With boys hoops getting underway next week, this is how is see the league potentially shaping up this year.

1. Marinette ( the Marines have been building for this since eighth grade. What a position for new head coach Matthew Joost to step into with all the talent coming back. Even with the loss of one of the Wagner boys, Marinette still has the most returning talent in the league.

2. Freedom (Now in his second year with the Irish, John Miron has all the optimism in the world to do great things. Last season, Freedom was beginning to find their groove before a mid-season injury to one of their best players slowed things down. Now healthy once again, Freedom appears ready to put year two of the Miron plan to the test.

3. Denmark (Much like Marinette, Denmark has a ton of talent coming back and could be sleepers in the league this season. With zane short, Patrick Suemnick among two of the leaders, the VIkings will not only have size and skill returning, but experience also.)

4. Wrightstown ( The defending NEC champions are losing a bunch of talent from last season with James Hansen, Luke Haase and Jacob Beining all lost through graduation. Despite that, potential NEC player of the year Mayson Hazaert returns along with a bunch of role players that should gel as the season goes on.)

5. Little CHute (Another solid season for the Mustangs last season may take a small step back this season as Jacob VanRoy takes over for MIckey Martin. Little Chute will need to replace three starters, but bring back one of the best in the league in Noah MUeller. Even with a lot of experience returning from the bench last season, the question is who will help Mueller in terms of points.)

6. Waupaca (THe Comets have been an interesting team for some time as the talent seems to be there, but not developed in the proper way. In comes former JV head coach Ethan Dayton as he looks to see his players develop at a much quicker pace this year.)

7. FVL (Another coaching change in the conference as Nick Karbula takes over for Matt Koepsall. The Foxes have not been where they have wanted to be in recent seasons and aim to get back to the top of the league. I feel they are still a year or so away.)

8. Casco (Not much went right for the Spartans last season as they struggled all year. This year, expect them to be more competitive, but with how deep the league is, wins may be hard to come by.)

9. Oconto Falls ( THe Panthers have some talent on their roster, but not enough depth to make too much noise just yet.

10. Clintonville ( a new head coach taking over a team that had their worst season in five years makes for rough sailing this year.

My picks:

1. Freedom - senior led and deep, this team should win the NEC and be the favorites for Madison (but beware Denmark and Wtown!)

2. Denmark - a lot of size and experience should lead them.  I am not sure what depth they have behind the strong senior class.

3. Wrightstown - very talented team in Wtown.  Hazaert is as good as anyone in the area and they will ride him as far as they can.

4. Marinette - expectations have been tough to reach, and the loss of Wagner is huge.  If they come together quickly they can compete for the title.

5. Little Chute - very good senior class but will need some scoring punch behind Mueller.

6. FVL - talented and athletic group, but I feel like I type that every year.

7. Paca  - Ethan Dayton will bring a fresh start, and this group has size and talent.

8. Casco - not many teams in the state disappointed as much as this one.  Will they move up the ladder?

9. Oconto Falls - Panthers were skilled but inconsistent this year.  They could challenge for the top 6 potentially.

10. Clintonville - likely to struggle in a deep and balanced league.

Favorites to go to Madison, I wouldn't go that far. Don't get me wrong Freedom will have a solid team who should contend for the title to go along with the best coach in the conference, but they are not even ranked to begin the year. Do I see them getting to sectionals, yes, but Valders and SOuthern Door have a better shot at state than Freedom imop.
