Whitnall at West Allis Central - This will be close. Or it won't. Or....really, who the hell knows?

Brown Deer at Shorewood/Messmer - East might not have the best football right now...but the results are never to be taken for granted.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - Last week I'd have said "the hawks" all day long in this matchup. This week...

Milwaukee Lutheran
at Cudahy - I want to pick Cudahy. Why can't I pick Cudahy? Shouldn't I be picking Cudahy?

Pius XI "at" Wisconsin Lutheran - If we still did confidence points, this game would likely be everyone's highest confidence game.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee - Torn here...history favors the Pirates. Their kids played tough, and probably should have had two more TD's against the Panthers. NBW had a couple solid wins and a close one over Elkhorn...and it's that close one that gives me pause. Won't be surprised if NBW wins here, but would be if it's more than a two score game either way.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale - I pick the Panthers because it's what I do.

Week Four Matchups

Thursday, 9/6

Whitnall at West Allis Central - Let's find out just how far Whitnall has fallen this year.

Friday, 9/7

Brown Deer at Shorewood/Messmer - After losing to Cudahy, the Brown Deer Brown Deer suddenly look more threatening to Messwood in this meeting of the two northernmost Woodland teams.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - Homer pick. Also, Greenfield is bad.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - Red Lutherans put a damper on Cudahy's sudden resurgence.

Pius XI "at" Wisconsin Lutheran - Blue Lutheran fans get a kick out of beating a Catholic school... quietly ignoring the fact that Pius isn't Marquette or Memorial.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee - Just got a gut feeling here....

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale - Panthers are lining up for a run to Madison and this is their launching pad.

Game of Note

Slinger at Hartford - I'm not a believer in Slinger in the North Shore, but against this old WLT rival I will pick them.

Thursday, 9/6

Whitnall at West Allis Central - I was sitting around the fire last Friday night when I got a phone call from someone at the game informing me that WAC and Pius are "the two worst D1 teams in the state." I made sure to mention that this must be besides MPS, although I didn't mention that neither would likely fall into D1 in the miracle scenario of playoff qualification. I guess it's nice to beat Pius even without your best player, but I'm now thinking that might have been the last WAC win for a long time (we'll see about the crossovers). They will graduate a massive senior class and return just 10 or so juniors and a small handful of sophomores (no JV team either). Whitnall for their part looks bad, but not WAC bad. They can't be.

Friday, 9/7

Brown Deer at Shorewood/Messmer - S/M played pretty well against NBW into the fourth quarter, and Brown Deer stuck with an increasingly worse-looking Greenfield for that long as well. As NBW is a West team, that bodes better from S/M in this one.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - SM has to be fuming that they blew a 26-0 lead last week. Their AD hilariously didn't Tweet after the score was 26-0...and I'm not sure I blame him. SM couldn't stop the run, but GF has shown no semblance of being able to do that consistently. This game could turn into an aerial showdown, and after last week I give that edge to the Rockets.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy - The state of the East is such that Cudahy could be a fringe playoff team. Let that sink in. I expect there to be a lot of fireworks in this one and at least one 200-yard rusher.

Pius XI "at" Wisconsin Lutheran - WISCO is an average HS football team. Pius is nowhere near that. For one week anyway, it becomes old home week for the Vikings.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee - I, like others it would appear, am not feeling Pewaukee. Of course, this'll be the week they running clock NBW and make us all look the fool.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale - This has the makings of a low-scoring affair. I can see a defensive/special teams score playing a big role here. Greendale can beat you in a lot of different ways. IKE's defense will be up-to-the-task, but can they get one-or-two big momentum plays to again offset the fact that they've gotten very little offensive production outside of Himmelspach?

Game of Note

Slinger at Hartford - Hartford has not impressed thus far. Slinger lost Dodge and has scuffled offensively. What will give here?

Whitnall at West Allis Central: Got to believe that even Hale would've had their way with both WAC and Pius. Whitnall is having a nightmare of a season coming off their best season in program history. At least they get their first win of the year?

Friday, 9/7

Brown Deer at Shorewood/Messmer: Messmer hung tough with NBW while Brown Deer gave Greenfield a lot of trouble in losing efforts last week. Somehow I see this being a tight affair going to the home team.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield: Tells ya the sad state of the East this year. Though not all that impressive looking, SM has quietly become a contender for the division. Greenfield's performance has gone downward as of the last few weeks. SM wins a tight one on the road.

Milwaukee Lutheran at Cudahy: Cudahy nearly dropped 40 on Whitnall to end the losing streak......let THAT sink in. They need a bit of defense to stop Lutheran here.

Pius XI "at" Wisconsin Lutheran: This game will get out of hand quickly.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee: Kinda have to give the nod to the Pirates after NBW struggled against S/M last week.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale: Like DB, I see a low scoring affair here.

WAC averaged 8-9 yards a carry in this one, but penalties, turnovers and a leaky defense won't help ya.

Week Four Matchups

Thursday, 9/6

Whitnall at West Allis Central - A day late I would have picked Whitnall though.

Friday, 9/7

Brown Deer at Shorewood/Messmer - BD let one get away last week.

South Milwaukee at Greenfield - Greenfield over South Mil in a typical eastern division game. One of these 2 teams might have to play the winner from the West. GF can’t feel good about their execution last week against a weak Brown Deer team. Union Grove lost again. Joe Koch isn’t walking through that door. Tough times in Greenfield after optimism was at a fever pitch with Koch. Covington wasn’t the next coming, but there was some rhyme and reason to the offense and the defense came to compete. Greenfield has the talent to get it done even with sloppy and undisciplined play. I can’t decide if realignment for the 2 Woodland divisions would be a good or bad idea. I feel like the teams in the east continue to slide and are conditioned that it’s ok. The teams in the west have a tougher road to the playoffs, but might appreciate the bar being set higher.

Milwaukee Lutheran
at Cudahy - ML keeps rolling on

Pius XI "at" Wisconsin Lutheran - Wisco fall from grace is sad.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee - Pewaukee needs a win bad

New Berlin Eisenhower at Greendale - I will go with Greendale over IKE in a hard fought game. This is probably the only game in the Woodland that matters this regular season. Depending how things fall, these 2 teams could see each other in the post season. Greendale wants to declare that they are back and IKE wants to say that they still have some talented guys who know how to play the game.

Greendale is pretty balanced this year while IKE has been run heavy. This IKE offense resembles some of the old Granger teams which liked to play power football. Credit Jim Crowley for adapting to what he has instead of falling in love with a system. This feels like the old days of Pierce handing off to Dobner and playing good defense. Let’s be physical and let the other team make the mistakes. Spach got his yards last week, but yards won’t come as easy this week. The young qb will probably have to make a few throws to keep Greendale honest. Expect Stoltz to sell out against the run. Sean Crowley will emphasize tackling Sanchez and limiting him as a runner.

Mark Shields doesn’t take showers, he takes blood baths. Shields will need to be a force for IKE to win, he may even have to be Jim Thorpe - like. I might be inclined to take IKE in a post season rematch as I feel they will grow each week. We will see how good Greendale is and if they will be a factor beyond the Woodland. This is a huge pride game. Is Greendale back to high level football? Can IKE be a school that is going to consistently have a legit say in who wins the conference title and overcome the loss of good senior classes? Let’s find out soon. The Ricardo’s / Ferch’s combo tonight is an easy choice for dining. Will the Panther Pub be rocking late tonight or will the Varsity Club have a spirited celebration?
