Over on the U.P. football site I usually like to do this for the Yoopers who come play in Wisconsin, so I thought I?d give it a try on this side. (If it's alright to post in this section...)

Figure also because the football players from many parts of the Wisconsin ?chew the same dirt.?

At the college D2 level there was a really good football game played up in the Superior Dome this past weekend between Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. The teams battled for the Miners Cup. Over 6,500 filled what the U.P. football community calls ?The Sauna? (it?s a wooden dome) and watched MTU kick a 39 yard field goal on the last play of the game as the Huskies defeated the Wildcats 34-31.

Highlighting some of the Wisconsin products who play for MTU, here is some of the game recap from MTU?s website Michigantechhuskies.com:

?A muffed punt gave the Wildcats the ball at the Tech 11 early in the third quarter. It also put the momentum on the NMU sideline. The hosts scored on the next play, then took the lead 23-21 on a safety after Tech's center-to-punter snap went awry near the goal line.

The ensuing free kick saw #43 Kollin Long (Coleman) make a critical open field tackle to keep NMU at their own 30. The Huskies' defense forced a three-and-out, and Tech marched 68 yards to reclaim the lead. Leffingwell had a brilliant 31-yard run to cap the drive, going the final 15 yards after contact.?

Then later in the game as the drama unfolded?

?#10 Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, MI) needed nine plays to get Mead into position for the game winner. #12 Brandon Cowie's (West Bend West) ninth catch of the game converted a third-and-10 to keep the drive alive. Mead hit his second 39-yarder of the game for the winner.?

For Northern Michigan, 3 of the 5 starting offensive linemen are from Wisconsin-

Center- #58 Kyle Steuck (West De Pere)
Right Guard- #69 James Bester (Madison West)
Right Tackle- #78 Brad Kaatz (Pewaukee)

Ashwaubenon alumni #81 Andrew Clark opened the scoring in the game as he caught his first touchdown pass of the season- a 43 yd TD reception on a little trickery. Here are highlights. Clark's TD is around the 9 second mark of the video & you should catch some of the other Wisconsin players throughout the video:

Hueby, is Bester still the same gigantic man he was at Madison West? He was like 340 when he graduated.

Ya know- I think I caught him in the video highlight. He went to celebrate a TD and I thought "Wow look at that guy!" I'll have to look back at it....

edit: Yes sir- he's #69. Kind of supports Wisconsin's reputation of producing big linemen! That northern part of Lower Michigan is a lot like Northern Wisconsin. One of the Wildcats other linemen is from there--Traverse City West and the other lineman on that left side is from Kansas.

For the Wisconsin products playing up at Michigan Tech, their season came to end yesterday losing by 1 point. The video on the link below will show the highlights of U.P. football first.

First you'll see Ishpeming's win then Menominee's loss. Actually on the video below/ the day prior are Munising highlights. For any of you familiar with St. Norbert College's stronger years some years back- the linebacker's coach for SNC was Coach Terry Sayen.

Coach Sayen built Munising into a powerful program back 30 years ago but they struggled for many years after he departed. He was instrumental in recruiting players from the U.P. who were key contributers during many of the Green Knights successful seasons. One of his former players has the Mustangs heading to Ford Field next week.

Also this past weekend the U.P.'s Cedarville Trojans made it to the 8-Man Championship Game and took State Runners-Up. I'm sure a number of these U.P. kids from up there will find themselves playing in Wisconsin and be your teammates at the D3 level.

Anyways after the U.P. football highlights comes Tech's. You'll catch #12 Brandon Cowie (West Bend) scoring some TD's (One highlight is near the end during player interviews), #81 Andrew Clark (Ashwaubenon) who led Tech in receiving this game, on a Huskies TD play to Cowie you'll catch #78 Frank Vruwink (WI Rapids Lincoln) blocking and on a Ram's highlight watch for MTU defensive lineman #94 Tanner Agen (Kaukauna):
