Burlington at Racine Horlick - Horlick struggled to find their footing against what's penciled in as the #3 team in the City. Generally, that'd be a huge cause for concern, but the top of the City is looking to be rather decent this season. Burlington struggled to stop Whitnall's run game, but moved it up and down the field themselves. Shootout? In that case, I like the multi-dimensional team.

Union Grove at Racine Park - Clearly Park's off-season commitment paid dividends, but after seeing the Woodland-East (heck, most of the Woody) fold like a deck chair in Week 1, I'm viewing it with an appropriate amount of caution. UG took a massive blow when scholarship lineman and team leader Mickey Rewolinski broke his leg on the first play of the year. They also sat their starting QB, who should be back this week. So, not sure where the Broncos' heads will be at. I still see UG as a much better measuring stick than South Milwaukee. Another cruise here would definitely put Park on the map...though I'd still cue up Jim Mora if anyone mentions the "P" word. 😎

Oak Creek at Waterford - Bradford threw their sophomore QB to the fire and had him throw it 45 times. It was just too easy for the Wolverine defense. OC will present a different kind of challenge and I think at this point it will be a little too much for a good Waterford team, but one that is still developing its trench play. Bradford really kept their ground game in check until Keller broke their backs from 85 late, and they showed little through the air. Waterford will be better in Week 8, but for now, I'll take OC.

Friday, 8/30

Delavan-Darien at Milwaukee North - It was about the only fun the Comets had all last year, and may be the same this year...still don't know beyond eligibility issues why North doesn't just play vs. HOPE in Week 1. That's a Custer Stadium Classic waiting to happen.

Lake Geneva Badger at Kenosha Bradford - This will probably go a lot similar to LGB's opener. KB's run D looked decent against Waterford, but eventually got ground down. I'm still not entirely sure what Bradford was hoping to achieve wildly slinging the ball around with an inexperienced QB. They should have rode Darden and Handford (I know he was also playing D) more than they did. Put way too much on the young man's shoulders.

Elkhorn at Lakeside Lutheran - LL had to replace a lot but rolled in the opener. A bit disappointed by the Elks in Week 1 although NBW may prove to be pretty good. Can definitely see the Elks winning here in what should be a decent non-conference tilt.

Wilmot at Racine Case - As much as I'd like to, it remains tough to pick Case in these situations. By all accounts they absolutely dominated Westosha Central with a new commitment to the running game😍, yet still only put up 26 points in the end. The defense was stout, but that was expected vs. a team likely to struggle this year. Wilmot may not be what they have been, but they certainly won't be a pushover. Get a win here Eagles, and then I'll be impressed.

Westosha Central at Woodstock North (IL) - Only really see one game on the schedule where Westosha will be competitive this year.

Quite a few tossups for the league this week. Have a weird feel that Horlick-Burlington will be a shootout. Union Grove should be a better test for Park but UG looks considerably banged up after the RaLu game. Waterford better have figured out some offensive rhythm and can't really rely on the D to bail them out. D-D should roll North. I see a slobberknocker between Badger and Bradford. Not sure what to make of Elkhorn now considering the result against NBW last week and Lakeside should be okay in the Cap North this year. Case-Wilmot is a interesting matchup especially if Case pulls out a win against a upper-tier SLC foe. As for Westosha....ugh....getting shutout by Case who found a running game wasn't a good look for a struggling program.
