I am numb. Wisconsin sports is the greatest (worst) Novocaine.
The only time I felt secure was while Woodruff was pitching with a 3-1 lead. Enter Suter, and I still had very little anxiety, provided I stayed in the moment.  If I allowed myself to look ahead, knowing at least 2 more relievers would make appearances, the anxiety levels would ramp up.  I breathed a bit easier following Pomeranz's stint, but had similar reservations to those expressed by DB, when I began to process the prospect of Hader pitching the 8th & 9th innings.

It appears our trepidations were not unwarranted.

The warm, optimistic glow, which the month of September created, was harshly extinguished by the 4 consecutive bullpen fails in Denver &  D.C.

Well... they made the playoffs and had a really good season, hurts to lose like that.

The game played out almost perfectly for them; early lead, Woody cruising, Suter effective then how to cover the final 4 IP. I would have had Pomeranz go 3 then to Hader for 1. Given Braun and Cain's hobbled status I would have thought about double switching to bring Pomeranz/Gamel into the game in the 6th for Cain instead of having Pom bat 2nd in the 7th. Would Grisham have gotten to the Zimmerman broken bat bloop????

For those fretting the "2 inning save", Hader struggled in his first inning not his second. Tough breaks like the HBP/foul ball thing but no guarantee that Taylor doesn't get on if that is called a foul ball. The broken bat bloop that falls in the perfect place, is just one of those things.

The BP cannot continue to put guys on base in close games late. Too many BB or the HBP late in games and it had been happening all season.
The inability to tack on runs again happened all season. I thought CC failed to play to put pressure on the D in the 5th. Why not PR Taylor once Shaw lead off with a BB? SAC him to 2B with 1 out and Grandal and Moose due up.

Had plenty of chances all summer to win enough games to win the division instead of needing a crazy good Sept to get in and then play a 1 and done WC game.

Seriously. I am starting to think the Packers' Super Bowl win in 2010 unknowingly set off an avalanche of crushing defeats for Wisconsin sports teams. These are just off the top of my head:

Packers:
NFCCG debacle in Seattle
Divisional loss to Arizona in OT

Brewers:
NLCS Game 7 loss
Last night

Bucks:
Blew 2-0 lead in ECF

Badger football (where to start):
Three straight Rose Bowl losses
Hail mary losses to OSU and MSU in back-to-back weeks in 2011
Collapse against PSU in the B1GCCG

Badger basketball:
FF loss to Kentucky
NC loss to Duke
NCAA tourney loss to Florida on OT buzzer-beater

Yikes Wisco - your list brings back some pretty painful memories and sleepless nights!!

I am still trying to digest last night and we will have plenty of time to discuss and debate.  Needless to say, I am not a fan of the bullpen philosophy employed by CC and the use of Hader.

The funny thing was it wasn't a home run that hurt Hader, rather a walk, a broken-bat single (that a healthy Cain maybe catches?) and a bad misplay by the RF. He threw six sliders. The Nats laid off all five that were off the plate. That's not a recipe for current or future success for Hader. He's gotta be more consistent with that thing. The book on his heater is out and climbing the bestseller list. And to think some people wanted him to be a starter.

The odds of Hader going two clean were simply not as good as CC thought. He didn't even go one. Not being able to bridge Suter for two and then using Pomeranz for two really upset the apple cart.

Suter struggled through his inning, but, he got out of the jam he was in and didn't give up a run.  He was the best reliever in the NL for the month of September.  He threw 27 pitches and has gone multiple innings in most of his appearances.  I would have liked to have seen him come back out for his 2nd inning and have Pomeranz ready to go.  If he gives up a hit, then go get him and bring Pomeranz in.  But, if he gets through it, then Pomeranz comes in for the 7th and 8th.  As overpowering as he was and has been, I would have taken my chances with him against the top of the Nats order.

Playing backseat manager is easy, I get it.  We all will do it.  My take is that if the Brewers continue to play games with the philosophy that starters can only go through the opponents batting order 2 times and ask 2 or 3 others to bridge to the closer who you are asking to throw multiple innings is not a long term winning plan.  There are just to many variables that can go wrong.  The only way this is a winning philosophy is that if you have trust in all of the bullpen and can use all of them in any situation.  You can not have your go to guys for close games and then the mop up guys in lopsided games.
