East

Greenfield at Brown Deer - Greenfield has the two best playmakers in the East. That is gonna carry them to victories, which oughta tell you what state the division is in this year.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee - The nice thing about the general mediocrity of the division is the parity that comes along with it. This could be a decent tilt, but I like the Red Knights as they're probably the closest thing to a balanced team this division has.

Cudahy at Whitnall - Cudahy came oh-so-close to grabbing a win last week. Whitnall struggled with ML, scoring two non-offensive TDs (if memory serves correct) to keep the scoreline tight. I'm going with Whitnall. Until Cudahy proves they can beat someone other than Brown Deer that will be the case.

Crossover

Shorewood/Messmer at New Berlin West - This could be a running clock. Very underwhelming performance from the co-op last week, whereas West showed up, punched Pius in the mouth and then was able to clock out for nearly the entirety of the second half.

West

West Allis Central at Pius XI - Pius is not good. The result against Park really speaks to that. But they at least look the part of a football team out there. WAC, man, IDK. Seems they're capable of one big play a week, but that's about it. That doesn't get you wins against anybody.

Pewaukee at Greendale - If the first two weeks are any indicator it's that this is a bit of a rebuilding year for the Pirates. That doesn't bode well for a team that has taken care of business in the first two weeks like it's old home week.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin Eisenhower - WISCO had a very workmanlike performance in dismantling inferior competition last week. A step in the right direction, but that is likely to stall this week. IKE offensively has not put up numbers even remotely close to resembling last year's, but the defense has picked up right where it left off with All-State caliber Mark Shields making plays all over the place.

Week Three Matchups

East

Greenfield at Brown Deer - It's hard to pick the Brown Deer Brown Deers over anyone, but honestly, I feel the same way about Greenfield. This will be a different game in a couple years but for now, the "Hustlin' Hawks" have the upper hand.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee - I know a lot less about SM than I used to, but I hear they've gone back to running the same RPO stuff that everyone else is using. That's fine until you run into someone faster and more athletic than you are. Looks like the Red Knights are faster and more athletic than anyone else in the East this year.

Cudahy at Whitnall - Could the Packers surprise a Whitnall team that has yet to find its identity? It would be great to see them build off that close one against Messwood, but until they prove it I can't justify picking them.

Crossover

Shorewood/Messmer at New Berlin West - Ugly, these crossovers this season will be.  But apparently the Woodland admins wanted it this way, so reap what you sow, I guess.

West

West Allis Central at Pius XI - Pius just seems to have more spirit and togetherness right now. What's happening in West Allis with the Central/Hale split in youth programs-- not just football but other sports too-- really disappoints me.

Pewaukee at Greendale - Panthers better not catch themselves looking forward to Eisenhower.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin Eisenhower - I really hate picking Ike, but every year Wisco is removed from Denoyer is another reminder of what a good coach the guy was.

Game of Note

University School at St. Francis - St. Francis has to turn some of this success vs the rest of the small private schools of the MWCC into a win vs Lake Country Lutheran soon or it will really start to feel empty.

Greenfield at Brown Deer - Greenfield has some pieces; but not enough to be a contender. They'll build some confidence this week.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee - ML might not be the darkhorse to win the east...they might be blatant favorites depending on how they do here.

Cudahy at Whitnall - Cudahy surprised last week, giving messwood all they could handle. Or did the Packers take advantage of a team that had written them off? In any event, Whitnall's not-embarrassing showing last week makes the pick seem like the smart one.

Shorewood/Messmer at New Berlin West - Messwood seems to have been exposed last week...they seemed to have lost by barely winning a game I thought would be a gimme. Was it front-running? The Vikings will help us find out here.

West Allis Central at Pius XI - I don't know if this is a smart pick. Trying to gain ground where able.

Greendale at Pewaukee - Game is @ Pewaukee. Pewaukee struggles but has a good coaching staff who'll scheme to put their players in position to win.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin Eisenhower - Wisco will get a couple shots that gets the champ's attention. In the end, Ike will do what it needs to do to win.

Game of Note
University School at St. Francis- USM doesn't inspire confidence here...loosing the way they did to GDML, and losing to Catholic Central. But it's not like the Mariners have run the gauntlet of NC opponents either. I went back and forth on this, as I do think it could be a close one. If it's a blowout, it will be all SF.

In fairness to SF, you could argue LCL is one of the top teams in the area regardless of division...it's probably a good thing that re-alignment plan is in the offing...not sure when LCL would next lose a Midwest Classic game otherwise.

You could, but I am not sure I'd buy in. Right now LCL is the top dog in their conference and you always want to beat that top dog. It reminds me more of Hartford's situation in the WLT during Wisco's run of state titles.  They had a number of good teams, won their share of playoff games, but could never pass Homestead in D1 to get to state-- and couldn't do more than tie Wisco for the conference crown.

To your point, meanwhile, I think LCL would find tough sledding against a mid-level D2 or D1 school (think Falls, Sussex Hamilton or Burlington), let alone a D3 power like Ike, Greendale or CMH. They might be able to pull it out on a good day, but it would definitely be viewed as an upset. I'd put Racine St. Cat's in a similar class. St. Francis, though, would almost certainly struggle against any of those schools... so I see what you're saying. I just don't think it absolves STF of not beating LCL. They have to believe they can win that game one of these years (and I tend to agree).

Greenfield at Brown Deer - Greenfield will handle Brown Deer. The benefits of living in the Woodland East will save the season for the underachieving Gfield team. The running clock shortened the horror film last week. Oh, Union Grove lost again, the team Gfield couldn’t beat the last 2 years. GF isn’t ready to play on either side of the ball but doesn’t have to play anybody good until the playoffs. Sanchez was 7 for 7 against the GF secondary and ran through tacklers. Not any guidance there. The GF offense is poor too. This is the same show that took place at WAC. Time is limited.

Stoltz didn’t need validation in the context of this match up, but got it anyway. GF fans can’t get Joe Koch out of their heads and what might have been. It’s amazing where things are currently at, it’s just inept. GF scored on a Hail Mary and lateral on the last play of the game. It prevented a shutout, but didn’t save face. GF will make the playoffs because teams in the east have to.

Milwaukee Lutheran
at South Milwaukee - Winner earns a shot at the mighty Greenfield for the Woody East Title.

Cudahy at Whitnall - Whitnall is bad.

Crossover

Shorewood/Messmer at New Berlin West - West over east is no brainer.

West

West Allis Central at Pius XI - When will WAC play Hale again?

Pewaukee at Greendale - Greendale will beat Pewaukee. Pewaukee will play better and play to win, but won’t be able to do anything consistently enough to make this a second half game. Greendale will have IKE on their minds and that’s fine. Greendale is on the climb. They aren’t great, but they are real solid already.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin Eisenhower - IKE is a solid work in progress. They are playing good D. DC Sean Crowley (who used to befuddle former IKE QB Matt Pierce in the rec leagues for many years) has his guys playing hard and smart. When Mark Shields enters a room, he doesn't turn the lights on, he turns the dark off. He continues to be Jim Thorpe. IKE got another td by one of their lineman. These guys are almost as versatile as I was. Pewaukee couldn’t get much offense at all going, 81 yards of offense won’t do it. They made mistakes, but credit IKE for some of that. IKE is a run dominant team again and bringing their lunch pail to the sidelines. Spach will get his yards this week.

It will be hard to focus on this game with Greendale looming, but it simply won’t matter. I’m saving the pregame meal for next week and might even sneak up north if the weather is good because Wisco isn’t worth watching anymore.

East

Greenfield at Brown Deer: Greenfield should tame the struggling Falcons here. The East is still a mess and a half at this point.

Milwaukee Lutheran at South Milwaukee: At this point it looks like a possible three team race in the East with Lutheran, Greenfield, and Shorewood perhaps. South Milwaukee? Not so much.

Cudahy at Whitnall: Cudahy gave Shorewood everything and then some last week. Really unsure how this Whitnall team had the sudden dropoff in talent this year but they should win here. Keyword on should.

Crossover

Shorewood/Messmer at New Berlin West: It could be a tossup or it could be a blowout either way West wins.

West

West Allis Central at Pius XI: WAC gets win number one here in probably a blowout.

Pewaukee at Greendale: Not sure what to make of this Pewaukee squad yet. May have to take a look here against Greendale.

Wisconsin Lutheran at New Berlin Eisenhower: WISCO looks better compared to last year but IKE looks like they are on a collision course with Greendale.
