The FIBA World Cup begins at the end of August.  This won't be like teams of the past filled with star studded lineups.  The World Cup has always been somewhat secondary to the Olympics, but I don't ever recall guys opting out of the World Cup then to play in the Olympics.  The roster is as follows to this point:

G-Damian Lillard, Kemba Walker, Kyle Lowry, Bradley Beal, Donovan Mitchell
F-Khris Middleton, Kevin Love, Jayson Tatum, Paul Millsap, Tobias Harris, Kyle Kuzma, PF Tucker, Harrison Barnes
C-Brook Lopez, Myles Turner, Andre Drummond

James Harden, CJ McCollum, Anthony Davis and Eric Gordon all recently opted out of their roster invite.  Kyle Lowry also recently had surgery and I'd be surprised to see him play.

Zion Williamson, Trae Young and John Collins got invites for the select team and may end up in training camp as well.

With the roster currently constructed, I'd venture their 13 is:

G-Lillard, Walker, Beal, Mitchell
F-Middleton, Love, Tatum, Millsap, Tucker, Harris
C-Lopez, Turner

Out: Lowry, Kuzma, Barnes, Drummond

It feels like people are making a big deal about the dropouts, but the numbers are relatively consistent when  compared historically.

This has very much been a B-team tourney for the U.S. for years.

I didn't realize this until I actually looked at the rosters:

2014 US FIBA World Cup Team-
PG-Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Derrick Rose
SG-James Harden, Klay Thompson
SF-Demar DeRozan, Rudy Gay
PF-Anthony Davis, Kenneth Faried
C-Demarcus Cousins, Andre Drummond, Mason Plumlee

Withdrew-Lebron James, Kawhi Leonard, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Lamarcus Aldridge, Deron Williams, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Andre Iguodala, David Lee, Tyson Chandler

2016 US Olympic Team-
PG-Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry
SG-Klay Thompson, Jimmy Butler, Demar DeRozan
SF-Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Paul George, Harrison Barnes
PF-Draymond Green
C-DeAndre Jordan, Demarcus Cousins

Current roster-

PG-Kemba Walker, De'Aaron Fox, Kyle Lowry, Derrick White
SG-Donovan Mitchell, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart
SF-Jayson Tatum, Khris Middleton, Harrison Barnes, Joe Harris
PF-PJ Tucker, Kyle Kuzma, Marvin Bagley
C-Brook Lopez, Myles Turner, Mason Plumlee

That roster is at 17, with 5 cuts remaining to bring the roster to 12.  Kyle Lowry is still recovering from a surgery.  If he is healthy to play, he'll make the roster.  I'd bet Plumlee, White, Smart, Kuzma, Harris are the 5 cuts.

Lowry is out and Bagley apparently withdrew from consideration.

A poor U.S. team crashes out in the quarters to France.

Olympic qualification was secured however, which was the most important thing to gain from this.

If you didn't see that coming, you weren't really looking at the roster.

Outside of Kemba, who even comes close to making an "A" squad?

Some of the pieces out there are funny. "Has the world caught up to America in basketball?" It did, 15 years ago and then stagnated when the U.S. started taking the international game seriously again. This was a C-team that then had injury issues.

It'll be interesting to see how many guys pull out of Olympic consideration next year compared to for this World Cup. I bet it's significantly less.

C team might be generous.  Probably around the E or F team.

A friend and I were talking about the team one night, so we pulled up a random ranked list of the top 100 players in the NBA.  Kemba was #17.  Middleton was like 37 and 2 others made the top 50.  3 or 4 guys weren't even in the top 100.

My guess is most of the big names jump in for the Olympics because of the hype it will generate around redemption after the worst loss by USA basketball in 40ish years.

U.S. falls behind to Serbia 32-7 after the first quarter and loses a loser's bracket game, 94-89.

The U.S. can now not finish any higher than 7th.
