Anyone know why Westosha forfeited their Regional Volleyball match?

Had played too many contests.... Apparently played in eight tournaments instead of seven that teams are allowed.
"Let's Play Two!!!"

Baseball is not a game that builds character, it is a game that reveals it.

Seems like one of the easier things to avoid. Not sure what there is to appeal?

AD and coach apparently had scheduled 8 tournaments for 3 or 4 years but this is first time it was ever reported. It's a pretty straight forward regulation.

Oh, the "we've always done it that way" explanation.

That is ridiculous! If I were a player on that team I would be upset! Unfortunately this is where kids get the raw deal when it is the adults fault.

TBH I thought Westosha was going to make it to state too.

I was discussing this recently with a couple of school administrators, who were pretty incredulous that a coach and A.D. (of a school with a long history of success in this sport) would put their team in that position (i.e., being disqualified for obviously administrative mistakes).

Gotta' love the A.D. quoted here in reaction to students arguing their appeal to the WIAA: "I'm glad that they're advocating for themselves," said Westosha Central Athletic Director Jon Lindh.

This may be harsh, but I'm not sure that guy should have that job much longer.

All admins forfeit(or pay back) any pay tied to athletics in all years this "mistake" was done, and then I'd let the team back in the playoffs.

I do not think that is too harsh. That is a huge mistake that affects more than him. I get people make mistakes but this is something that is easily avoidable. Like Travis mentioned...this is not even a grey area rule! It is black and white!

btw I think holding the team out is the right call of the WIAA. Otherwise we get the proverbial "it is my fault do not punish them".

You often here the retort about "not punishing" the kids. The problem with that line of thinking is that punishment needs to be harsh -- and I think everyone would agree it's a harsh punishment to forfeit -- to serve as a deterrent, and as a way to make sure coaches and administrators take the steps to make sure teams are following the correct procedures and rules.

That there is little of this happening -- instances seem few and far between, unless I'm mistaken -- suggests the WIAA's policy is working well.
