The tourney kicks off tomorrow, so I'll start the thread and try to maintain updates throughout the month-long event.

-Big news this morning as the joint bid of the U.S., Canada and Mexico won the right to host the expanded 2026 World Cup, handily beating Morocco despite their being some consternation in the lead-up on how tight the vote would be. The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 games in the 48-team tournament and all quarterfinals, semis and the final will be held within our borders.

-In other shocking news, one of the prohibitive favorites, Spain, fired their coach this morning after it was announced he would be Real Madrid's new top man.

I know next to nothing when it come to soccer.  Why was the coach fired?  It seems very odd to do that when you're one of the favorites.

http://www.espn.com/soccer/spain/story/3524002/julen-lopetegui-sacked-by-spain-before-world-cup-after-taking-real-madrid-job

In a news conference at Spain's training base in Krasnodar, Russia, Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales said Lopetegui's fate was sealed just two days ahead of the team's World Cup opening game, as Rubiales could not accept an Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) employee having negotiated his next job without informing his employers.

"We have been obliged to fire the national coach," Rubiales said Wednesday. "We wish him the best, he has done an excellent job in getting us to the tournament. But the federation cannot be left outside the negotiation of one of its employees, and find out just five minutes before a public announcement. If anybody wants to talk to one of our employees, they have to speak to us, too. That is basic, as this is the team of all Spaniards. The national team is the most important we have; the World Cup is the biggest of all."

Final

The opening match in Group A saw the hosts get out to an early lead, and then keep their foot on the gas to punish the lowest-ranked side in the tourney.

Group A:

Uruguay 1
Egypt 0

Jose Gimenez headed home an 89th minute winner, as Egypt could not hold out to the end with star Mo Salah on the bench.

Group B:

Iran 1
Morocco 0

Appeared headed for our first scoreless draw of the tourney until a wayward headed clearance by Morocco found it's way into their own net at the death. Iran's first WC win since 1998 against *sigh* the U.S.

Spain 3
Portugal 3

A wild match that lived up to its billing as the match of the group stage. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo curled in a late free kick to cap off his hat trick and grab a point cancelling out a brace from Diego Costa and a Nacho wonder strike.

Group C:

France 2
Australia 1

Technology helped France to a victory over the Socceroos, with VAR awarding a penalty (converted by Antoine Griezmann) to Les Bleus and then confirming Paul Pogba's late header off the crossbar crossed the goal line.

Group D:

Argentina 1
Iceland 1

Iceland quickly answered an early Sergio Aguero goal with one from Alfred Finnbogason, survived a penalty kick by Lionel Messi and held for a huge point. Argentina looking very shaky.

Group C:

Denmark 1
Peru 0

Peru dominated the proceedings but missed a PK and couldn't convert any other chances as the Danes stole three points.

Group D:

Rather dry affair that saw Croatia ease to a W on the back of an own goal and a PK.

Group E:

Serbia 1
Costa Rica 0

Serbia controlled the proceedings but needed a spectacular free kick from Aleksandar Kolarov to defeat the ever-pesky Ticos.

Brazil 1
Switzerland 1

Philippe Coutinho curled home a nice shot from outside the box in the 20th minutes, but the Swiss scored off a corner kick early in the second half and were just able to keep the Brazilians at bay and grab a point.

Group F:

Mexico 1
Germany 0

Hoo boy. The Germans did not look good nor motivated. The Mexicans, in their typical fashion, generated a ton of chances but were wasteful, except for one chance that Hirving Lozano buried, and that's all they would need. Winning this group would be big because second place will likely see Brazil in the Round of 16.

Group F:

Sweden 1
South Korea 0

Andreas Grandqvist converted a VAR-awarded penalty as Sweden took all the spoils in this rather drab affair.

Group G:

Belgium 3
Panama 0

After being held scoreless for the first-half, the vaunted Belgian attack got off the schneid via Dries Mertens spectacular volley early in the second and added two goals from Romelu Lukaku top cruise to an easy three points.

England 2
Tunisia 1

England came out well against a Tunisian high line and got an early goal as Harry Kane rebounded home a save off a John Stones' header. Tunisia converted a PK off what was a soft penalty in my view later in the half and it remained tied as Tunisia dropped back defensively in the second half, until Kane headed home a Harry Maguire header off a corner in the 91st minute and avoided a frustrating result.

Group H:

Japan 2
Colombia 1

Japan becomes the first Asian nation to defeat a South American nation at a World Cup. This one got off to a rousing start with Colombia's Carlos Sanchez picking up the second fastest red card in WC history  in the 3rd minute for a handball in the box. Colombia was able to equalize but Japan scored a 72nd minute to secure a famous victory.

Senegal 2
Poland 1

Group H saw both favorites get upset as an own goal and incredibly fortunate (for Senegal) return the field of an injured player led to a breakaway goal to down the favored Poles.

Group A:

Russia 3
Egypt 1

Egypt talisman Mo Salah returned to the lineup but the Russians scored three times in relatively quick succession early in the second half while the Pharaohs could only muster a consolation Salah PK. Russia all but assures itself of a place in the second round, while Egypt has to sweat out tomorrow's Uruguay/Saudi Arabia result to see if they even have a remote chance of moving on.

Group A:

Uruguay 1
Saudi Arabia 0

A very dull affair which saw a Luis Suarez first-half goal hold up as Russia and Uruguay advance to the second round. Sauid Arabia and Egypt are eliminated.

Group B:

Portugal 1
Morocco 0

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a header off a corner kick in the fourth minute and it seemed the rout was on, but Morocco actually controlled the rest of the game but simply could not finish any of their chances.

Spain 1
Iran 0

Spain dominated the proceedings but Iran's bunker was stout, only a deflection that rocketed into the net off Spain striker Diego Costa's shin could break the deadlock. Iran thought they had equalized shortly thereafter, but the goal was correctly ruled offside.

Group C:

Denmark 1
Australia 1

An early Christian Eriksen strike was cancelled out by Mile Jedinak's second PK of the tourney as the spoils were shared, and both teams remain alive.

France 1
Peru 0

Peru once again showed decently but left with nothing to show for it as a Kylian Mbappe tap-in eliminated them.

Group D:

Croatia 3
Argentina 0

Argentina looks a disaster as a fluffed clearance by the goalie led to the first goal and three guys stood around and watched Croatia score their third. Luka Modric scored the second on a wonder strike from 25 yards. Lionel Messi had just 49 touches for the entire match. Argentina still has a chane to make the knockout rounds, but an Iceland win tomorrow would do serious damage to those hopes.

Group D:

Nigeria 2
Iceland 0

An Ahmed Musa brace (including a fantastic control touch and finish on the first goal) puts the Icelanders in a must-win-and-pray situation heading into the last group stage match. A Gylfi Sigurdsson missed PK did not help their cause with goal differential.

Group E:

Brazil 2
Costa Rica 0

The Ticos held on 'til the dying moments and then Brazil broke through twice to break Costa Rican hearts.

Switzerland 2
Serbia 1

Our first comeback win of the torunament. Serbia took an early lead via an Aleksandar Mitrovic header. Granit Xhaka knotted it up with an absolute cracker from outside the box, and then the Swiss won it near the death when Xherdan Shaqiri finsihed on the break.

That Group G Belgium/Tunisia match was fun to watch. Romelu Lukaku and Edn Hazard each scoring two goals apiece. Game could have legit been 9-3.

Group F:

Mexico 2
South Korea 1

A professional performance from Mexico to get the three points. Carlos Vela converted a first half PK, and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez scored in the second while South Korea got a late consolation left-footed strike from Tottenham's Son Heung-Min.

Germany 2
Sweden 1

A German loss would have meant elimination for the title holders, and a draw would have kept them alive, but barely. Things were nervy at the half as despite German dominance, Sweden's Ola Toivonen was able to chip Manuel Neuer following a bad turnover to give the Swedes a shock lead. Marco Reus tied it up almost straight out of halftime, but it took until five minutes into stoppage time before Toni Kroos scored from a brilliant indirect free kick off the wing to give Die Mannschaft's tourney hopes a massive boost.
