Brown Deer at Cudahy - Brown Deer asserted themselves last week and cruised to victory over Messwood. It's enough to make you think twice here against a disappointing (can anyone in the East be disappointing?) Cudahy Packers team. Still, Cudahy has the best player at the most important position, and that should be enough here. Should.

Greenfield at Shorewood/Messmer - Is Greenfield rotating QBs or what's the story here? Won't matter much who takes the snaps this week as this young and inexperienced Messwood team continues to take their lumps. At least there will be some intrigue on their end for the Week 9 crossover, but that's about it.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee - Coming into the season, this would have seemingly been a lock pick of Milwaukee Lutheran, and while they've been OK, they haven't been relatively spectacular. They struggled to put away Cudahy last week. That said, South Milwaukee doesn't exactly have anyone quaking in their boots, and the Red Knights may present a similar challenge to SM that Racine Park did. That didn't end well.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitnall - It had been a decent start for WISCO, expectations reduced, but not being able to hang with a depleted IKE squad was a bit of a harbinger of things to come. Differences between East and West could keep this close, but Whitnall also hung with a Burlington team suddenly looking for a top two finish in the much tougher Southern Lakes and has taken care of business to date in the Woodland, why should WISCO be any different?

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - The league is such where it's most all-around team can take a big personnel hit and still only drop off a little. The Lions have had a few weeks to adjust to the new lineup and should be in prime shape to handle a fairly average Pewaukee squad.

New Berlin West at West Allis Central - At least if they were in the East, the Bulldogs could have had some enjoyable moments. 70-0 shellackings don't really benefit anybody, let alone the state of football in the Woodland, but I digress. We talk about Valcarcel carrying the load (and playing defense too) for Whitnall, but NBW's offense has almost entirely been Adam Siegel. It's working well, but they could probably "pull a Menomonee Falls" here and still put up video game rushing numbers, sadly.

Greendale at Pius XI - There was some notion going around that Pius was improved or something. As we can see that really isn't the case, they just beat up on someone below them in the standings. Greendale completed one pass last week. When is the last time that happened? If Stoltz wanted he could throw zero times this week and still conjure up a similar result. That would probably drive him nuts though.

Game of Note

Nicolet at West Bend West - Great program W for Nicolet last week. It's definitely building over there. Unsure of the ceiling however. They take care of business here and maybe steal another in the final couple games and *gulp* playoffs would be a near-certainty.

Brown Deer at Cudahy - For teams that seem to be falling short of their own expectations, this is the time and kind of game that becomes the make/break point for a season, and perhaps next season too.

Greenfield at Shorewood/Messmer - Curious about the QB play and GF too...

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee- SM (and cudahy) have seemed to let me down when I stretch and pick them on pick 'em.I do so here again for reasons I don't fully understand myself; faith in the coaching staff perhaps?

Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitnall - I don't want to seem like I am short-changing the Whitnall team, but Valcarcel has been amazing to watch from afar; he seemingly is everywhere on the field and prominent in every play. Wisco has ways to surprise, especially if you overlook them, but unless they can find a way to bring Valcarcel back to earth, they may as well be snipe hunting.

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - I certainly seem to be picking against the wind here...Ike performed way better than expected while Pewaukee felt the pain of another let-down. But Pewaukee strikes me as a dangerous team for Ike; they are like a sleek, fast clipper whose cannons require a discipline to defend against, lest ye be caught napping in the crows nest. Ike still should have a number of relatively green faces on the field, and it takes only one lapse by Ike for the Pirates to sneak by and find buried treasure in the endzone.

New Berlin West at West Allis Central - This is a tough stretch for WAC; West now focuses on trying to keep points off the board in the first half.

Greendale at Pius XI - Greendale has to continue to work to get better; while the results were what they needed them to be, the passing game looked out of sync against WAC. Pius will look to be spoilers, not necessarily by threatening to win...but by generating offense. Greendale/West/Ike are all playing for tie-breakers.

Baun Deer at Cudahy - Love the return of Baun Deer. Sadly, it's not happening on the field. Cudahy should be able to win this one and try to build a little momentum.

Greenfield at Shorewood/Messmer - Chalk pick here is Greenfield but there won't be too many more of those for the Hawks.  Like too many teams in the East, they lack consistency and discipline.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee - I had the chance to watch a little film on the old alma mater this week and I have to say, size-wise they pass the eye test... so how does one explain the lopsided scores against teams with speed/skill? Shouldn't they at least be able to generate some offense? And what it looks like to me is that these Rockets might be big, but they lack strength in general and discipline on defense. I don't think this will be a blowout-- ML lacks the horses for it-- but I do think the Red Lutherans are more secure in what they do and who they are than SM is to this point. That should be enough.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitnall - Whitnall will win this crossover the way Wisco used to-- by running, running, and running some more on offense, and coupling that with a stout D.

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - I will take Pewaukee to do what they do best and come out on top against an undermanned opponent.  I hate to bring up the hazing/suspensions again, but personally, I keep thinking of the victims.  'Cause if it was my kid who was a victim here and the boys who did it were welcomed back for a playoff game, I'd definitely pursue action against the school district and charges against the perp.  Is Ike really allowing these kids back on the team?

New Berlin West at West Allis Central - It's beyond ridiculous that WAC has to go play in the GMC next year. This will be another ugly one and I do feel bad for the Bulldogs.

Greendale at Pius XI - Greendale will need to be more like a cross-country or swimming team here and judge their week-to-week performances not by the score, but how they execute on film compared to the previous games. Otherwise the first non-con playoff game will be an unwelcome shock to the system.

I'm not sure exactly. The kid who just dropped his lawsuit saying he didn't get due process is apparently suspended from extra-curricular activities for a period of 12 months according to the articles I've read.

It does appear that in the least some kids will return before the end of the season.

Anyone hearing the "love fest" Mike McGivern and Co. have been giving Kern and the remaining IKE kids for "overcoming adversity?" Spare me. If anything, whether he has knowledge of it or not, it happened in his program, and at the very least his spot should under more scrutiny and review.

Then again, this is the same district/school who let a head football coach resign rather than remove him from his position after nearly being brought up on charges related to an on-field incident and then getting plastered and rolling his car. 😏

DB,

You make an interesting point.

" I hate to bring up the hazing/suspensions again, but personally, I keep thinking of the victims.  'Cause if it was my kid who was a victim here and the boys who did it were welcomed back for a playoff game, I'd definitely pursue action against the school district and charges against the perp.  Is Ike really allowing these kids back on the team?"

IKE fans like Melkamania will sweep it under the rug because they know that the majority of the players(less one) involved in the hazing event will be eligible to play Week 1 of the playoffs.

The arrogance displayed here is telling....."It’s also a fact that IKE has dominated the Woodland in recent years. People know the lopsided scores and that it’s been a few years since IKE has lost a conference game. IKE has been the only Woodland team winning meaningful non conference games and beating quality playoff teams. The conference has been a punchline for many for a long time. IKE has had some wins that have gained and saved some credibility for at least the West division. I think the reason some feel comfortable blasting IKE is because their teams have come up short against IKE and are mostly irrelevant outside of the conference."

I guess we should refrain from imposing criticism of the IKE program since they've "dominated the Woodland Conference in recent years." The kids were caught committing a stupid act, and they should be banned for the full season.

Final gem from the Melkamania post...

"It’s been well documented that IKE players have been very active in helping out in the community. "

Don't all teams engage in community service?

Lan my Man, SonofDonBosco, Defensive Back #11 Why are we concentrating on 2nd place teams. Based on tie breakers my Panthers will be playing in the Conference Championship game.  Shutdown defense were in!  My third favorite team the Pirates of Pewaukee win this week and it’s a definite done deal.  Bring on Whitnall. Not a team this year has had consistent success against our defense.   Our offense will just get better with the wizard of check with me at the helm. We’ll take the 1 seed!  Thank you very much.

Week Six Matchups

Friday, 9/27

Brown Deer at Cudahy
Brown should’ve been able to squeeze out more than one win the East but I think that is all they’re going get to this season. Football has definitely been put on the back burner since Baun. New coach, new culture  new blood. Cudahy QB is as impressive as anyone I’ve seen. That’s all for the Packers.

Greenfield at Shorewood/Messmer
Greenfield is underwhelming to say the least.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee
Could turnout to be the best game in the conference this week.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitnall
Valcarcel is a D1 athlete. I have a respect for anyone that can handle 30+ carries a game. Down the line too one dimensional.

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower
Had this been another district, program and/or coach the hazing issue would’ve been a much bigger story. Kudos to New Berlin for keeping this under wraps as much they have so far. Perception is everything.

New Berlin West at West Allis Central
WAC should try to keep a coach more than a year.

That's ridiculous, agreed. The only "adversity" here was brought on internally. What gave those kids the impression that they could get away with treating other players this way? That staff and that school administration need to take a good, long look at themselves because ultimately, this problem rests on their doorstep.

Ironically, back in the late 90s, it was Cudahy that suspended some key players during the playoffs for an athletic code violation. That move cost them at least a shot at a potential state title. This was a couple years after the 1994 win over Menomonie.

It speaks to the culture. Sure, "kids do dumb things" (legit the excuse McGivern and Co. used) but that's not an excuse for behavior that society has very clearly made is no longer acceptable under any circumstance.

Litigation culture though dictates that you can't risk taking things away from "the children," though, you know. Slaps on the wrist and they still get to have their fun.

Baun Deer at Cudahy - This has the makings of a really bad game.

Greenfield
at Shorewood/Messmer - I will take Greenfield. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door. However, this team has a free ride to the playoffs. They will qualify without a single quality victory. Their next 3 games will be absolute blowouts. Welcome to the bottom half of the Woodland East. Last week was more of the usual follies from the Hawks. Rob Widuch of Whitnall had his boys prepared to play.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee

Wisconsin Lutheran at Whitnall - Wisco's glory days are such a distant memory.

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - I’ll take IKE. Pewaukee has a good back but is limited at several positions. They have lost some tight games. I expect IKE to grind out a victory, it might not be beautiful. IKE then closes the season with 2 dogs before the crossover game.

IKE continues to get criticism and a good portion of it has been earned. Some of the critics have taken it to an unneeded level though. I don’t condone some of the things we have read about or give them a pass because they have a gaudy winning percentage in recent years. I do believe that the story would have died much sooner if it was a less prominent team in either division of the Woodland. We would be naive to think that something similar hasn’t happened at any of the other 13 Woodland programs. It has happened, but this isn’t the forum for me to dive into details on any specific team. I don’t blame coaches at any school for things their athletes do, especially when it doesn’t even happen at school. The majority of the IKE roster wasn’t guilty of anything and that needs to be remembered. Some individuals are serving suspensions. We could debate until the end of time about how many games players should sit, opinions vary. It’s tough for administrators to punish actions that happen off their grounds and assess different degrees of guilt for things they didn’t see. This wasn’t a kid drinking a Pepsi in the computer lab. I’m sure some will continue to discuss this while others talk football.

Jack Osielski runs Windows 10 on his Etch-a-Sketch. He continues to get a lot of touches and moves the chains. Luka Zadrima has become a force on defense. It’s time to start guessing at possibilities for the crossover games and look at the serious playoff contenders outside of the Woodland. CMH has some injury issues at the moment and has to slug it out with a lot of high quality physical teams. Grafton got exposed by Hartford. Menasha is playing good football. Despite the fact that it’s still September, it feels like the Woodland season has already wrapped up. There are far too many uncompetitive games. A two division and 14 team conference can yield that. It could be worse if the two divisions weren’t so incredibly unbalanced.

New Berlin West at West Allis Central - How bad is WAC?

Greendale at Pius XI - Greendale easy. GD might score over 150 points in the next 3 weeks. They could probably put up 250 if they really wanted to. Their best victory at the moment is probably against NBW, do we consider that a signature win. They struggled with Pewaukee. Their strength of schedule is better than Woodland East teams but not great. The Panther faithful have become giddy as they might be part of a shared title with an asterisk by it. At some point in the playoffs GD will need to beat a team of note outside of the Woodland conference to advance. That hasn’t happened with great frequency in recent years. They might go from printing conference champion t-shirts to the realization that now they have to play somebody. Lake Geneva Badger has 1 conference win so far and they handled GD. GD has to be thankful that they will most likely dodge a Southern Lakes opponent again.

Game of Note

Nicolet at West Bend West - Why are all these garbage games ending up as game of note? CMH/Muskego a better choice?

This matter is much bigger than football. I’ve heard of hazing at the high school and collegiate level but not to this extent. This is honestly a safety issue and could be considered a criminal issue depending on the eye of the beholder. I understand the HC not knowing that this was going on if it was not brought to his attention, but to have Eisenhower officials defend this is simply ridiculous. If I’m a New Berlin parent, I’d seriously consider NBW because of the risk of my kid being spanked or sodomized. That’s definitely a form of bullying if a kid was bothered enough to tell an adult. It’s much more than football, it’s about safety and protecting these kids. But again, perception is everything clearly.
