Michigan

Baraga

Location: Baraga, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 158 (D7)
Nickname: Vikings
Conference: Great Western
Head Coach: Eric Demink
2013 Record: 0-9 (0-5)
Postseason: Did Not Qualify

Schedule

8/29 at Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)
9/5 at Hancock (MI)
9/12 vs Gogebic (MI)
9/19 vs North Central (MI)
9/26 vs L'Anse (MI)
10/3 at Hurley
10/10 at Forest Park (MI)
10/17 vs Houghton (MI)
10/24 vs Ontonagon (MI)

Comments: Once again the Vikings struggled with low numbers this year and finished winless for the second straight year. Baraga who is rumored to maybe heading toward 8-man football in the next few years is riding a 23 game losing streak. Their best shot to end the streak is in the season finale against former Great Western member Ontonagon who jumped to the local 8-man league in the UP.

Calumet

Location: Calumet, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 419 (D4)
Nickname: Copper Kings
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: John Croze
2013 Record: 2-7 (1-5)
Postseason: Did Not Qualify

Schedule

8/29 vs Northland Pines
9/5 vs Negaunee (MI)
9/12 at Ishpeming (MI)
9/19 at Houghton (MI)
9/26 vs Hancock (MI)
10/3 vs West Iron County (MI)
10/10 vs L'Anse (MI)
10/17 at Ironwood (MI)
10/24 at Gladstone (MI)

Comments: Calumet who has been a factor in the Western Peninsula Athletic Conference (West-PAC for short) had a down year being winless for most of the year but they won their last two games to finish 2-7. Once again the Copper Kings have to endure a early season gauntlet which includes four playoffs teams (one of which won the state title) if they want to get back into the postseason this upcoming year.

Forest Park

Location: Crystal Falls, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 167 (D7)
Nickname: Trojans
Conference: Great Western
Head Coach: TBD
2013 Record: 12-1 (5-0)
Postseason: Defeated Gogebic 30-16, Defeated L'Anse 16-9, Defeated North Dickinson 24-20, Lost to Beal City 34-18 in the Semifinals

Schedule

8/29 vs Bark River-Harris (MI)
9/5 at Norway (MI)
9/12 vs Hurley
9/19 OPEN
9/26 vs North Central (MI)
10/3 at North Dickinson (MI)
10/10 vs Baraga (MI)
10/17 at Gogebic (MI)
10/24 vs Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)

Comments: Forest Park will take the sidelines with a new head coach as Bill Santilli stepped down this year after leading the Trojans to 13 Great Western Conference titles, 10 district titles, 8 regional titles and seven trips to state (including six straight from 2004-2009) and a State Title compiling a 146-39 record at Forest Park. It won't be easy to replace Santilli, that's a given but whoever does will have a program that's always a threat to win the conference and make deep playoff runs.

Gogebic

Location: Bessemer, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 231 (D6) (Co-op between Bessmer and Wakefield-Marenscio 150+81)
Nickname: Miners
Conference: Great Western
Head Coach: Mark Mazzon
2013 Record: 6-4 (2-3)
Postseason: Lost to Forest Park 30-16 in the First Round.

Schedule

8/29 at Hancock (MI)
9/6 at Pardeeville
9/12 at Baraga (MI)
9/19 vs Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)
9/26 vs Hurley
10/3 OPEN
10/10 vs Comstock (MI)
10/17 vs Forest Park (MI)
10/24 vs Ironwood (MI)

Comments: The Miners made it back to the postseason again last year but were dealt a first round loss to the Great Western Champs Forest Park. They pick up a game against Pardeeville making the trip down to the central part of the state on 9/6.

Hancock

Location: Hancock, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 483 (D4) (Tri-op between Hancock, Chassell and Jeffers 276 + 66 +141)
Nickname: Bulldogs
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: Matt Walter
2013 Record: 3-6 (1-5)
Postseason: Did Not Qualify

Schedule

8/29 vs Gogebic (MI)
9/5 vs Baraga (MI)
9/12 at Northland Pines
9/19 at L'Anse (MI)
9/26 at Calumet (MI)
10/3 at Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)
10/10 vs Ironwood (MI)
10/17 vs West Iron County (MI)
10/24 at Houghton (MI)

Comments: Hancock could not grab the next gear and improve as they settled for their third straight 3-6 season. The Bulldogs have not made the postseason since 2006 while the conference win total has decreased over the last four seasons.

Houghton

Location: Houghton, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 426 (D4)
Nickname: Gremlins
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: Karl Borree
2013 Record: 6-4 (3-3)
Postseason: Lost to Menominee 63-6 in the First Round.

Schedule

8/29 at L'Anse (MI)
9/5 at Ishpeming Westwood (MI)
9/12 vs Ironwood (MI)
9/19 vs Calumet (MI)
9/26 at West Iron County (MI)
10/3 at Northland Pines
10/10 vs Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)
10/17 at Baraga (MI)
10/24 vs Hancock (MI)

Comments: Houghton had a breakout year and made the playoffs for the first time since 2001. Their six wins last season was equal to the amount of wins combined they had over the previous four seasons.

Ironwood

Location: Ironwood, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 254 (D5/D6)
Nickname: Red Devils
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: Dan Nemi
2013 Record: 0-9 (0-6)
Postseason: Did Not Qualify

Schedule

8/29 vs Hurley
9/5 vs Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore
9/12 at Houghton (MI)
9/19 at West Iron County (MI)
9/26 vs Northland Pines
10/3 vs L'Anse (MI)
10/10 at Hancock (MI)
10/17 vs Calumet (MI)
10/24 at Gogebic (MI)

Comments: Ironwood hit some hard times last year as they went winless. They play Hurley and the Washburn tri-op to start the season before diving into conference play.

Iron Mountain

Location: Iron Mountain, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 298 (D5)
Nickname: Mountaineers
Conference: Mid-Peninsula
Head Coach: Robin Mattilla
2013 Record: 4-5 (4-2)
Postseason: Did Not Qualify

Schedule

8/29 vs Ishpeming (MI)
9/5 vs Gwinn (MI)
9/12 at West Iron County (MI)
9/19 vs Negaunee (MI)
9/26 at Ishpeming Westwood (MI)
10/3 at Manistique (MI)
10/10 vs Kingsford (MI)
10/17 at Hurley
10/24 at Norway (MI)

Comments: One of the traditionally stronger teams in the UP, Iron Mountain suffered a down season last year. Last season a few streaks ended for them, one was a twelve year playoff streak. Another streak that ended was their 22 game on the field winning streak agains their rival West Iron County.

Kingsford

Location: Kingsford, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 546 (D3)
Nickname: Flivvers
Conference: Great Northern (MI)
Head Coach: Chris Hofer
2013 Record: 7-3 (2-2)
Postseason: Lost to Grayling 42-25 in the First Round.

Schedule

8/29 vs Lakeland
9/5 at DeWitt (MI)
9/12 vs Hopkins (MN)
9/19 at Cheboygan (MI)
9/26 vs Menominee (MI)
10/3 vs Marquette (MI)
10/10 at Iron Mountain (MI)
10/17 vs Gladstone (MI)
10/24 at Escanaba (MI)

Comments: Kingsford had another fine season en route to another postseason appearance. However they lost in the first round to a Grayling squad that was usually routed by Great Northern teams in the postseason. They also play host to Hopkins from Minnesota's strong Lake Conference as well this upcoming season.

L'Anse

Location: L'Anse, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 230 (D6)
Nickname: Purple Hornets
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: Andy Crouch
2013 Record: 8-3 (5-1)
Postseason: Defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 52-34, Lost to Forest Park 16-9 in the Second Round.

Schedule

8/29 vs Houghton (MI)
9/5 vs West Iron County (MI)
9/12 OPEN
9/19 vs Hancock (MI)
9/26 at Baraga (MI)
10/3 at Ironwood (MI)
10/10 at Calumet (MI)
10/17 vs Northland Pines
10/24 vs Munising (MI)

Comments: The Purple Hornets had another strong regular season finishing second in the West-PAC behind West Iron County. They moved to the second round of the playoffs but Forest Park got revenge after L'Anse handed them a rare first round loss by ending their season this time around.

Lake Linden-Hubbell

Location: Lake Linden, Michigan
14-15 Projected Enrollment: 163 (D7)
Nickname: Lakes
Conference: Great Western
Head Coach: Andy Crouch
2013 Record: 5-5 (3-2)
Postseason: Lost to L'Anse 52-34 in the First Round.

Schedule

8/29 vs Baraga (MI)
9/5 at Hurley
9/12 at North Central (MI)
9/19 at Gogebic (MI)
9/26 OPEN
10/3 vs Hancock (MI)
10/10 at Houghton (MI)
10/17 vs North Dickinson (MI)
10/24 at Forest Park (MI)

Comments: After a pair of non-playoff years the Lakes returned to the postseason last year. However their time in the playoffs was short as they were bounced by L'Anse in round one in a high scoring affair. Their first half of the season features three playoff teams in the first four games.

Menominee

Location: Menominee, Michigan
Projected 14-15 Enrollment: 532 (D3/D4)
Nickname: Maroons
Conference: Great Northern
Head Coach: Joe Noha
2013 Record: 13-1 (4-0)
Postseason: Defeated Houghton 63-6, Defeated Grayling 47-14, Defeated Standish-Sterling 49-27, Defeated Muskegon Oakridge 59-28, Lost to Grand Rapids West Catholic 27-14 in the State Finals.

Schedule

8/29 vs Antigo
9/5 OPEN
9/12 OPEN
9/19 vs Gladstone (MI)
9/26 at Kingsford (MI)
10/3 at Escanaba (MI)
10/10 OPEN
10/17 at Marinette
10/24 vs Marquette (MI)

Comments: The Maroons almost captured another state title last year but fell in the state finals to cap off another excellent season under year two of the Joe Noha era. They look to continue their success into this year as well.

North Dickinson

Location: Felch, Michigan
Projected 14-15 Enrollment: 113 (D7)
Nickname: Nordics
Conference: Mid-Eastern
Head Coach: TBD
2013 Record: 8-3 (5-0)
Postseason: Defeated Pickford 41-22, Defeated North Central 35-13, Lost to Forest Park 24-20 in the Quarterfinals.

Schedule

8/29 vs Florence
9/5 vs Newberry (MI)
9/12 at Munising (MI)
9/19 at Stephenson (MI)
9/26 vs Bark River-Harris (MI)
10/3 vs Forest Park (MI)
10/10 at North Central (MI)
10/17 at Lake Linden-Hubbell (MI)
10/24 OPEN

Comments: The Nordics will be with a new head coach as longtime head coach Joe Reddinger retired after a 37 year run as head coach compiling a 254-120 (.679) record. In an age where enrollments have generally declined across the UP, Reddinger managed to do an phenominal job with getting a team together and getting every ounce of potential out of them.

West Iron County

Location: Iron River, Michigan
Projected 14-15 Enrollment: 259 (D5/D6)
Nickname: Wykons
Conference: Western Peninsula Athletic
Head Coach: Mike Berutti
2013 Record: 10-1 (6-0)
Postseason: Defeated Traverse City St. Francis 21-7, Lost to Ishpeming 34-0 in the Second Round.

Schedule

8/29 vs Munising (MI)
9/5 at L'Anse (MI)
9/12 vs Iron Mountain (MI)
9/19 vs Ironwood (MI)
9/26 vs Houghton (MI)
10/3 at Calumet (MI)
10/10 at Northland Pines
10/17 at Hancock (MI)
10/24 vs Bark River-Harris (MI)

Comments: The Wykons ran the table in the regular season including their first on the field win against Iron Mountain in two decades en route to their second West-PAC title in three years. Unfortunately they could not get a good playoff run going as they ran into eventual state champion Ishpeming in the second round.
