New Berlin West at Pius XI - Nothing about Week 1's game bodes well for the Popes moving forward. The question of program survival continues to be an annoying gnat buzzing around everyone's heads. NBW squeaked by the bottom feeder of the SLC, that counts for something, though it isn't that much.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - The East's results from last week speak for themselves. None rung louder than Whitnall's. I clearly misread what was going on at their scrimmage. My apologies to anyone taking my word for it. Milwaukee Lutheran for their part didn't get embarrassed by a very good Kewaskum program. Looking at the East, gotta think it's a two-horse race between the "firepower" offenses of ML and Greenfield.

South Milwaukee at Brown Deer - It was uglier for the Rockets in Week 1 than for Brown Deer, but caliber of opponent has to be taken into account too. Have to think SM will show better here, but in this division who knows. It's probably a pipe dream, but I'd like to see BD do something this year.

Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy - This'll probably be a close game all things considered. King may turn out to be closer to King of 2-3 years ago this year, but a 6-point win for the co-op isn't that much to write home about. Cudahy got crushed by one of the top small schools in the area...but still a small school, nonetheless.

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - IKE wasn't exactly a juggernaut in Week 1, but got the big plays from their top players and the defense created turnovers...always a recipe for success. Pewaukee founds themselves having to rally against Riverside...apparently really having trouble with Riverside's speed. The role of Chris Sykes this week will be played by Jack Himmelspach, and he'll have an even better supporting cast.

West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran - I really, really don't wanna talk about WAC. Feel bad for the Martin kid, a good running back stuck in a bad program that continues to put no priority on things that get you wins, like discipline and defense. WISCO for their part weren't embarrassed by Oak Creek this year, but still struggled with their athleticism. This was a four-score game a year ago, but an absolute grinder in every sense of the word. Might be a six- or seven-score game this time around.

Crossover

Greenfield at Greendale - Greendale got it done in Week 1 thanks to some big plays and a defense that bottled LGB's 'bone attack for the first time in awhile. Greenfield, outside of the aerial threat of Rosario, didn't get much done against UG. This one may be finished by halftime, sad to say.

Game of Note

Arrowhead at Muskego - The way Marquette controlled AHS at the LOS was scary...especially considering we're a good decade removed from anything resembling Smash 'em Basham football from the Hilltoppers. Muskego will be a whole 'nother animal. Heck, last year they running clocked 'em at Arrowhead. Looking at Arrowhead's schedule, it's not inconceivable they go 0-4 to start the year. I can't imagine that'll sit well with that community.

New Berlin West at Pius XI - NBW score last week was closer than I thought...and it's too early to gauge if it's a better elkhorn team or the vikings hurt from graduation losses.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - I want to think that Whitnall was caught off guard by a state contending D4 team, with a stud running back who's only gotten better. If it's that they struggled with athleticism, they'll likely be hurting again this week.
South Milwaukee at Brown Deer - Toss up (-ish)
Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy - Not a toss up (-ish)

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - Was Riverside that good? They looked pretty sharp in the scrimmage so I have to believe it; the corollary won't bode well for the Pirates.
West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran - Wisco saved face from last year's showing against OC. WAC needs a decent showing in this game.

Crossover

Greenfield at Greendale - The hawks seem to have the pieces in place for a potent O as the season progresses. Familiarity of the staff and longtime school rivalry made for a tight start in last year's game, the final score not reflecting the competitiveness of the first 3 quarters. Per usual, my confidence is in the Panthers winning...but the journey should be interesting.

New Berlin West at Pius XI - Thought NBW would win bigger, might not be able to keep up with top have of the West yet.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran -  If you jump to conclusions after week 1, could ML be the new favorite in the East?
South Milwaukee at Brown Deer - Format and the East could make the Rockets a playoff team.
Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy - Hope this is competitive but I am not sure it will be.

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - Big game early in the West, big plays keep Ike ahead in this one.
West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran - Wisco and NBW are probably playing the 3rd spot in the West.

Greenfield at Greendale - Feeling like this game won't be close.

Week Two Matchups

Thursday, 8/23

New Berlin West at Pius XI - In 1991, our "Team USA-Milwaukee" team went to England after the season to play the British Junior National squad in equipment we rented from Pius.  Naturally, we lost. This had more to do with our head coach selling us out to the Brits than the modern equipment Pius lent us, which was actually pretty nice, but in hindsight it was a sign of things to come in Popeland. This was in the days of the Metro Conference when the Popes could contend for a third-place finish behind MUHS and Memorial. I'm not sure they could beat Dominican right now.  Pius needs to send a delegation up to Appleton Xavier and study how those guys built their program.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - Two weeks, two Lutheran schools, two losses for Whitnall? It wouldn't surprise me.

South Milwaukee at Brown Deer - BHS beat the Rockets with size. The Brown Deer Brown Deer won't be able to do that. SM could use the confidence boost.

Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy - St. Cat's could go undefeated in the Woodland East, no problem, so this one might be closer than people expect. Just hard to see the Packers beating anyone right now.

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower - Ike won last week and will be favored against everyone but Greendale in this conference. I have a sneaky feeling that Riverside is better than people think, though, and the Pirates' experience in that close win will help them here.

West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran - I guess Wisco's returning experience isn't worth as much as I thought it would be. Hard to see them hanging with Ike or Greendale right now-- but they can beat WAC easy.

Crossover

Greenfield at Greendale - Greendale won't miss a beat here.

Game of Note

Arrowhead at Muskego -  Looks like Muskego has those second and third options they need to be a serious threat again this year. Meanwhile, Arrowhead really wasn't bad against Marquette-- without turnovers, that game had the potential to be a lot closer-- but they clearly lack playmakers again this year. I think they're going to struggle in 2018, not just against Muskego but in a number of games on their calendar.

New Berlin West at Pius XI: Putting up only 13 against a struggling Elkhorn team gives me pause for this NBW's team's outlook this year. But they should not have any issues here against Pius.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran: Feels like a pick I am going to get burned on regardless on who I choose. At least ML kept it competitive against Kewaskum.

South Milwaukee at Brown Deer: Could be a close game or could be a big SM win here.

Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy: Another winless season for the Packers here? Could be so.

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower: IKE grounded down Plymouth last week. Pewaukee needed a second half rally to beat what could be a very strong Riverside team. IKE pulls away here.

West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran: WISCO kept it competitive against a solid OC team last week. WAC got blown out by Tremper. Vikings win running away here.

Crossover

Greenfield at Greendale: Nice win for G-Dale last week against Badger. They shouldn't have much issue here against a Greenfield team that struggled to get points up against a UG team.

New Berlin West at Pius XI: Thursday night thriller.

Friday, 8/24

East

Whitnall at Milwaukee Lutheran - Whitnall stunk up the joint last week.
South Milwaukee at Brown Deer - Woody East classic
Shorewood/Messmer at Cudahy - Messwood goes 2-0.

West

Pewaukee at New Berlin Eisenhower -  IKE will sneak by Pewaukee. For years, Pewaukee had IKE’s number but that has changed. IKE was in a dogfight last week until Mark Shields returned a pic for a td. This guy is versatile like Jim Thorpe. The chief export of Mark Shields is pain. He plays both sides of the ball and he punts.

IKE didn’t run wild and the stats had them with only 1 completion. They are a work in progress and lost a ton of talent. Pewaukee got a scare last week and had to rally to win. Word on the street is Riverside was the fastest teams around. I think this will be low scoring as both teams will stick to the ground. Both teams really need this one as I keep hearing that Greendale is the team to beat in the Woody this year.

A late meeting will prevent a pregame meal this week. Check in next week.

West Allis Central at Wisconsin Lutheran - Wisco wins easy.

Crossover

Greenfield at Greendale -Greendale will beat Greenfield. This will be like Belichick going up against one of his old assistants with the usual result. Guys on different levels….This would have had heavy spice if Joe Koch were still at Greenfield. Greenfield fans had so much excitement about Joe. This was a competitive game last year but Greenfield doesn’t know how to close. They lost to Union Grove for the second year in a row. They averaged .7 yards per rush last week. Koch beat Greendale in the conference championship game a few years ago and lived running the ball. They were physical and well schooled.

Greendale won in week 2 last year after losing to Badger. Other than a loss to IKE, Greendale ran the table until losing to a good Bay team in the playoffs. Greendale improved throughout the year and found ways to win with a young team and modest talent. Meanwhile, Greenfield went 4-6 despite having 6 guys that committed to play college football. They were big and fast but very undisciplined. They found ways to lose Woodland East games and then got a gift with an MPS team in round 1 of the playoffs. Then they played Brookfield Central in level 2. Jed played every kid he suited up and sat down his qb in the second quarter with a 41-0 lead. Greenfield completed 1 pass that night and only had 2 yards rushing in the first half.

I don’t see this being a good border war rivalry at any point if the current staffs remain the same. Stoltz gets results. Greendale will be looking ahead and it won’t matter this week. They are playing for a seed and hoping to be in D3.

Game of Note

Arrowhead at Muskego - Muskego is trying to make their case as the best team in the area.

I think all of SE Wisconsin misses Joe Koch. He was a convenient foil and a guy everyone loved to beat (and very few people could). People who liked him swore by him and people in adjoining districts hated how kids would move just to play for him. He had a basic formula for winning but he adjusted it every year based on what he had in the cupboard and what new trends he could take advantage of. Love him or hate him, you had to respect his results. Prep football around here isn't the same without him. It's just a shame he never won that elusive state title before heading south to Texas. Anyone know how he's doing down there?

Good catch.  Caught me sleeping on that one.  I was thinking so much about Oak Creek that I completely forgot about Dominican's early-90s run.

And yes, while that Dominican team probably wasn't one of them, there were a number of WISAA champs over the years that would have given the WIAA champs of similar divisions a run for their money.

Final

Probably would have been a running clock at halftime if not for an 8-minute march by Pius in the second quarter...the Vikings got there anyway early in the second half.

Interested to see how he fares as a head man down Texas way.

Honestly, I think it's all he ever wanted.

Does SE Wisconsin miss him? Eh. To the extent of turning around moribund programs by infusing a serious approach to the game, and using the most basic but effective offensive styles around to do it (even when everybody was going spread and chucking it around), yeah, he's missed.

However, his legacy in Wisconsin will always be defined by late 90s, early 2000s Thug U AKA Oak Creek. How much he had to do with the peripherals that went along with that program (the image, the propaganda, the heavily-rumored Creatine cabinet, the criminality, the shady transfers) we'll perhaps never know, but that program left a bad taste in a lot of folks' mouths, one that is unlikely to ever be removed.

In the eyes of many, the fact that that program never won a State Title (god bless what used to be the powerhouse WVC), is the single greatest karmic occurrence in Wisconsin Prep Sports history.
