This was somewhat expected as Detweiller himself had said going into this season that the bottom line was winning games and they needed to do that this season. However, some of the staff were on the road recruiting last week - so apparently they were not in on the discussions that lead up to this.

Change had to be made. 3 wins a year just doesn't cut it at UW-L and by all reports, there were some grumblings from inside the program that wanted him to go. He seemed to connect with some players - but not all - and had alienated some of the high school coaches in the area.

It has become very difficult to win at UW-L. With the admission standards second only to Madison, getting kids in is not like it used to be and each year, they lose kids to other WIAC schools or they go into Minnesota with the D2 programs. There is little support of athletics from the Chancellor and the hire of the new AD was a head scratcher.

All in all though, Detweiller was given some full time coaches that he asked for when he got the job and he didn't win. The program never established an identity under his leadership and it had some real disheartening loses - both blowouts and bad game management.
