Grafton at New Berlin Eisenhower - I think IKE might be in for a bit of a dogfight here, not that they won't win in the end as they are the better team, just that Grafton is playing really well right now. I get the feeling this is one of those "couple of long TD runs by Himmelspach and a defensive TD" kind of games for the Lions.

Pewaukee at Mount Horeb/Barneveld - MH/B had a tough game with Berlin in L1 and that tells me this one could be closer than expected as well. Still, beating a Rock Valley team is a whole different animal than beating a perennial Badger-South contender.

Plymouth at Greendale - So many points conceded by G'dale last week. I just don't know where this team is at right now, and that makes this pick a tough one for me. Plymouth always seems to give IKE a hard time, so I'm kinda inclined to believe they'll do the same to G'dale...difference is, Greendale doesn't have IKE's resolve at this point in time.

Games of Note

East Troy at Catholic Memorial - ET's QB is a pretty good dual threat, though they rarely throw. NBW kept them at bay early but the Trojans just kept coming at 'em and eventually Dessart started to find creases and got the big runs. Problem is, while that approach may work in the Rock Valley and against a middle-of-the-pack Woodland-West team, it is not likely to get the job done against the larger and faster Crusaders. ET is physical themselves on defense and might be able to slow CMH a bit...so maybe the score stays more respectable than expected.

Racine Horlick at Oak Creek - OC beat a wounded Horlick team on the slow track at Horlick Field a few weeks ago. Now they're getting a healthy Horlick team on the turf at home. I think the fortunes are turned and the Rebels get the one-score win this time around.

Mayville at Lake Country Lutheran - LCL had a workmanlike performance against Marshall last week and it's gonna be much of the same here against a rather one-dimensional Mayville team.

Watertown at Homestead - This one could turn into a track meet. Or it could be a blowout. In either case only one of these teams comes out victorious. Homestead also got their #1 QB back for the first time since last year's playoffs last week, so they're only getting stronger. Uh-oh to everyone else in D2.

Hartford at Slinger - Slinger dropped the first match between these two but had not hit their stride at that point of the year either. The Owls really seem to be hitting their groove now. It'll be interesting to see what, if any, affect the weather has on Hartford's passing game (which is their X-factor). Last week's conditions pretty much shut it down and they rode Savage with 39 carries. Could set up an interesting RB dual between him and Lightheizer.

Grafton at New Berlin Eisenhower - I do agree that this game will be a tough one for IKE. IKE has the experience here, but sometimes I feel that can be a little bit of a detriment...giving one a false sense of security or a sense that the outcome of the game is almost a forgone conclusion. But both teams playing to their potential, IKE should win.

Pewaukee at Mount Horeb/Barneveld - If MHB was more of a run first squad, I'd be inclined to give Pewaukee a better shot here...

Plymouth at Greendale - Wow that was a close one last Friday. Not really sure what happened, if something broke down, or if there was some wrinkle the Panthers couldn't adjust to or what. Probably twice during the night I started the process of being ok with a loss and moving on, but then GDHS kept coming back, thankfully. Plymouth is a much much better squad that Wisco was, so the panthers can't afford to make too many mistakes...I'm not ready for FB to end here at the G.

Grafton at New Berlin Eisenhower - Grafton is certainly more battle-tested than the typical Woodland foe steamrolled by Eisenhower this year. I don’t think that’s going to be enough, however, the result of this game should give everyone a much better measure of just how far this Ike team can/can’t go.

Pewaukee at MHB - Two factors are working against picking the Pirates here.  The first is overall conference strength and the second is their own record against playoff teams.

Plymouth at Greendale - Not sure if Panther fans have reason to be concerned, or if Wisco’s offense finally delivered in the last two weeks on the promise I felt they had going into this year. I feel more like the latter, and not just as a matter of CYA. This should be a good game but I think Greendale has enough to win it.

Games of Note

East Troy at Catholic Memorial - CMH is big, strong, fast and explosive like nothing East Troy has seen all year. The Trojans won’t be overawed and they’ll give it their best shot, but four quarters of the Crusaders will wear them down. I think this gets out of hand in the second half after staying tight through the first two quarters. Also, I may just save this paragraph and reuse it next week.

Racine Horlick at Oak Creek - The Knights aren’t up to Koch-era levels but as a program, they’re consistently a cut above Horlick. That depth carried them in the first meeting and ought to propel them into the quarterfinals.

Mayville at Lake Country Lutheran - My, how a couple decades changes everything. Did LCL even exist when Mayville was winning state titles?

Watertown at Homestead - Moving conferences seems to have elevated things at Watertown, which is great to see. Too often teams take a step back in that scenario. Their common results against Bay would seem to indicate this would be a close one, but... it’s Homestead. I just don’t see the Highlanders stumbling here.

Hartford at Slinger - I’ve been a skeptic in regard to the Owls all year. Hartford validated that skepticism earlier this season, but they’ve taken a few dings since. Slinger, meanwhile, seems to have kept improving. I’ll take the team that finished stronger.

OK.

Riebau was the #1 all last year and then didn't play at all until starting apparently in Level 1.

What's the scoop?

Grafton at New Berlin Eisenhower - I was hiking in the mountains last week Thursday and had tech issues, so I couldn’t post. For the record, I had every game right other than Pewaukee pulling off the upset. I wasn’t excited about Woodland rematches and may have protested by not picking anyway.

I like IKE over Grafton. Grafton is a nice, little story but it ends there. Their resume is not impressive. IKE essentially had a bye week with Cudahy. In 1988 IKE and Cudahy had a wild playoff game. IKE qb Matt Pierce dug a big hole for IKE before getting knocked out of the game. Dave Langenohl came off the bench and led IKE to a comeback win. IKE is prepping for level 3. Mark Shields had to stop washing his clothes in the ocean. The tsunamis were killing people. IKE continues to try and get better. Can Greendale advance for the rematch?

Pewaukee at Mount Horeb/Barneveld - Pewaukee won't survive this week.

Plymouth at Greendale - I will take Greendale over Plymouth, I guess. GD has been sluggish, there are issues in GD. They really labored in their victory over the artist formerly known as Wisconsin Lutheran. Who could forget the 2016 game that GD lost to Plymouth 31-7? GD turned the ball over constantly and gave up over 300 yards rushing. They have enough talent to win this week if they have their heads on straight. They believe they can handle IKE if they meet again. They need to earn that opportunity and show that they still matter.

Games of Note

East Troy at Catholic Memorial - CMH easy.
Racine Horlick at Oak Creek - Winner here gets a MUHS beatdown.
Mayville at LakeCountry Lutheran - LCL is walking distance from my house, When Ike hits 35-0 I will head home and maybe catch the end of this ball game.
Watertown at Homestead - Homestead will grind them.
Hartford at Slinger Hartford in a close one.

Side Note

Shame on Greenfield for not playing a 10th game. They needed to play a respectable opponent and keep working. The Milwaukee Lutheran forfeit situation really gave GF a break in the crossover match up. Instead of being 2-7 , they got a free handout (and a false sense of everything) in WAC. It’s almost criminal to sneak off stage in that circumstance. It will be interesting to see what happens with the program. Results haven’t been on par with the talent.

Weeden transferred to Homestead from Brown Deer a couple years ago, where he had been their quarterback since middle school.

I know that (Boy, he'd have done wonders for this BD team).

However, didn't Weeden start at safety last year? Riebau had a pretty good year and then didn't play much at all until Level 1 this year where he apparently assumed QB duties (full stats weren't reported, but he had a 1st quarter rushing TD and a 3rd quarter TD pass to a starter). Was Weeden just filling in for him because of an injury/suspension or what? Or did he win the #1 job and just sat L1 due to poor opposition? I can only go with what I know and I haven't heard anything to the contrary. I'm not doubting you. Guess we find out more tonight.
