Martin Luther at Greenfield - Minus their big back from last year, but I think GML remains a more fundamentally-sound football team and has built a winning culture across the school of late. I'd pick them to win more conference games than Greenfield if they were playing a Woodland East schedule.

West Allis Central at Racine St. Catherine's - Good warmup game for the Angels as they break in a few new key players, but otherwise reload for 2019. Another state title might be a reach, but the conference is theirs to defend.

Lake Geneva Badger at Greendale - Hard to call this one, I'm going with the bigger school from the tougher conference. It's tough to believe Badger's down year in 2018 will repeat itself.

Friday, 8/23

Lakeland at Cudahy - Is this the Lakeland way up by Minocqua? That's one heck of a bus ride. I'll take the home team.

Sheboygan Falls at Brown Deer - Would be nice to see BD have one of those big years they used to pull out of a hat every other season. Zack Baun in finishing up at UW and they haven't been good since he left, so they're due.

Whitnall at Burlington - Tenhagen and Deans are still trying to rekindle the glory of the Dalton Era they played in. Will this be their year?

Kewaskum at Milwaukee Lutheran - Sounds like the Red Lutherans might be in for their roughest year since coming down from the North Shore.

Shorewood/Messmer at Milwaukee King - King passed the eye test last year-- big, fast, strong-- but when they played teams outside the City they just couldn't keep up. If they want to surprise anyone come playoff time, they need to beat Messwood in Week One first.

Racine Park at South Milwaukee -  The Rockets need to work out some kinks in the third straight year of new schemes on either side of the ball. SM shouldn't take Park lightly.  In many, many ways, South Milwaukee is a heck of a lot closer to Racine than it is to Greendale or New Berlin.

New Berlin West at Elkhorn - These Vikings are a program on the rise.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Oak Creek - These Vikings aren't. Honestly, you have to wonder whether this "Kingdom Prep" deal is going to doom Wisco football to irrelevance... and why WELS opened a "voucher school" just a couple miles from their flagship. 😐

Milwaukee Riverside at Pewaukee - Riverside will know from their scrimmage whether they have what it takes to match up with Pewaukee or not.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Plymouth - I've spent years playing the skeptic about Ike and waiting for them to revert to their late-2000's form, but at this point they've convinced me they're here to stay.

Kenosha Tremper at Pius XI - Pius should have scheduled Thomas More. It pains me to say it, but that's probably the only way either one of those two old rivals will get a win this year. Meanwhile, all the buzz about Tremper's rebuild makes me nervous. This one should help them build their confidence for the games they'll really need it.

Martin Luther at Greenfield - ML was certainly the best team at their scrimmage on Saturday, though I'm not sure how much that means given the competition. Greenfield, from an offensive standpoint, was pretty competitive at their scrimmage. Bartlett is really dynamic, but those receivers are really good as well. Martin Luther has a chance in this game, particularly if Greenfield is their usual undisciplined self, but I just don't think in game 1 that all of ML's new playmakers will be ready to spring that upset. But again, it is Greenfield, calling them the better team in any given game is just a suggestion.😎

West Allis Central at Racine St. Catherine's - Look, everyone here knows my allegiances, but I'm not gonna mince words, this is going to be a very tough season for the Bulldogs. No surprise given what graduated and what was returning. You can get away with low upperclassmen numbers (~25 on varsity), but lack of experience and quite frankly, a lack of depth of football talent, is gonna make things difficult for Cory Thompson in his first year. All you can hope for is good attitudes and steady improvement. RSC loses quite a bit from their state championship team, but is a small-school program that is poised to just reload, and there's just enough returning to make them scary yet again.

Lake Geneva Badger at Greendale - 2019 should be kinder to the Badgers, and this game will go a long way in determining just how kind. Quite a bit of talent is gone from G'Dale, but there always seems to be more waiting in the wings. These two have had some barnburners at Greendale in the past. I don't think this one will be any exception. The Panthers get the edge being at home.

Friday, 8/23

Lakeland at Cudahy - This is actually a good barometer for this Cudahy program. They should be able to handle a middling GNC program. Lakeland isn't lacking for guys that can give teams troubles, but they are a team that often struggles when you hit them in the face. Can Cudahy conjure up a little old-time Packers football? Apparently, there will be a 25-year anniversary (geez, has it been that long already?) celebration for the 1994 state title team at this one as one of Venne's assistants from back then is on Lakeland's staff (or at least that's what I heard on the Coaches Show).

Sheboygan Falls at Brown Deer - It flew under the radar, but BD lost as much to graduation as Shorewood/Messmer and WAC, this has been close the past few years, but I think it might head back heavily in the favor of the Falcons from the Sheboygan area this time around.

Whitnall at Burlington - Whitnall may be the odds-on favorite to capture the Woodland-East crown this year, but I have a hard time seeing them going down to Burlington and grabbing a win. The Woodland has struggled vs. the SLC historically, and Burlington, while not as big on the line this year as one would expect from an SLC squad, has some dynamic skill position talent to match the Falcons.

Kewaskum at Milwaukee Lutheran - Kewaskum had an uncharacteristic down year a year ago and still beat Milwaukee Lutheran by three scores. Lutheran lost that big back, and after crashing a bit after he left the school a year ago, they have some work to do.

Shorewood/Messmer at Milwaukee King - S/M got the best of King last year, but the co-op loses a metric ton from last year's Woodland-East championship squad. King meanwhile returns as much experience as you could ask for, and is certainly chomping at the bit to get a measure of revenge here and certainly down-the-line against Riverside.

Racine Park at South Milwaukee - Just like the old Southeast although neither team is anywhere close to those days...well, maybe SM towards the end of their time there. As long as SM figures out a way to keep Mr. Thomas away from Slusar and out-of-the-backfield in general the Rockets should nab a W. For Park, I wanna see something to give me hope here, so some positive offensive statistics and getting some defensive stops will do.

New Berlin West at Elkhorn - Elkhorn was oh-so-close a lot of the time last year, whereas NBW made the playoffs but suffered a surprising L1 loss to a Rock Valley team in East Troy. Elkhorn should be in a pretty good spot to get over the hump this year, which makes me somewhat skittish to take the Woodland team here, but NBW will not be a slouch of a team themselves this year.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Oak Creek - Yeah, this would have been fun circa the mid-2000s. It's been pretty one-sided the last two years. With WISCO taking massive graduation losses, it will likely remain so. OC seems to be getting some pub, though I have to admit I'm not entirely sure why?

Milwaukee Riverside at Pewaukee - I heard Pewaukee had an odd off-season and enters this year with some uncertainty again. Riverside almost caught them napping last year, and could actually do it this year. Plenty of talent returning, and it'd be a bit of a surprise if Riverside is touched in the City this year.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Plymouth - Oh boy. These have been pretty wild season-openers for the most part...and both teams should be in position for playoff runs again. I guess I'll take the home team, but it is very much a coin flip game. Curious to see how IKE replaces Shields and Himmelspach...not that you really replace the former.

Kenosha Tremper at Pius XI - Pius has two games circled on their calendar: WAC and the Week 9 crossover. Tremper has many more games circled as they look to climb back up the SEC standings and get back to the playoffs. A nice, dominant win here will go far for the Trojans, but there are bigger fish to boil.

-Yep, don't worry though, they make up for this long trip by being able to walk down HWY 70 to their Week 2 game in Eagle River.😂

-I've been asking myself this same question since I discovered the existence of Kingdom Prep Lutheran a week ago. I guess I shouldn't be surprised after hearing the rumors about the admission process changing at WISCO. I guess going from Garden Homes Lutheran, etc. to a different part of Wauwatosa isn't gonna be much of a problem. FWIW, KPL's all-frosh JV squad scrimmaged at St. Francis on Saturday and it looked like they had decent numbers for just one class of kids.

-Having seen both WAC and BD at their scrimmages this weekend, I can tell you this, unless Pius had a mass exodus of supposed-to-be returning players they should be more than OK to notch a win or two this year even without STM on the schedule. Heck, they almost beat WAC last year and that WAC team had some players...just a lot of other issues holding it back. Just unfortunate Pius gets SM in the scheduled crossover this year.

Martin Luther at Greenfield - Martin Luther has become the little school that could...unfortunately they lost a couple big pieces to the puzzle from last year, but should still be ok. This game is decidedly a toss up...Greenfield has done some good things with the lower levels which I always thought was the strength of Ringelberg...building enthusiasm and keeping players invested; could go either way, but history favors Martin Luther still.

West Allis Central at Racine St. Catherine's - Gutsy first game for a bigger school. St. Cats should roll though.

Lake Geneva Badger at Greendale - Joe Bustos always does two things...picks Greendale and speaks in the third person. Actually, Joe Bustos didn't do the second one two picks ago, but will always do the first. Joe Bustos thinks the panthers are in for a rough start...but that doesn't mean they can't win. Lots of depth at the skill positions it seems, but lots of questions at the line. Can they get it together? Yes. Yes they can.

Friday, 8/23

Lakeland at Cudahy - I hear good things about Cudahy and I hear bad things about Cudahy. This game will be an indicator.

Sheboygan Falls at Brown Deer - The Jekyll/Hyde nature of BD has sadly been seemingly cured. Here's hoping for more Hyde, but the pick reflects continuation of Jekyll.

Whitnall at Burlington - This is a good first game for Whitnall...so good on them. Great first test, but not so sure it'll pan out.

Kewaskum at Milwaukee Lutheran - ML kind of what Brown Deer used to be...very on, but never as very off.

Shorewood/Messmer at Milwaukee King - Always a tough game to call...is MPS up? Is King up? Messwood has been consistent of late, so a close game bodes well for King. Love the early matchup of natural rivals.

Racine Park at South Milwaukee - Back to the future with Galewski back. This will be an interesting game.

New Berlin West at Elkhorn - The darkhorse reveals itself here.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Oak Creek - Wisco will start slow, but improve. Oak Creek should handle them here...but don't read too much into it.

Milwaukee Riverside at Pewaukee - Late game heroics shouldn't be needed here.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Plymouth - A tough adjustment after having a couple strong classes.

Kenosha Tremper at Pius XI - New staff at Pius seem to be all in...but I think it will take time to see the payoff.

Wow...I'm picking a horrid week for the woodland. Won't be at all surprised to see that I'm being optimistic here ðŸ˜³

Martin Luther at Greenfield: If this matchup occurred maybe in week 4, I have to go with Luther but they need to find themselves a bit early on. Greenfield will be in the mix in the East and should win here in a tight one.

West Allis Central at Racine St. Catherine's: RSC brings back players that saw significant playing time last season and that should ease the blow of losing a bunch of production from the state title team last year. WAC looks to be in for a long painful year in their final season in the Woodland.

Lake Geneva Badger at Greendale: Seems that any team that Greendale opens at home with in non-con play always gives the Panthers a thriller. I expect the same here tonight at Gavinski.

Friday, 8/23

Lakeland at Cudahy: Litmus test for both teams here. If Ashland last year proved anything, it's that the GNC can turn some heads from time to time. Lakeland seems to be poised for a playoff spot but haven't found a way over the hump.

Sheboygan Falls at Brown Deer: Brown Deer seems to scrape up a win or two despite their talent level. However I don't see them getting the jump on Falls this time around.

Whitnall at Burlington: Demons return their QB and have ambitions of pushing Waterford for the SLC crown. Whitnall should be a player in the East but fall short here.

Kewaskum at Milwaukee Lutheran: Lutheran is a big question mark with some talent not at the school anymore. Kewaskum looks to rebound after a rare losing season last year.

Shorewood/Messmer at Milwaukee King: Shorewood has proven that they could turn heads in the past but will have to prove it again this year. King has ambitions of returning to the top of the Richardson this season.

Racine Park at South Milwaukee: If Park wants to get out of the basement they have to prove it here. It'll be close but South Milwaukee pulls away late in this matchup against an old conference foe.

New Berlin West at Elkhorn: Elkhorn was a scrappy team last year with several close losses to other teams. If they could flip a few of those results this year, they could be a factor in the SLC. This matchup against a solid West team will dictate where the Elks are this year.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Oak Creek: Could WISCO miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons? Stay tuned. OC looks to be a solid number two behind Franklin in the SEC this year.

Milwaukee Riverside at Pewaukee: Pewaukee needed a big comeback last year against the Tigers and may need another one this year again too.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Plymouth: This matchup always seems to be wild. I expect the same again this year. IKE should be up near the top of the West but will need new faces to step into big shoes early on.

Kenosha Tremper at Pius XI: At least Pius has a few chances to notch wins towards the end of the year. Tremper looks for big things this season and gets a big win on the road.

Martin Luther at Greenfield - GF wins and are fortunate they didn’t play ML in 2018. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door…..I expect sloppy play and poor execution/confusion from GF but they have too much talent for me to pick the other way. I don’t love the fact that they are playing down a couple divisions for this game but this staff did play the Hope school (Division 5 with about 300 kids) when they were at WAC. Hoppert is a good coach for ML but won’t have the numbers, size and quality depth to win this one.

I still can’t believe the 2017 GF team went 5-6 and took 3rd place in the Woody East with all the talent they had: Pitroski, Singh,Foshey, Rosario, Bartlett, Asrad, Peneau, Hansen, Cross, Boyko and Wolfgram. They closed the year by losing 51-7 to Brookfield Central. Jed called off the dogs very early after getting up 44-0 very quickly. I mean it really got out of hand and he played every kid in uniform and a few kid’s sisters. GF completed 1 pass for 4 yards and had a 0.0 rating. GF wanted to be Greendale north but this still looks like WAC football. Last year Milwaukee Lutheran scored 50 on them while putting up over 600 yards. Bartlett is extremely talented and could be very effective if used properly. They are fortunate to live in the east division.

West Allis Central at Racine St. Catherine's - WAC's program is at the end of the road.

Lake Geneva Badger at Greendale - Greendale will win this game despite a bit of a malaise with the program recently. I don’t know if it’s the ghosts of some of the past playoff losses, the fact that IKE is in charge now or a stale feeling that football isn’t fun anymore. This group of seniors had been hailed as the team to beat since a young age but it hasn’t materialized. They will try and avoid the underachiever label. Maybe I just motivated them? LGB has fallen off quite a bit. Hensler will do his best to run his scheme well for August and make it a game. Joe Bustos has lost a step. The household names are gone for GD and something just feels off.

Friday, 8/23

Lakeland at Cudahy - The 1994 Cudahy state title team will be recognized pregame. Guys like Duginski, Kotarak, Madden, and Grochowski on field inspire the Packers to victory in this ball game

Sheboygan Falls at Brown Deer - Would be hard to sit through this one.

Whitnall at Burlington - Burlington hasn't had this kind of offensive talent since the Romo days.

Kewaskum at Milwaukee Lutheran - Kewaskum wins easy.

Shorewood/Messmer at Milwaukee King - I use the same strategy every year for this game, pick against the Woody.

Racine Park at South Milwaukee - Bottom Feeders duke it out.

New Berlin West
at Elkhorn- West is a sleeper team this year.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Oak Creek - Sounds like Oak Creek might be back.

Milwaukee Riverside at Pewaukee - Despite missing some dudes Pewaukee gets it done.

New Berlin Eisenhower
at Plymouth - IKE wins in a workmanlike fashion. Graduation hurt this squad. But there’s some talent left and they definitely have culture. Kern is like Dabo. IKE hasn’t lost a conference game since 2016, I believe. They are celebrating 50 years of school and 50 years of football. Isaac Freichel's pulse is measured on the richter scale. This kid is a good shot putter too, I am convinced I can help teach him to throw it 60 feet this year. Buechel will be a match-up nightmare. Seifert will be a year wiser and asked to do more this year. He only threw 4 pics in 13 games last year. IKE sure could have used that kind of efficiency in 1989. Hoelke will be the Swiss army knife. The hogs up front lifted hard in the offseason. The defense will be a work in progress, but will be fundamentally sound. NBW and Pewaukee are supposedly ascending. GD isn’t sure if they can win the big conference game anymore. The West should be competitive if nothing else for the top 4 teams. I can’t travel to this one but look forward to seeing them play GF next week. Still searching for a feel and theme for this year’s team.

Kenosha Tremper
at Pius XI - Will Pius win a game this year.
