The once mighty WVC had only 1 postseason team a year ago. Will the tide turn back this season or anytime soon? How many WVC teams will make the playoffs this season and will the league schools compete for league titles in the FVA-North and South?

Off the WVC teams, I sadly only see SPASH making the postseason with D.C. Everest being an outside shot. Wausau West lost a lot of production and Rapids and Marshfield are rebuilding,

Marshfield #'s are way down ... approx 75 sophs, juniors & seniors out for the sport. Gone are the days of 160 kids out for football under WFCA HOF head coach Len Luedtke.

The longtime middle school coaches are also gone and there has been some disruption on the varsity coaching staff too. Presently this program is in a rapid free-fall. Only time will tell if current head coach Denny Goettl is the person capable of halting the program's descent and get it heading in the direction it enjoyed for most of the past 20 seasons. [:%]

Looking at the Tigers' schedule here at the beginning of the season, realistically, I see them being competitive vs only 3 opponents: Wausau East, Wisconsin Rapids & Oshkosh West. Unfortunately, I believe the remaining teams on the Tiger schedule will prove to be too much for Marshfield.

In the meantime, I hope my alma mater proves me to be nothing more than an ignorant bag of wind ! []

Not sure of the numbers at DC Everest, but a similar dropoff in terms of success has occurred. Going to Kimberly last year for a game, it felt like what it used to be at Everest with the huge crowd and the huge team with the huge homefield edge. I don't think it's impossible for either Marshfield or Everest to get back into league-title contention in the future, but it's not easy against those FVA schools that are really putting together some fine programs and the other WVC schools in the VFA are capable of putting together great teams as we've seen with the state teams at SPASH and WR. Plus, the fact that it happened at all in terms of the decades of excellence at DCE and Marshfield is something in itself....something that happens for very few HS programs and something that isn't guaranteed to continue forever.

Early reactions: Rapids and Marshfield have found ways to win early, which is a great thing for teams trying to reestablish themselves. Though, as sad as it is to say, beating WVC breatheren is just the start with the even tougher FVA teams they have to meet starting now in the South.

SPASH has looked more like the SPASH of McAdams era 1. Will be interesting to see if they can keep moving the ball against Fondy.....will know alot more tomorrow night.

Tough start for the Wausau area. East, West and DCE all 0-2. Someone will have to win w/ West hosting DCE tomorrow night. Both teams still have a good shot to make the playoffs IMHO. However, tougher after letting winnable games slip away last week. Winner tomorrow will be in decent shape, loser will have an uphill climb. Playoff hopes will depend on whether Appleton East and West are truly alot better after their wins last week and how good Kaukauna is.

This is not an enrollment issue this is a program issue. When u are constantly changing coaches you get no consistency. Steve jung started to develop a solid squad then left for neenah. Since then the numbers are down and when numbers are down programs will fail.

Hortonville has only 3 more students than Wausau East and they wanted into the VFA. This isn't an enrollment issue.

With one week to go at least three WVC teams will make the playoffs with SPASH, DC Everest and Merrill all in and Wausau West a fourth with a win at Appleton West on Friday. Only Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids and Wausau East eliminated.
