I meant to post this when I saw some news on it in the last week or so but it appears that WIAA Summer Baseball is losing several teams.

Oak Creek is leaving for the spring season, so is Greendale and it's been reported that Nicolet, Homestead and Port Wash are all leaving too.

West Allis Central will be leaving in 2019.

It's only a matter of time now before summer baseball dies.

Schools are realizing that the only way they can get their best players to play for the school team is by playing in spring.

Every year it seems there's a team with a senior with a D1 scholarship playing for his HS for the first time. Doersching at Greendale last year was the most recent example. Of course, you can't forget Arrowhead's first year in spring ball saw four D1 level players join the school team for the first time.

How many teams are left in summer baseball?  Fewer than 8 man FB teams?

I find the reasons behind this to be an interesting topic. That the lure of HS sports only goes so far. There is just so much more available for kids year round anymore that things have changed HS sports is not the be all end all it once may have been.

I believe the summer tournament is contracted with Kapco Park in Mequon through 2020 so I can definitely see one combined season starting in 2021. One of the reasons cited by either Greendale or Oak Creek (I forget which) in an article about the move to spring ball is that the practice schedule for spring ball is so much more favorable than during summer.

They'll have to find a way to get out of that and I would think it would be easy enough to do so.  There won't be anyone (not more than 12-15 teams) left in summer baseball in 2 years.

There could be a lot of small reasons here and there for the decline in WIAA summer baseball but let's not kid ourselves; #1 by a landslide is that the best baseball players in a school do not play for their HS summer team when they can play for their travel team.

The Greater Metro will be offering spring ball starting in 2019 and most conference members are expected to make the move.

Kapco might be devoid of HS ball in July of 2020.

More news. It would seem that 2018 is likely to be the last for WIAA Summer Baseball.
