Soccer season is back; was just wondering what people are thinking as to how the season will play out. St Mary Central should have another very talented team. They have speed up front once again and this could be a very high scoring team in the conference. They have had to revamp their defense, and seem to have filled in the holes that were left by some of the graduated seniors. There has been some nice improvements in the conference talent pool and this could turn out to be a exciting year for Packerland soccer.

Even though they lost to Roncalli (were missing most of their team), Sturgeon Bay will be right up near the top of the conference again.

If N.E.W. Lutheran can find a scorer opposite of Mielke and some depth they should be up in the top 3 or 4 yet again as well.

Nice defensive game betweem St Mary Central and GB NEW Lutheran, @ SMC, this past Thursday night. With no subs to replace players GB NEW played a terrific game, and kept the Zephyrs out of the net with nice defensive work by Meilke and their goalie. It appeared their strategy was to keep the Zephyrs off the scoreboard as they dropped back and played 9 in or near the box. GB NEW had two nice runs and SMC got several shots on goal. The first half ended delocked at 0 and remained that way until the 75th minute of the game when Kellner from SMC had a nice cross and SMC's Conn broke through and scored the first goal. Meilke immediately went to offense to try to answer and made some great moves....but at that point SMC's offense was able to get a break away and Conn took it into the goal unassisted, making the score 2-0 and SMC took the win with another goal, by Krieck, and a 3-0 victory.. GB NEW's Meilke and SMC's Conn should once again be 2 of the outstanding players for the Packerland Conference. Again it was a very hard fought game and a nice game to watch.

With the conference season entering the second half of games, it looks like four very quality teams have seperated themselves, with St. Mary Central leading the pack at 8-0. The Zephyrs can all but wrap up the conference chamionship next week with games at N.E.W. Lutheran and at home versus Kewaunee.

Another interesting thing looking forward is how stacked the D3 Regional is: the top four teams in the conference plus two other undefeateds in Assumption (last year's state runner up) and Newman Catholic. A very intriguing match up will take place this Friday at St. Mary Central Invite between St. Mary Central and Assumption with huge seeding implications on the line.

Congratulations go out to Kelly Conn, from St Mary Central High School. Although a Junior, she scored her 100th and 101st career goal Tuesday night against GB NEW Lutheran. To me this is equvilant to 1000 points in basketball. This young lady plays the game with passion and desire and has a great attitude about the game. She has definitely been the offensive power in the conference this year and she is currently ranked 3rd in the state in total points with 79. As a team captain she is a true leader and seems to be well respected, not only by members of her own team, but throughout the Packerland Conference and the State.
Again congratulations on an accomplishment that does not happen often.

I do not envy the coaches trying to seed these teams... regardless, I will try to in the next day or two over on the Seedings Predictions Thread. Really wish the N.E.W. Lutheran/Sturgeon Bay game on Monday didn't conflict with the Algoma/Southern Door softball game... but I am hoping to get to the N.E.W. Lutheran/Kewaunee game next Thursday[].

Yes and no way I can get there as I am involved with baseball also, but I do get to many soccer matchups...... and I will be heading to Wrightstown Monday to catch the game between SMC and Wrightstown before I have to leave for baseball that night.

My seeding predictions and thoughts are posted over on the "2012 Spring Sports Regional Projections and Thoughts" Thread, I may go and revise them next Tuesday or Wednesday if in my mind something needs changing.

The Packerland is looking at a close race to the end, but appears that St Mary Central should finish in first place for the regular season and should have a good chance of getting the number 1 seed heading into the playoffs.

Last night Kewaunee played St Mary Central to a tie and possible could have woke up a sleeping giant, as St Mary Central has the taste of a non-victory and it did not appear after the game that this will sit too well with the coach or the team, only time will tell.

2nd - 4th in conference is still a toss up with:

GB NEW Lutheran (7-3-0/11-5-0), ending the season against Roncalli (3-13 overall), Sturgeon Bay (8-5-0 overall), Kewaunee (13-3-1 overall), Wrightstown (7-11-0 overall)

Sturgeon Bay (8-3-0/8-5-0), ending the season against GB NEW Lutheran (11-5 overall), Sevastpopl/Gilbraltar (1-14 overall) and St Mary Central (16-1-2 overall)

Kewaunee (8-3-1/13-3-1), ending the season against Roncalli (3-13 overall), Two Rivers (0-13 overall), GB NEW Lutheran (11-5 overall)

The top four teams end the seaon playing one of the top 4 teams, so it will be a great finish to a great season.

We cannot forget the playoffs though as Assumption (9-2-4/they are an INDY so have no conference record) and Newman Catholic from the great Northern Conference (8-1-1/10-1-2) will be ready to show their talents and come in strong to lay claim as the state representative from our region.

So we have some great soccer left.

onpackerland.........I enjoy your articles and thoughts.....but was wondering if you would check one out. I placed a post under Wisconsin soccer, entitled : 2012 soccer girls stat leaders. Would love to hear your thought on this....as I may be overlooking something....

Thank you very much for the compliment, it is greatly appreciated. As i wish i was a baller said on the other thread, my guess would be that they just have the definition of a soccer assist wrong (that multiple people can get an assist on a single goal.

Just in general, it has been my thoughts that you have to take high school sports stats with at least some degree of error, no matter the sport. Most of my experiences have been with taking volleyball stats, and it seems errors arise from such things as lack of attention (having JV players take stats when they are more concerned about the person of the opposite sex in the stands...), lack of knowledge on how a stat is defined (as is possible in this case), or just too many things needed to be writen down at once (volleyball stat taking in a nutshell).
