Cudahy at Brown Deer - So many close games from BD this year. That has got to be frustrating beyond belief. I don't think this will be more of the same though. Cudahy's offense is rolling.

Shorewood/Messmer at Greenfield - Heavily predicated on whether Bartlett returns or not...or maybe it isn't. Who knows? S/M has been solid and consistent this year. Greenfield couldn't muster any offense once Bartlett left the game. He walked off, but that left knee injury didn't look pretty.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran - As far as crossovers go, this one should be decent. The smart money is on the West, but this ML team can put up points in a hurry. That sophomore RB is special. They just might be able to outscore the Vikings...at the very least, THIS game won't end in a tie.

Whitnall at South Milwaukee - Not much separates these two...or maybe it's a lot. In any case I think SM gets a lead and actually holds it for once in this one.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - The Pirates should coast to victory here, although last week wasn't exactly pretty from what I hear. The bright side is the teams probably won't have to be evacuated from the field this week after a fight breaks out in the crowd. 🙄

Greendale at New Berlin West - West got a reality check last week, and another one is probably forthcoming here. Good to see Greendale respond as well as they did after the IKE loss.

West Allis Central at New Berlin Eisenhower - This was 63-0 last year, my hope is that is not the case again, although it's a safe bet that at least half that scoreline returns.

Cudahy at Brown Deer - A coach had told me early in the year, less than a week after the Packers received a beatdown against St. Cat, that Cudahy was going to be a very good team in the east. His reasoning was the coaching, and that prediction is looking very prescient.

Shorewood/Messmer at Greenfield - Hopefully Bartlett is ok; hate hearing of an injury to a promising, exciting to watch athlete. With Bartlett in top form, Greenfield has better than a puncher's chance in the game. Without him, not so much.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran - Really torn here. WL has some good talent, decent size, and has the kind of offense that preys on defenses with less than stellar discipline. But ML obviously put the points up in bunches, and can do so in a myriad of ways. I'm giving the edge to the Vikings over the Knights; I think senior heavy WL is able to avoid the frequent defensive breakdown that leads to ML's big plays and comebacks.

Whitnall at South Milwaukee - SM gets the edge here...both are young and inexperienced, but the rockets are just a smidge more battle-tested.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - The Pirates get to build a little confidence.

Greendale at New Berlin West - Never know what you're going to get with NBW/Greendale matchup. Panther's have had a recent history of struggling to generate points against the Vikings. Greendale has to be ready to battle.

West Allis Central at New Berlin Eisenhower - Ike better find a way to score more than 31 points this week.

We all know I'm not a fan of the divisional breakdown in this league, but one thing in its favor-- the scores in the East were all close last week, with three really competitive games. It's fair to think Wisco, WAC and Pius would have a puncher's chance over there too, with NBW and Pewaukee a cut above and Ike and Greendale the only real "powers" in the conference this year.

From a purely competitive standpoint, this league would be a whole lot of fun if you pulled in the Tosas and Hale.  Or if Oak Creek split into two schools a la Brookfield and New Berlin, instead of always trying to be Arrowhead South....

Friday, 9/21

Cudahy at Brown Deer - Agreed with Joe, Cudahy has some good coaches. Their HC could be a lifer, he loves that community, and I have heard the staff is pretty tight-knit. They will keep building. Numbers are very low in their youth program, but they can improve that over time as well. Meanwhile, the Brown Deer Brown Deer were sooooo close to pulling it off last week. I will pick the Packers here but I don't put the possibility of an upset past BD.

Shorewood/Messmer at Greenfield - Messwood is starting to impress me. They are trending up whereas the needle for Greenfield is trending downward. Take the team on a roll. This co-op has reached the point of maturity; it's more than just a great story now.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran - Wow, this one could be another barnburner. The Red Lutherans have the more impressive numbers and record, but the Blue Lutherans have played a much tougher schedule. In a non-con playoff game, I'd take Wisco for that reason... and I'll do the same thing here.

Whitnall at South Milwaukee - SM is showing a ton of inconsistency and it's killing them. No idea why they can't close these games out--but they'd better do it this week if they want to make the playoffs.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - In a few years Pewaukee will have 1300 kids and a membership in the Classic 8. I hope that by then Pius will have hired a coach who stays with them long enough to build something.  Maybe it's this guy-- here's hoping.  He's said to love the school, which is a big step forward from the mercenary approach of Koch and Machado... I have to wonder how much hiring those two guys in succession had to do with the decline since they left the C8.  Every school Koch leaves suffers a serious dropoff, and Machado wasn't exactly a "builder" either.

Greendale at New Berlin West - NBW has the defense to keep this close, but it's hard to see Greendale dropping a game they should win.

West Allis Central at New Berlin Eisenhower - I hope there's some wrestlers on the WAC football team so they can at least get a little revenge for this one in the winter.

Uh because the Athletic complex is at Hale. 😎

Also that's a first to have a game stopped because of that. When Hale finally beat Central in 2005 for the first time in a while, we had Central students trying to rush our side of the field to fight Hale's student section (which I was a part of) but granted it was very late in the game when that happened....

Week Six

Friday, 9/21

Cudahy at Brown Deer - Brown Deer at home could get over the hump and take one from Cudahy but I'll pick with the Pack for now. First game of three where I think the "favorite" could drop one.
Shorewood/Messmer at Greenfield - Game Number Two. It is the East.
Milwaukee Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran - Not really confident in this but I am rooting for the East current top dog to show out.
Whitnall at South Milwaukee - Game Number Three. I am guessing at least one of them losing but I don't know which.
Pius XI at Pewaukee - Won't be close.
Greendale at New Berlin West - Could be really close
West Allis Central at New Berlin Eisenhower  - Won't be close.

Cudahy at Brown Deer - A game for the ages.

Shorewood/Messmer at Greenfield -  I have to take GF based on talent with or without a qb. I can’t think of a team that has cost me more points over a year and a half span ever. Messwood is a paper tiger and someone has to win games in the East, I guess.

I do know that Joe Koch is not walking through that door. GF moved the ball and scored a bunch of points last week, but found a way to lose. Without their late magic against Brown Deer they would be 0-5. Ouch. They have a paper machet D, absolutely porous. It looks like the same D played at WAC in 2015 and 2016. GF surrendered 342 yards on the ground last week and 257 in the air. I crunch numbers for a living and that’s 599 total yards. That’s a tough way to win ball games. Stoltz isn’t their to run the ship. A rb for Lutheran averaged almost 16 yards a carry. The stage might be too big. But I like GF this week. I don’t think that they will find a way to lose, yet again.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Wisconsin Lutheran - ML has the inside track on a title game matchup with Ike.

Whitnall at South Milwaukee - Poor loss for SM last week, they rebound here.

Pius XI at Pewaukee - Bye week for Pewaukee.

Greendale
at New Berlin West -  GD wins and cruises. Don’t be fooled by NBW’s record. They beat the weak teams and lose to anybody who is solid at all. West needs a signature win at some point to be considered something other than a team filling out the Woodland West and preying upon the bottom feeders.

This is a boring time for GD. They are merely waiting for their playoff division assignment and draw. How much did the loss to IKE hurt them? One would think it made their road tougher, but you never know. They pounded a weak Wisco team, a hollow victory in 2018. I suspect they will pound NBW. Let’s see how hungry they are.

West Allis Central at New Berlin Eisenhower - IKE please. WAC is still WAC. This could have been a Kern - Ringleburg game. Oh boy, heaven help us. IKE is playing out the schedule as is GD and there aren’t meaningful games left in the regular season. IKE will continue to play hard against little resistance. It will be a catch 22 for Kern on working on things and getting experience for starters before the games get too out of hand. Kern never tries to rub it in, but I think the next few weeks could get out of hand even with vanilla second halves and reserves in the game.

Tough men eat nails. Mark Shields does all his grocery shopping at Home Depot. IKE wants to work on throwing the ball a bit early and having the O line gel to full potential. The big plays from last year were going to be hard to replicate. I think the lunch pail mentality is working for now. I saw Kern and the Crowley brothers at the Packer game last week. When you are winning awards the tickets are free. Life is good. IKE is in an ideal spot at the moment. We will see how much better this team can get. I’m not sure how good CMH really is and an IKE - GD rematch is a possibility. IKE and GD will have had a long layoff of quality competition. That first and even second playoff game should not be a backbreaker. Although seeding meetings can be funny.

Game of Note

Southern Door at Menominee (MI) - Give me Southern Door. I still remember the Jim Flanigan Southern Door state title many years ago. He did it all in that title game. Had a large rushing total, threw a TD pass, and kicked Field Goals.

Brown Deer at Pewaukee - Good for BD for getting that first win...and won't be surprised if it's another close one here.

Whitnall at Greenfield - Though GF will struggle to find points, I think they should be able to keep whitnall at bay...barely.

Milwaukee Lutheran
at Shorewood/Messmer - This is a real interesting matchup; ML is usually able to prey on teams with their athleticism, but not sure it'll help them much here. Messwood seems to have some semblance of defensive discipline, which is definitely needed against to have a chance against ML. Still, I think most would see ML as the hands on favorite if not by too much.

Cudahy at South Milwaukee - This might be the most in doubt, balanced matchup of these teams in a decade...hopefully the locals show up and get a good show.

Greendale
at West Allis Central - Greendale certainly has a Jekyll/Hyde vibe going, and that's not good. For 1 and a half quarters, Greendale seemed just fine against West. The remainder? Rubbish.

New Berlin Eisenhower
at Pius XI - Pius needs to remain healthy. NEEDS to.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin West - West played lights out last Friday, and well enough to win. WL doesn't seem too far off talent wise, so this has the potential to be a good, close game. I give the edge to West...while both teams have good athletes, I think NBW coaching staff is a bit more adaptive and makes better in game adjustments, and overall more offensive dynamism.

Brown Deer at Pewaukee - You gotta feel for BD with all those close misses earlier this year. They really shutdown the Packers last week and got a much-needed program win. Pewaukee hasn't been particularly great this year and maybe the Falcons compete for a half or so. Baby steps.

Whitnall at Greenfield - The co-op is pretty solid defensively, but it was super telling that Greenfield couldn't do much last week. Tried two different guys at QB. I'm guessing they settle on Lopez this week as it sounds like Bartlett's injury is a patella tendon. Whitnall should be able to run the ball effectively. That gives them a slight edge. Greenfield's out of the playoffs too essentially (crazy!), wonder if that affects how they play?

Milwaukee Lutheran at Shorewood/Messmer - This was a rout last year, and I get the feeling that ML is just a really bad matchup for the otherwise game co-op.

Cudahy at South Milwaukee - Like Joe said, nice to get this rivalry game back to a competitive level. I hope it's a nice throwback game for the community. Cudahy has sputtered since that early success...guessing that will continue here, though this will probably be a close game.

Greendale at West Allis Central - Greendale can probably afford to play like they did last week and still win quite comfortably here. Still...last week's performance has to be a bit disconcerting, no?

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI - Just hope Pius makes it out alive.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin West - I just can't trust WISCO. West on the other hand has been up for the challenge in every game so far this year. The sledding won't be easy for either side (I'm expecting less than 4 TDs combined), but I don't believe in WISCO's ability to close.

Game of Note

Oak Creek at Racine Horlick - I think last week's result was indicative of OC benefiting from a light early schedule. They definitely caught that IL team in the right year. Curious to see if McNeal and Clark play for Horlick. If they don't this pick becomes a bit more tenuous.

Brown Deer at Pewaukee - I really want to pick the Brown Deer Brown Deer. It doesn't seem like so long ago that this was a highly-charged Parkland Conference rivalry, and they deserve to pull one out. I just can't bring myself to believe Pewaukee is struggling enough to drop a crossover, though.

Whitnall at Greenfield - Whitnall nearly pulled it out against South Milwaukee last week and has a lot more positive momentum on their side. Greenfield looks to be mired in a downward spiral. It's really hard to right a ship in that situation.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Shorewood/Messmer - The Red Lutherans are smarting from that tilt with Wisco. They should get back on track here, though I have to feel that Messwood has a chance to surprise. This is, after all, the East-- where every game lately has been super close.

Cudahy at South Milwaukee - Look, I'm an SM alum, but whenever this rivalry decides a playoff berth, Cudahy always seems to find a way to win. It's a shame that they aren't likely to have anyone in the vistors' stands. Maybe I'll sneak over there in my father-in-law's 1960 Cudahy jersey just to try and balance the odds a little.

Greendale at West Allis Central - Greendale rolls, but this won't help them tune up for the playoffs any unless they get a first-round matchup with a City Conference foe.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Pius XI - For Ike see Greendale, above. Pius is overmatched in the West right now and won't be able to rebuild their program playing games like this week in and week out.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin West - West has played tougher vs common opponents.  That's enough for me.

Game of Note

Oak Creek at Racine Horlick - Tough call. I tend to believe that both of these schools are paper tigers propped up by what's become a relatively lightweight large-school conference... a far cry from the turn of the century when the SEC was one of the two or three best leagues in the state. I'll take OC to shake off their malaise and get back on track, but it's not a very confident pick.
