (2nd Place): Hopefully West does not shoot themselves in the foot next week.

Greenfield at New Berlin Eisenhower (3rd Place): IKE is nearly at full strength at the right time but with the mid-season incident fresh in some minds, will it translate into a high seed?

Milwaukee Lutheran at Pewaukee (4th Place): Underwhelming season for the Red Knights. Pirates have looked inconsistent for the majority of the year but at least they are playoff bound.

Cudahy at Wisconsin Lutheran (5th Place): This could be a competitive game if Cudahy plays a near-perfect game. That's a big if mind you.

Shorewood/Messmer at West Allis Central (7th Place): Uh well WAC wanna play Hale in a 10th game for City bragging rights eh?

Will do the Friday games tomorrow morning.

Week Nine Matchups

Thursday, 10/17

Brown Deer at Pius XI (6th Place) - Brown Deer is just bad.

Whitnall at Greendale (1st Place) - I have to take Greendale. Whitnall has improved a lot but are a tier or two below Greendale. Valcarcel has been outstanding, is Whitnall diverse enough on offense though? I’m not really sure what Greendale is this year. They lack a great win and have essentially been off for a month. Whitnall lost a shootout with Burlington and lost to Wisco without Valcarcel.

Greendale has not played in the conference championship game since 2015. On that night, Joe Koch walked through the door with a sophomore qb named Sam Streeter and ran his offense. Greenfield’s star rb (Banks) was too hurt to play a single snap. Despite not having their star player, Greenfield put up 35 points and won the game. Greendale threw 4 pics that night with their own sophomore qb. It was a big upset. It’s interesting to note that neither qb from that game was the full time starter at qb for the rest of their career.

Greendale has not been the same since that loss. That loss shook the program and the level of play and efficiency has declined. They still win plenty of conference games but haven’t been a factor in the playoffs and have had some ugly exits. Had Koch hung around, we know what the Woody East would have looked like and it’s fair to think they would have done well in their crossovers and won some playoff games. Covington had success before his departure. And we know it’s one fine mess there now…..

Greendale has not been shy about declaring themselves the champs this year. They fail to recognize that a tiebreaker has to be in place so the west can have a participant in the conference title game. Greendale will get an opportunity to show what they have in the playoffs. Let’s see how far they have come and how it plays out. I have already purchased my ticket for the seeding meeting for this grouping as I figure it might be more entertaining than any movie I have seen in quite some time.

In 2015 - Lost to Wilmot 39-6 in level 1. (Running Clock)
In 2016 - Lost to Plymouth 31-6 in level 1.
In 2017 they beat St Francis and Whitnall to get to level 3. Lost to Bay 21-14 in level 3. Bay was looking ahead to Ike I imagine.
In 2018 they survived a bad Wisco team 42-37 in level 1 and beat Plymouth in level 2. Ike eventually destroyed them 31-6 in level 3.

With the goofy east and west division setup, Woodland teams occupy a lot of these level 1 and 2 games so making it to level 3 is not that great of an accomplishment. I thought Greendale would perform better in the playoffs once their enrollment went down enough
to consistently be division 3. Waukesha West out muscled them the one year they went up to D2.

Joker was good.
