Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer - ML held up a bit better to Kewaskum in a loosing effort than I thought they would.

Whitnall
at Cudahy - Whitnall rolls.

South Milwaukee
at Shorewood/Messmer - very disappointing opener for both.

New Berlin West at Greendale - NBW rolled elkhorn while the Panthers had too many missed opportunities to stay competitive with LGB. Will not be surprised to see more pick NBW, and no one should be surprised that I'll pick Greendale.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - Pewaukee rebounds big.

Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central - Wow, WAC has got it's work cut out for them. WL wins big.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greenfield - The hawks were close-ish last week...not here.

Kudos to Riverside. 2019's shaping up to be a good year for the City. The Woodland on the other hand... yikes.

East

Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer - Red Lutherans might have had the best loss in the Woodland East last week. That surely qualifies them for something...

Whitnall at Cudahy - Two more Woodland East squads, two more close losses. Burlington has really struggled with defense during the Tenhagen era so I don't read too much into the Falcons' showing there, but I love the ground-and-pound mentality. I suspect it will be too much for Cudahy, as well as the rest of this would-be finesse division. More of these teams should take their cue from Whitnall and they might actually stand a chance against schools that actually have the athletes to run spread attacks right.

Sou
th Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - SM vs. S/M. Scoreless vs. RUSD against Hammered by MPS.  A source at SM told me that was the best Park team since Clay graduated. Maybe our man Michael Gardner is on to something and they'll make some noise in the Southeast this year. Regardless, SM should have been a lot better and I couldn't pick the Rockets this week if they were playing (as Jim Teff used to say) the Little Sisters of the Poor.  In a better world, they'd fire a couple administrators, call Coach Knoche's son down in Chandler, AZ and offer him the sum of both those available salaries to come home, re-install the wishbone and run a defense that isn't Swiss cheese.

West

New Berlin West at Greendale - All the signs indicate that this could be the signature victory West is looking for to turn the corner on their ascent into a winning program. This being the Woodland, that probably means Greendale will go off on them 42-7 or something... but give me the Vikings for the heck of it.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - If only half the kids who played for the "Pius Junior Popes" through 2017 had actually gone to Pius.

Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central - Wisco couldn't handle St. Cat's right now either, but a 70-point beatdown seems unlikely. Obviously WAC is way down. I feel bad for both of these schools.

Crossover

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greenfield - Greenfield vs Martin Luther went exactly the way I expected it would. The team and school with the culture of winning beat the team and school without one. You have to throw out enrollment in situations like that. Ike is going to pick up some serious steam here and may not be challenged until their nearly-annual playoff loss to Memorial.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer - Brown Deer graduated so much, and then to top it off their multi-year starter at QB doesn't return as well. As such, BD will play out the string until Week 9. Milwaukee Lutheran didn't embarrass itself in Week 1, which I guess is a moral victory, but Kewaskum seems headed for its second straight un-Kewaskum year. That said, the Red Knights should have the clock in continuous motion by halftime here.

Whitnall at Cudahy - After one week, these two are looking like the cream of the crop in the Woodland-East...and they both lost, in case you needed a reminder of where the league stands. I think, (key word: think), Whitnall lost to the better team, and is the better team overall...they certainly have the best player. Expect a scoreline similar to last week and take the over.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - Shorewood turned back the clock last week, but when you're that program it better go back to at least 1981 and more likely the 1950s if you want it to be a good result. Sadly, the dial said 1997. South Milwaukee themselves accidentally hit the "back to the Southeast" button and received a cruel punishment for such a simple mistake. Shame of last week aside, the Rockets still have some playmakers, while Shorewood has Sam Campbell and a cast of new faces. Hard to win with super low junior/senior numbers. Actually, BD may not have to wait until Week 9 to get a decent game.

West

New Berlin West at Greendale - Would this be an upset pick? I don't know. NBW really seems to have it rolling and this game will certainly be a barometer for them. Conversely, G'Dale did not have it rolling in Week 1, the potential's there, but they need to find it. The winner takes the driver's seat in the race to see who IKE's biggest threat is.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - Week 1's performance confirmed what I'd been hearing about the Pirates' "odd" off-season. It will be a work in progress out there in Watt-land. Pius was well, Pius, in Week 1. They probably have a few Ws coming their way (starting next week), but keeping it under a running clock here would be a moral victory.

Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central - There's probably still some talent making it's way through the halls at WISCO, and while its no longer elite or being coached up above its ability, it's enough to stave off truly bad results most nights in the Woodland. If my "math" is correct, WAC returned zero linemen this year. Not zero linemen with varsity playing experience. Zero "varsity rostered a year ago" linemen. Not sure how that happens even at the tiniest of schools. There isn't much to say here, but yet I'll say a lot. So it goes. This season is going to be an absolute struggle for the Bulldogs. I worry for the immediate future of the program since they and Hale were sentenced to the HS football gulag by getting thrown/kept in the GMC the next two seasons, but this season itself needs to be played out first. Coach Thompson has his work cut out for him, I hope he's up for going above and beyond because that's the only thing that'll ultimately pay any dividends.

And not to belabor the obvious, but this conference did itself absolutely no favors with how it split up its schools for this sport.

2 and 12. Thank your lucky stars there's one "affluent" suburb in this league.

Crossover

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greenfield - Silly me for picking Greenfield, especially after espousing how much the "winning culture" instilled at ML by its two basketball programs has turned that athletics program on its ear. IKE prevailed in its yearly wild game against Plymouth. They should give those two schools a trophy or something for all the entertainment folks have gotten out of that series.

Week Two Matchups

Friday, 8/30

East

Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer
Tayshaun White is the lone star over at Brown Deer. Wouldn’t be surprised if they lose every game in the East.

Whitnall at Cudahy
Cudahy has one of the more talented QBs in the state but not much around him. Whitnall runs wild.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer
If Messwood turns over the ball Five times every game they will end the season winless. Messwood has Sam Campbell but can barely get him the ball. The graduation of Eimers hurt this team more than anything. I’m going out and saying week one isn’t a accurate reflection of this team’s “potential”. I think we’ll see a much better performance from this team this week.

West

New Berlin West at Greendale
This game can go both ways and I’m probably going with my heart more than my mind here. With that said I’m taking Stoltz in this battle. NBW is TOUGH. Big, physical and tough at all positions.

Pius XI at Pewaukee
Pewaukee had some of their better players suspended and injured last week. The Riverside loss is respectable, but this team will get better as the season goes on.

Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central
WAC is too talented in every other sport not to have a “stable” program at least. They need to find a identity. Maybe a transfer to the Woodland can help that.

Is it safe to say Greenfield has gotten worse since the departure of Coach Covington?

Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer: That game against Kewaskum was probably one of the better results for the Woodland last week. ML should have not many issues here.

Whitnall at Cudahy: This is probably the GOTW of the Woodland this week. I expect a track meet here.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer: Both teams did the time warp again last week and unfortunate for both, the results were horrific to say the least *Chucks some Toast*

West

New Berlin West at Greendale: Why do I feel weird for picking West here or maybe it's the vibe of how GDale could not get much going after the first quarter against Badger last week.

Pius XI at Pewaukee: Well Pewaukee could not get a comeback against Riverside going this year. At least Pius will be a better showing.

Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central: Uh what was that WAC? I know you would be hurting for talent and depth but 74 points allowed? It felt like St. Cat's could've ran it up but granted this was a D4 school absolutely nuking a D2. Hopefully some better results are in store but this week another running clock ensues.

Crossover

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greenfield: Apparently ML wasn't as down as we thought or Greenfield isn't as hyped as we think. Either way IKE rolls.

Whitnall - went back and forth on this, sounds like Cudahy could be fun team this year and player in the East but need to have them beat a team like Whitnall first.
South Milwaukee - Trusting that Park is pretty good and South Milwaukee laid an egg, maybe a bounce back against a down S/M team.
New Berlin West - Went back and forth on this more than the Whitnall-Cudahy game, NBWest has played GD tight the last few years, maybe this is the year.... is it still an upset?
Pewaukee
Wisconsin Lutheran - Crazy how different things are now for a team like Wisco despite that WAC seems to be in a worse place.
New Berlin Eisenhower - WESTSIDE!

Lot of 0-1s this past week. Traveling this week so these will be brief.

East

Milwaukee Lutheran at Brown Deer - One team has to get to 1-1.
Whitnall at Cudahy - Whitnall's performance against Burlington last week was highlight for east.
South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - Can't pick a team that got blasted by a city team last week.

West

New Berlin West at Greendale
Pius XI at Pewaukee - Bye week for Pewaukee
Wisconsin Lutheran at West Allis Central - Stallis football is at an all time low. Outscored 123-7 last week.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greenfield -  IKE over Greenfield. Greenfield is fortunate this game wasn’t played the last 2 years because they would have had a hard time crossing the 50 yard line and would have given up a ridiculous amount of points and yards. The end result will be the same tonight despite the talent Greenfield has. IKE is a work in progress. They are pretty efficient despite  having a lot of new faces. We have been used to regular season dominance from IKE in recent years. This team will probably have a chip on their shoulder as they hear about all the talent that has departed with graduation. IKE will still have some convincing final scores but it will take longer to separate from the opposition than past seasons.

Isaac Freichels did in fact, build Rome in a day. This isn’t Colt Filipowicz’s first rodeo. Plymouth hung around longer than Kern would have preferred but IKE is sound in the kicking game again and was 3 points better. Kern created culture.

Greenfield does not have culture. Their loss last week to Greendale Martin Luther had to sting. They played a smaller school that lost incredible production to graduation and was breaking in a new qb. I guess we have come to expect this from the current regime. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door. We have been seduced by Greenfield’s talent but the execution doesn’t match it. Their offense struggles mightily against quality opponents. They have enough games against bottom feeders to get a few stats. The opposing teams offenses must salivate at the stats they will put up against Greenfield’s defense. QB’s really feast on these units. I harken back to last year when Sanchez of Greendale had a 118.0 qb rating and didn’t have an incompletion. Milwaukee Lutheran’s Josiah Hedrington’s rating was 154.0 last year and his offense put up over 600 yards and 50 points. They averaged 12 yards a carry. There was confusion at all 3 levels. The previous year that same kid had a 157.0 rating. Drew Leszczynski, the qb for Brookfield Central was fortunate enough to face this defense twice as well. He had a 150.0 rating last year and a 134.0 in 2017. It was the same story when this group was at WAC. Marquette’s qb’s Freddy Poorman and Jack Dwyer had 158.0 and 125.0 ratings respectively.

Last week’s game really painted a picture. GDML had lost Reid (nearly 2300 rushing yards in 2018) and a very efficient qb to graduation. Coach Rick Hoppert is a builder who gets it and knows football. He continues to shine and maximize his player’s talent. I had heard from several people that GDML was fortunate to get him as a coach. He was a former 3 sport standout at GDML. He played behind some outstanding qb’s at UW-La Crosse but was always soaking up the details that would make him a great coach. I’m told on good authority that he was a good holder as well and believes in special teams. His son got the nod at qb last Friday and executed the plan. He threw for almost 300 yards, 3 td’s and had a 151.0 rating. The beat goes on for Greenfield. Hats off to Rick Hoppert and company for a non conference win against a much larger school in week 1 after losing as much productivity to graduation as anyone. If Rick Hoppert speaks at a clinic going forward, the GF staff needs to attend.

I will not be in Greenfield tonight as I am climbing a mountain out West. I will watch the game when I return. I think I know how it will look. Kern and crew will win the x’s and o’s battle. IKE isn’t fully healthy by any means but they get it and will be fine. Does GF push a few of the right buttons and hang around for a bit?

New Berlin West at Greendale - I take Greendale. This is an enormous prove it game for both teams. NBW has to beat someone of note at some point to be considered anything more than an upper division Woodland team. Although, I don’t know how GD measures up at the moment, are they still a team of note? NBW has been a good rushing team since “Gentle Ben” Chossek took over. He’s another builder and a former teammate of Rick Hoppert’s at UW-La Crosse. I have more questions than answers for both teams. NBW can probably deal with a loss better than GD. We need to pump the breaks on last week’s results. NBW beat a bad Elkhorn team the way they should have. Greendale’s loss to LGB wasn’t terrible statistically and LGB will be better than Elkhorn. Greendale has definitely lost swagger and confidence. This had to be the most difficult pick for the Woodland forum group this week. We wrestle with what we have seen in the past while looking at what we see this year. Both teams better put their best foot forward tonight. Morale could be low and things could spiral downward if GD gets gashed tonight
