Greenfield at Milwaukee Lutheran - I have some faith that the Hawks will get better. Unfortunately they aren't where they need to be to beat MilLu yet. But MiLu could very easily let the hawks in this game...

Brown Deer at Whitnall - Not very confident in this pick. Really, there is no reason to be confident here...

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - Words fail me. But SM shouldn't.

Pewaukee at West Allis Central - Pewaukee gets a chance to regroup and refocus.

New Berlin Eisenhower at New Berlin West - Even if Ike only gets 150 yds, that should be enough to win with their D. But the battle of Berlin has some excitement built in this week with two undefeateds!

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - Ugh...ugly game. Greendale's D actually played great against Ike, but the offense struggled against a strong Ike Defense. Limitations were exposed, and WiLu might try to replicate Ike's effort...but can they? Greendale should win, but it will be a tougher road than perhaps I'd have thought last week.

Cudahy at Pius XI - I think the Cud puts up big big numbers on the Popes. Too bad Machado isn't still around so that it could be seen as some semblance of "payback."

Greenfield at Milwaukee Lutheran - I almost feel like a nut for making this pick, but something is telling me to do it. Not sure if it's ML's youth or what, but I smell something cooking.

Brown Deer at Whitnall - Whitnall is limited, let's get that straight. #1 had a monster game last week (still not sure I believe those numbers though), but let's take opponent into account. They still couldn't pass and defensively they got pushed around by WAC, only to be bailed out by penalties and fumbles. That said, BD seems to be improved...or is it just the rest of the East coming back to them? I think it's the latter, and I'm still not sure I buy a BD win just yet.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - Both S(/)Ms are taking care of most of their business and this is a matchup for placement in the East, but perhaps not much more. I think the Rockets have more firepower (of course they do, they're Rockets!) and that gets them over the Hound, er, hump in this one.

Pewaukee at West Allis Central - Pewaukee very much in danger of missing the playoffs? They'll get Pius and WAC, but they'll have to steal one and then win their crossover. Not sure I see that happening. Kinda crazy.

New Berlin Eisenhower at New Berlin West - Shields is well on his way to first-team all-state status. I have a hard time seeing the Vikings putting up anything against IKE's D. Himmelspach will have a big play or two on O and that'll be enough for IKE. Could get weird though, rivalry games are like that.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - I really don't think G'Dale has much to worry about here. WISCO's pretty average. Just execute (read: NO TURNOVERS) and the Panthers will be fine.

Cudahy at Pius XI - Cudahy's offense should have another huge game here and this will leave them two wins from the playoffs...still not sure they find that in the East with what's left of their schedule, but it is the wacky East so look for them to find three wins! 😆

The South Milwaukee v. Cudahy game will have playoff implications this year. Not the kind that it used to, now that the playoffs are watered down nearly as much as the talent level of both squads, but it's enough to worry an old Rocket. Cudahy nearly always seemed to find a way to come out on top in that game when the playoffs were at stake.

That said, Cudahy of 2018 isn't Cudahy of 1988 which means they'll only have something like eighteen people in their grandstand for the game... a really sad commentary on the state of affairs in the South Shore communities.

Week Five Matchups

Friday, 9/14

Greenfield at Milwaukee Lutheran - I kind of agree with DB.  There's a feeling that this is the week that Greenfield finally puts it together. Not because of anything special about the Hawks, but because this is the Woodland East and unpredictable stuff like that happens every season when teams up and down the standings lack cohesion, resources, offseason commitment, in-school head coaches and everything else the best programs have in spades. Even so, I'll sit tight with the chalk pick anyway.

Brown Deer at Whitnall - I'm picking the Brown Deer Brown Deer to steal one. Just a feeling. Haven't seen them in person, but the scorelines have been close week to week and it just feels like they're due.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer - Totally agree with everyone who feels the Rockets should take care of business here. The question is, can they? They lost big to the only credibly good team they've played (Burlington) and should have beaten the Red Lutherans but they didn't know how to close out a game yet. Beating Greenfield tells me they're starting to understand what that takes. Based on that, I feel pretty confident in this pick. Besides, it's not Week Six yet (i.e. the point in the season in SM where, on a semi-annual basis, several of the team's best players get caught drinking and wind up suspended for the playoff push).

Pewaukee at West Allis Central - If the Pirates miss the playoffs, it won't be because they lost to WAC. What's going on in Stallis, anyway? Is it true the whole youth program is now associated with Hale?

New Berlin Eisenhower at New Berlin West - Pretty sure I'd be tied for first in our standings if I picked Ike to win once in a while, but picking against them is just something I do. Not sure why. Maybe it's their ties to the inexplicably arrogant St. Charles Borromeo Parish... maybe it's because I always thought they were just an overrated small-school team back in high school... it's definitely not Melka's hyperbole which is one of my favorite reasons for coming back to this board every year... maybe it's because they hired the Cudahy Cannibal to coach their team in the pre-Kern era... maybe it's the wannabe-Michigan helmets which only look good in Ann Arbor... maybe it's just that they wear purple and gold. Whatever. One of these years they'll lose this rivalry game and I'll look like a prescient genius for picking West. It probably won't be this year, but don't count out the Vikings and the power of a special week when you're in high school. A hot start and a turnover or two is sometimes all it takes.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale -  I remember watching Wisco run all over Greendale in the playoffs even when the Panthers had some serious talent. It was kind of fun to watch Stoltz throwing temper tantrums in his orange hat after running roughshod through the Woodland. His teams couldn't block that attacking 4-4 and then, of course, the veer option just ran roughshod on a Greendale D that wasn't prepared for its strength or determination... man, those were the days. You look at Wisco now and you don't see a team that has sixty guys in the weight room year-round. Hell, you don't see a team with even close to sixty guys. Greendale will win this one and that's why. If Wisco wants to get back to winning, they need to get more guys out for the team and make sure all those guys are dedicated to their cause.

Cudahy at Pius XI - The sudden reappearance of competitive football in Packerland has surprised a lot of people. I'm honestly more surprised that they've found some kids to block for that young QB, because he's legit and while Cudahy has a successful powerlifting program, it boasts more girls than it does offensive linemen (or football players in general, as far as I can tell).

No. The youth programs are still separate. A friend of mine coaches in Hale's though, and he's not even certain of what person is in charge of WAC's this year. WAC also had to combine grade levels to field teams this year...😕

You may find this ironic, but any idea who beat the 1988 Cudahy team in the playoffs?

I think we all know it was IKE.

Any idea who beat IKE the next week on their way to a state runner-up finish that year? Somewhat relevant to this week. 😉

Greenfield at Milwaukee Lutheran: As much as I see Greenfield winning this, I think the Red Knights will get it done at home.

Brown Deer at Whitnall: Is Brown Deer getting better or is it that the East is so down this year? Whitnall's year has went down the tubes, they should make it two straight.

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer: Another toss up game. I see a tight game throughout with the Rockets pulling it out.

Pewaukee at West Allis Central: Ugh.....WAC is a total dumpster fire it seems. Pewaukee with all their issues right now will have no problems here.

New Berlin Eisenhower at New Berlin West: Seems the Woodland has several good matchups this week. IKE proved that they are still the top dogs in the West last week. They keep it rolling here.

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale: GDale has to be kicking themselves with all the offensive miscues last week against IKE. Here comes Wisco that is quite a bit better than last year but they find out that they have a ways to go before challenging the top teams in the West.

Cudahy at Pius XI: It's been a weird year. Cudahy could sneak their way into the playoffs but they need all the chips to fall their way. Pius just needs an entire program overhaul to get it back on track.

Greenfield at Milwaukee Lutheran - Greenfield over Milwaukee Lutheran. Greenfield should win this game but they should win a lot more games too. They had the talent to win the east div. last year but they didn’t and ended up at 5-6 somehow. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door.

Lutheran won this game in a rout last year and had 457 total yards. Their qb had a 153.7 qb rating in the game. Lutheran doesn’t have that kind of production at qb this year but teams seem to find a way to move the ball against Greenfield in the air and on the ground. Greenfield’s D looks real similar to the D played at WAC in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. They aren’t well schooled in the secondary and lack gap integrity up front. Lutheran isn’t as productive on O as they were last year, however.

It’s Greenfield’s to lose. The east is up for grabs and this is an opportunity for Greenfield. Greenfield is a couple plays away from being 0-4. Is Jim Morrison singing, “This is the End?"

Brown Deer at Whitnall - Brown Deer is bad grabs

South Milwaukee at Shorewood/Messmer
- SM can smell the east title

Pewaukee
at West Allis Central - A much needed opponent for Pewaukee

New Berlin Eisenhower
at New Berlin West
- I will take IKE this week. I haven’t gone against them much at all in recent years until last week. They were out gained badly but found a way to win. They play defense and stay in character on offense with an inexperienced group for the most part.

This game is sexier than we would have guessed in the preseason. NBW has not played anyone of note but has done their job. I think NBW will have tough sledding on O. Sean Crowley is a former detective but won’t need those skills to sniff out a 1 dimensional attack from NBW. NBW won’t be able to run with consistent success and I don’t think they can make plays in the air. IKE’s O is heavily committed to the run regardless of the outcome. Jim Crowley is a high ranking banking exec and will not be pressured into tossing the ball around simply for the sake of doing so. A wrinkle or two would not surprise this week though as Jim Crowley is more than just Burt Reynolds handsome. Kern was the coach of the week in WI and is another Madison Ave. type guy.

Spock will get plenty of carries as usual. Shields will need to be Jim Thorpe to some degree. Mark Shields had a pet rock.....He named it Earth.

Rivalry games mean the world to schools and there have been some fun ones between these 2 teams. I think back to 1989 when IKE had an absolutely loaded team and traveled to the old swamp at NBW. QB Jeff Pintar of NBW outplayed Matt Pierce and NBW pulled off a massive upset. Pierce threw several pics and many more near pics in addition to taking some unneeded sacks. NBW coach Doug Lange changed his defense for that game and told his team that they were going to dare IKE to throw the ball. Granger took the bait and IKE went home with the loss. I heard the Homecoming King for IKE the next year was a cross country runner instead of a football player. Granger overhauled the offense after the loss to NBW. IKE actually won a playoff game against WAC in 1989 with only 1 completion from Pierce as IKE was going to live on the ground. The power backfield of Dobner, White and Schopf was a safer way to live. Turn up the volume and enjoy a couple minutes of grainy video from a fun era:

Wisconsin Lutheran at Greendale - GD wins easy. We all know that a win over Wisco isn’t worth anything these days. GD was unable to beat Wisco when they mattered. GD will be fine until playoffs even if they are sulking about a weak showing against IKE.

You can’t turn the ball over 5 times and win against a stingy D. Stoltz will have to buy a ticket if he wants to go to the Woodland Conference Championship game. Do they get a rematch with IKE? Let’s see what division they end up in and how the draw looks. GD made the road more difficult for themselves. They are best as a frontrunner. When games get tight they don’t finish well. Maybe they should go to finishing school.

Cudahy
at Pius XI - Fryer versus Michalowski should be a good one.

Looks like Melka already beat me to it. NBW got their revenge in the playoffs after losing to IKE in the regular season in a 8-7 thriller.

I was actually trying to rebut Bosco's view of IKE as an overrated small school in the 80s (and I'm still trying to figure out what St. Charles Borromeo has/had to do with IKE) but I will go back to the shadows now... you guys know WAY more about this stuff than I do... I just cheer for IKE!
