The D2 South team was considered to have the strongest All-Star team down there for any division this year with five players going to D1 schools next year. The Middle Border trio of Jerrod Buchholtz (Durand) and Ky Battern & Dave Schwab (Osceola) combined for over half of the North squad's points.

Buchholtz was the game's leading scorer with 21 points with four three-pointers and he also had a nice dunk as well. He was mostly matched up with Jason Jensen of St. Francis but did see some looks defensively from Trevon Hughes of St. John's NW Military Academy as well. Hughes is the #1 or #2 ranked player in the state for the class of 2006 by many player rankings and is headed to Wisconsin next year.

Battern was matched up with 6'11" JP Gavinski of Wisconsin Dells, another player who is playing at Wisconsin next season. Battern was the second leading scorer on the North team with 14 and the leading rebounder with 6; Gavinski recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

All in all it was a very good showing for the Middle Border boys that participated in the game. They definitely held their own against some of the finest players in the state. Buchholtz & Battern were both starters for the North squad. A subbing system was used where they would make 5 man changes. The South was a legit 10 deep team whereas the North did not really have much behind their starting five to combat the strong South squad. The South also had a huge height advantage with several players over 6'5", whereas the North only had two.

Since each team courts 10 players, why in the world would the North squad start their best five? Then you put players 6-10 on the floor at the same time in the next subbing rotation. That makes no sense to me if you are claiming the top 5 players on the team started. If I recall from my years which seems like 25 years ago they balanced the two 5 man teams out for the game.

It really wouldn't have mattered how the teams were split up with the lineups & rotations. The D2 South had way too many good players & too much size for the North to contend with. Buchholtz & Battern were the two biggest players for the North and the South had like 5 or 6 guys who were just as big or bigger than they were.

Same story when I was there.

I ordered a DVD of the D2 game. Battern played very tough inside against Gavinski despite giving up so much height. I'm going to post some more highlites throughout the day, Ky had some pretty sweet hook shots & JB was draining threes from out in Redick country.
